grisendi1-1 profile of a predangler

During these first 36 years of my earthly existence, I’ve managed to have only one certainty: if you’re looking for something on Google but can’t find it, then it means that this thing doesn’t exist. So I tried to find the word “predangler” without obtaining any result. Predangler… what does it mean? Well, when I read the first review of AVP – Requiem in 2007, I was reminded the neologism used for the new species: predalien, a hybrid with superior features. I felt the same wonder when I saw the pictures on Yuri Grisendi’s Facebook profile. In that moment I understand that Yuri wasn’t just a simple angler and said to myself: “Boy! This man is a predangler!” Strange word, I agree, but what’s the best one for a such predator of huge carnivorous? If you try now to search the word predangler on the Google bar, you’ll probably find the link to this article. I guess I’ve invented a new term and if so, then Mr Grisendi is the first predangler of human history.

I met him during the Carpitaly 2010 at the Daiwa stand, but there wasn’t any presentation, any handshake; I just took some photos. Last week I contacted him via an email which was followed by a telephone call. My interest is to make some reports on river Po, the longest Italic one. Of course, the target is the giant catfish called Silurus glanis.

Mi limitai solo a scattare qualche foto.

Silurus, siluro, wels catfish, sheatfish, european giant catfish, all words having only one meaning: a huge carnivorous. The predangler in the water together with his prey is the most classic way to picture the final act of a combat. Be careful: you can take a such photo just during summertime…

This picture was taken on a summer swelling, you can see it by the tree behind them. In the few past weeks it rained a lot, too much in the North-west of the peninsula. There were terrible floods in Tuscany and in the city of Genova, natural disasters that have caused many casualties: people were drowned in the streets and inside their homes, many of whom were women and children. If Italiot politicians and weathermen worked in the USA, Americans would be a people in danger of extintion. Today river Po is still swollen and it’s not possible to fish in it for a long time. If you’re wondering when it will be possible to get that report about catching great siluro, the only answer I can give you is: I don’t know it, you must have patience.

In late nineties I worked as an assistant cook into a hotel near Venice, and one morning early as I had just arrived in the kitchen I read on the menu: “Nile perch fillet”. They were frozen, of course, stocked into big, white boxes. I remember how they were perfectly filleted and cleaned, pale pink coloured. However, their origin wasn’t the river Nile, they came from somewhere else. I can’t write about this story here, this isn’t an article about Lates niloticus, but I’d suggest you two things: “Darwin’s nightmare” and “Darwin’s dreampond: drama on Lake Victoria”. The first one is a great documentary directed by Hubert Sauper who was premiered at 2004 Venice Film Festival, the second one is a book written by Dutch biologist Tijs Goldschmidt. You can find them on sale at Amazon’s site, and believe me they are worth every cent of their prices. Looking at this picture from Grisendi’s FB profile, taken on the shores of the Lake Nasser, I reminded all these things.

Giant wels catfish of river Po, northern Italic peninsula. Lots of people practise the sport of fishing of this great animal and after taking some photos of the beast, it’s always released. Is it all right? No. This fish is considered to be infesting and harmful for the environment, so local laws prohibit its release once captured. Of course anglers don’t kill their fish ever, breaking the law every time. There are other problems too…

Still doubtful about the concept of predangler? Note that sheathfish has not scales as well as other catfish species and every single animal is unique due to their particular coat: there isn’t a siluro looking alike another, the same way zebras go. Legalized poaching is another problem for this animal and the anglers who are fond of it. This fact is very interesting, complicated and very sad, but I’ll write about it next time.

I leave you with this giant white, an albino and not the ghost of a fish killed by Hungarian poachers. It’s 242 centimetres long, was captured in a French river and has got a name: Rackam.
