Ma nulla, le insistenze continuarono facendomi perdere gli scatti migliori. Innervosito da tanta ignoranza, ho preferito andarmene per evitare di gettare un corpo estraneo nelle acque del Brian.

È stato l’unico vero professionista dell’immagine visto durante l’intera giornata di gara: che tristezza! Bucintoro, questo potete leggere sulla sua maglietta, oggi solo il nome di un circolo di canotaggio. Ma Bucintoro è stato molto di più, un nome ancora rimpianto da molti veri veneziani: antico simbolo della Serenissima venne incendiato per ordine di un individuo definito nella sceneggiatura di un film come “quel maiale francese”.

I regret this also because day two was richer in catches than day one. Congratulations to the world champions of the Serb team Senta Maros: Zsolt Palfi, Milan Selkulic, Zsolt Beviz, Arnold Santo and Zoran Dugajlic.

Per motivi di lavoro non ho potuto essere presente alla seconda giornata di gara, quindi non troverete il relativo articolo e le foto della premiazione sotto la pioggia. Me ne rammarico anche perché gara due è stata più ricca di catture. Sergii Burdak e Rui Coimbra seguono con lo sguardo le restanti operazioni di pesatura nella zona D, ma stanno anche discutendo di un’altra cosa: ciò che tengono in mano sono le aste dei rispettivi ombrelloni. Quello di Rui, in lega leggera, non ha resistito alle sollecitazioni del vento, mentre l’asta di Sergii non ha avuto problemi. Il motivo? Sia chimico che fisico. Quello del portoghese era semplice metallo e molto sottile, l’altro era di titanio e di sezione molto spessa con solo un piccolo foro centrale. Sergii ha provato a piegarlo con decisione facendo leva sul ginocchio, ma è rimasto perfettamente dritto. Non so che vento spiri in Ucraina, ma dubito che una simile soluzione possa essere economicamente competitiva.

The current speed is the first and most important parameter to consider when planning a strategy. In the canal Brian, that runs next to the sea, the current is variable and reflects the tides movement when the doors of this barrier are left open.

La velocità della corrente è il primo e più importante parametro da considerare nel momento in cui si pianifica una strategia. In the two competition days the tide was sharply rising with its peak around noon (in the Mediterranean Sea there’s a maximum difference of one meter), and it means that the water had to move from downstream to upstream. So it wasn’t: evidently the bulkheads were closed, and not left open like you see in this picture.

Nei due giorni di gara la marea era nettamente crescente con il suo picco verso mezzogiorno (nel Mediterraneo vi è un dislivello massimo di un metro); ciò significa che l’acqua doveva muoversi da valle verso monte. Così non è stato: evidentemente le paratie erano chiuse, e non aperte come si può vedere in questa foto.

The car park for anglers and spectators was an uncultivatedagricultural field near to the canal. Luckily for the organizers, the unstable weather of those days has spared the tounament, putting to rain just during the prize ceremony as you can see from these open umbrellas; but if it had started to rain a few hours before… End of the biological rest period, at least that seems the message of these signs piled up in the parking area.

Il parcheggio per gli agonisti e gli spettatori era stato ricavato da un campo agricolo incolto a ridosso del canale. Per fortuna degli organizzatori il tempo instabile di quei giorni ha risparmiato la gara, sfogandosi solo durante la premiazione come potete vedere da questi ombrelli aperti; ma se avesse iniziato a piovere qualche ora prima… Fine del periodo di riposo biologico, almeno sembra questo il messaggio di questi cartelli accatastati nel parcheggio.

The photo in evidence of an item is special: a single shot with the strength to summarize a whole story, and personally I’m convinced that it should always be an original, unique image that no one else didn’t have the ability to grasp. Consider it as a habit by photographers. I wouldn’t use it if I hadn’t accidentally discovered the source: the mascot of the 2013 world championship for clubs is a drawing selected from a competition open to school children of San Dona di Piave, the town in which it took place the opening ceremony of the event. Really effective, congratulations to the girl who designed it.

La foto in evidenza di un articolo è speciale: un singolo scatto che deve avere la forza di riassumere un’intera storia, e personalmente sono convinto che debba sempre essere un soggetto originale, unico, che nessun altro ha avuto l’abilità di cogliere. Consideratelo pure un vezzo da fotografi. Usare un’immagine non mia è una forzatura che avrei evitato, se non ne avessi scoperto casualmente l’origine: la mascotte del campionato del mondo per clubs 2013 è un disegno selezionato da un concorso aperto ai ragazzini delle scuole di San Donà di Piave, il paese in cui si è svolta la cerimonia di apertura dell’evento. Davvero efficace: complimenti alla ragazzina che lo ha realizzato.

Steve Hemingray, the only representative of the team Kamasan Starlets I photographed. There were also a couple who called Dannen Cox and Sean Ashby, but tiredness nailed my legs and I decided to follow mainly a particular area, the upstream one nicknamed “at the poplar”.

During the first competition day he was in zone E, sector A, located at the top of the competition field. I decided to observe the Italian during the last preparation stages and during the minutes dedicated to the initial heavy baiting operations. Note the dry clay layer: only a few weeks before here there was a grassy bank and a lush reed: the real, typical bank of the canal Brian.

This one instead, decidedly darker, will be put down under the roubaisienne tip.

The floats present on the Defendi’s tips: short form, steel stem, partially or totally black colored tip due to the sun reflections. The pattern on the long pole elements surface suggests that they are a Reglass production.

I galleggianti presenti sulle punte preparate da Defendi: forma raccolta, deriva in acciaio, antenne in parte o totalmente colorate di nero a causa del riflesso sull’acqua. Il disegno sulla superficie delle punte lascia intuire come esse siano di produzione Reglass.

Instead these are the lines prepared by the competitor alongside Mr Defendi: the tips are painted in black with the exception of a little section next to the body. They are all about two grams.

Now the match rods: 16 ‘ (4.8 meters), tip action and a casting weight up to 30 grams to cover the forty meters distance that separate the other side. Little in common with traditional tackle born for this fishing style.

Passiamo alle canne per la pesca all’inglese: 16′ (4.8 metri), azione di punta e una potenza di lancio fino a 30 grammi per coprire i quaranta metri che separano dalla sponda opposta. Poco a che spartire con i tradizionali attrezzi nati per questo stile di pesca.

The particular waggler fixing system. A hybrid solution between the classic fixing system and the slider: it guarantees a smoother action in the little hinvitations, but above all it restricts the line shift. If the float was completely blocked, this would sink mostly in each minimum wire winding.

Una soluzione ibrida tra il classico sistema fisso e quello scorrevole: garantisce un’azione più fluida nei piccoli richiami necessari a invogliare il pesce all’abboccata, ma sopratutto limita lo spostamento della lenza. Se invece il galleggiante fosse completamente bloccato, questo affonderebbe maggiormente a ogni minimo avvolgimento di filo.

The solution adopted by Defendi for the slider: a single large lead ball to calibrate the waggler, but without the braid to stiffen the structure.

The groundbait was concentrated in the bottom about five meters from the opposite bank to point to carps and crucians. With a high water level, alternatively you can catch big rudds present close to or inside the reed using a line of one meter. You have to sling sticky maggots in a meter away, but be careful: wrong target with a baits that end up in the middle of the reeds means not taking anything.

La pastura andava concentrata sul fondo a cinque metri dalla sponda per puntare a carpe e carassi. Quando il livello dell’acqua è alto, in alternativa si può tentare la cattura delle grosse scardole presenti a ridosso o dentro il canneto usando una lenza da un metro. Bisogna fiondare bigattini incollati a un metro di distanza, ma attenzione: sbagliare mira con una pallina di esche che finisce in mezzo al canneto significa non prendere più nulla.

This is an interesting picture: the photographer you see is a pro, in the sense that earns his bread and pays the bills thanks to the images he creates with his equipment. And the photographic equipment worth a reflection: he’s using a Nikon D90 (amateur SLR of three generations ago) with the Nikkor 70-300 VR (amateur level lens, although the best in its price range together with the Sony 70-300). In other western countries, we would have seen him at work with a D4 or an EOS 1D serie, but not in Italy. Why? For two reasons: this is a country devoid of photographic culture and this intellectual poverty damage the profession, which doesn’t have any protection (as happens in Germany). Secondly, the taxation level is so exasperated that, paid all you have to pay, remain just the money for bread (when it goes well).

Questa è un’immagine interessante: il fotografo che vedete è un professionista, nel senso che si guadagna il pane e paga le bollette proprio grazie alle immagini che riesce a creare con la sua attrezzatura. E proprio la sua attrezzatura fotografica merita una breve riflessione: sta usando una Nikon D80 (reflex amatoriale di quattro generazioni fa) corredata dal Nikkor 70-300 VR (lente di livello amatoriale, pur se il migliore nella sua fascia di prezzo assieme al Sony 70-300). In altri paesi occidentali un professionista come questo lo avremmo visto all’opera con una D4 o una EOS serie 1D, ma non in Italia. Perché? Per due motivi: questo è un paese privo di cultura fotografica e la cosa si riflette sulla professione, che tra l’altro non gode di alcuna protezione come invece avviene in Germania. In secondo luogo il livello di tassazione è così esasperato che, pagate tutti i balzelli, restano appena i soldi per il pane. Quando va bene.

A mirror carp just captured by Eugen Baltac, second in section A zone C with 4,117 grams. He will be beaten by Swedish Mattias Litzell with nearly five kilos. Fish of this size are not random: in the days before the tournament had been released a few tons of carps weighing between 200 grams and some kilos.

Una carpa a specchi appena catturata da Eugen Baltac, secondo nel settore A della zona C con 4117 grammi. Sarà battuto dallo svedese Mattias Litzell con quasi cinque chili. Pesci di questa taglia non sono casuali: nei giorni precedenti alla gara erano state immesse alcune tonnellate di carpe del peso compreso tra 200 grammi e qualche chilo.

Torre di Mosto is a small town in the Veneto countryside between the river Livenza and the canal Brian, located 50 km north of Venice. Green is the color that still dominates the surrounding landscape, although it’s gradually thinning out because of a ruling class of lowest level. On the road sign it reads “town of eels” (bisat it is the Venetian dialect for eel), and in fact it takes place here a celebration dedicated to this fish, that they say to be the best when caught in the Livenza’s waters. With a similar premise, Torre di Mosto is the ideal place for a world championship.

Torre di Mosto è un piccolo paese immerso nella campagna veneta tra il fiume Livenza e il canale Brian, situato 50 km a nord di Venezia. Verde è il colore che ancora domina il paesaggio circostante, anche se sta progressivamente diradando a causa di una classe dirigente di livello infimo. Sul cartello stradale si legge “paese dell’anguilla” (“bisat” ne è il nome dialettale veneto), e infatti qui annualmente a maggio si svolge una festa dedicata proprio a questo pesce che, dicono, essere il migliore quando catturato nelle acque del Livenza. Con una premessa del genere, Torre di Mosto è il luogo ideale in cui disputare un campionato del mondo di pesca sportiva.

Under the road sign with the name of the town there’s another one with a different color, only apparently uninteresting. No comments are necessary for the words added by the hand of a poor idiot, instead I want to dedicate a few lines to a story that almost nobody knows and that regards the carabinieri, founded by the Savoy dinasty a couple of centuries ago and that can be considered something similar to the French National Gendarmerie. Jokes aside, if you ask to an Italian to tell something concerning the carabinieri, almost always you’ll get two answers: Salvo D’Acquisto and the arrest of Pinocchio, tragic normality mirroring the big problem that Italic people have with their recent common history and more generally with the substandard quality of their school system. I then try to give you some more information. There are two versions about the events that led to the political unity of the peninsula: the official one celebrated and paraded a couple of years ago on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the kingdom of Italy’s birth (about prodigious exploit plenty beyond the limit of human possibility…) , and another corresponding to the reality of historical events that has always been opposed by the official storiography, a version that talks about thefts of legitimate kingdoms, of deception, of corruption, of Masonic lodges, of the British Empire, and especially of violence. Lot of violence. In all this what was the role of the carabinieri? Simple: they were used together with other military forces, first of all the bersaglieri, on several occasions to subdue the southern people; in particular in the 1860-70 decade, years in which blood literally flowed in rivers. A small part of that truth you will read in articles I will publish later, but now I conclude by telling another job in which the carabinieri were employed: that of the executioner, as also reported in their official website. During World War I they were to carry out the death sentences under the military Savoy code: more than seven hundred ended up as you can see in the scenes of this film by Francesco Rosi, which resulted some trouble to the director. Many condemned people were poor southern illiterate peasants send to the slaughter to execute absurd orders givern by rogues with starlets. How many things can tell an ordinary road sign.

Sotto il cartello con il nome del paese ve ne è un altro di tono e colore diverso, solo in apparenza poco interessante. Barzellette a parte, se chiedete a un italiano di raccontare qualcosa che riguardi i carabinieri quasi sempre riceverete due risposte: Salvo D’Acquisto e l’arresto di Pinocchio, tragica normalità rispecchiante il grosso problema che le genti italiche hanno con la loro recente storia comune, e più in generale con la scadente qualità del loro sistema scolastico. Provo allora darvi qualche informazione in più, di quelle che non si trovano su Wikipedia. Esistono due versioni relative alle vicende che portarono all’unità politica della penisola: quella ufficiale festeggiata un paio di anni fa in occasione del 150° anniversario della fondazione del regno d’Italia (narrante di imprese prodigiose abbondantemente oltre il limite delle umane possibilità…), e un’altra corrispondente alla realtà degli eventi storici da sempre osteggiata dalla storiografia ufficiale, una versione che parla di furti di regni legittimi, di inganni, di corruzione, di logge massoniche, di Impero Britannico, e soprattutto di violenza. Molta violenza. In tutto questo cosa centrano i carabinieri? Semplice: furono impiegati assieme ad altri corpi militari, primi fra tutti i bersaglieri, per sottomettere a più riprese il popolo meridionale; in particolare nel decennio 1860-70, anni in cui il sangue scorse letteralmente a fiumi. Una piccola parte di quella verità ottocentesca la leggerete negli articoli che pubblicherò più avanti, ora concludo raccontandovi un’altra mansione in cui venivano impiegati i carabinieri: quella del boia, come potete leggere anche nelle pagine del loro sito ufficiale. Durante la prima guerra mondiale furono loro a eseguire le sentenze capitali previste dal codice militare sabaudo: a centinaia finirono come potete vedere nelle scene di questo film storico di Francesco Rosi che procurò al regista molti problemi. Molte volte i condannati erano poveri contadini analfabeti del sud mandati al macello per eseguire ordini assurdi impartiti da canaglie con le stelline. È sorprendente quante cose sia in grado di raccontare un banalissimo cartello stradale.

A few days before of the championship I was in a small fishing shop in Jesolo, another little country town north of Venice. Until a few years ago Jesolo was only… Jesolo, then certain characters began to be elected as mayor and like magic the country town became “City of Jesolo, The City Beach” (they began to aping Miami!!). Just as happened to my tiny rural town, Eraclea, which in the same way magically became “City of Eraclea “… Better get back to serious things.

Qualche giorno prima dell’inizio del mondiale sono stato in un piccolo negozio di pesca di Jesolo, altro paesotto di campagna a nord di Venezia. Fino ad alcuni anni fa Jesolo era solo… Jesolo, poi iniziarono ad esservi eletti alla carica di sindaco certi personaggi e come per magia il paesotto di campagna si è trasformato in “Città di Jesolo, The City Beach” (si sono messi a scimmiottare Miami!!). Proprio come è successo al mio minuscolo paesino di campagna, Eraclea, che altrettanto magicamente si è trasformato in “Città di Eraclea”… Meglio tornare alle cose serie.

This is absolutly the most widely used one when fishing for mullets in the amatorial way: Gamakatsu LS- 3120N.

Questa è in assoluto la più utilizzata nella pesca amatoriale dei cefali: l’LS-3120N di Gamakatsu.

What it makes particular this serie is the presence of two barbs on the shank which serve to retain the bait. It’s a model designed for sea fishing but can be also used is in inland waters. A curiosity: the word size is written twice and twice gives different numbers. Really strange this apparent confusion for a Japanese brand.

Ciò che la rende particole è la presenza di due ardiglioni sul gambo dell’amo aventi lo scopo di trattenere l’esca. È un modello progettato per la pesca in mare ma che trova impiego anche nelle acque interne. Una curiosità: la parola “size” è scritta due volte e per due volte riporta numeri differenti. Strano davvero questa apparente confusione da parte di un marchio giapponese.

Samuele shows two interesting things that supposedly can make the difference in a canal connected to the sea like the Brian: a booklet and a bait box.

Samuele mostra due cose interessanti che teoricamente dovrebbero fare la differenza nella pesca in un canale come il Brian collegato al mare: una scatola di esche e un libretto.

The white bait box hold in the Samuele’s right hand contents a marine annelid called arenicola, or tremolina, and is absolutely the most used bait for mullet fishing in Venice area. The arenicola can be successful during the mid-low level competitions because fouillies and vers de vase are prohibited. Intead, in the world championship they will be allowed, baits that mullets like a lot: in competitions like this one the use of arenicola loses its meaning.

La scatola bianca nella mano destra di Samuele contiene un anellide marino chiamato arenicola, o tremolina, ed è in assoluto l’esca più utilizzata nella pesca dei cefali in questa zona della penisola. L’arenicola può risultare vincente durante le gare di medio basso livello, ma questo perché è proibito l’uso di fouillies e vers de vase. Durante il mondiale saranno invece consentiti, esche che i cefali gradiscono molto: in gare come queste l’uso della tremolina perde di significato.

The arenicola lives hidden in the mud and has teeth with which will try to bite the anglers’ fingers. They are tiny structures that can provide at most a little tickle. I remember an episode of Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe engaged to find annelids similar to the Italian arenicola, and the first appreciable difference between the two species was the dimension: the Yankee one is bigger and equipped with teeth capable of biting painfully. Watch that episode: Vasco often works in the same way.

Vive nascosta nel fango e ha dei dentelli con cui cercherà di mordervi le dita. Sono minuscole strutture che al massimo possono procurare un po’ di solletico. Ricordo una puntata di Dirty Jobs in cui Mike Rowe si cimentava nella raccolta di anellidi simili all’arenicola, e la prima differenza apprezzabile tra le due specie stava nelle dimensioni: quella yankee è molto più grande e sopratutto è dotata di denti in grado di mordere dolorosamente. Se avete qualche minuto da perdere, guardatevi quella puntata: Vasco lavora molte ore in quel modo negli arenili della laguna di Venezia.

The large larva of Galleria mellonella, a small butterfly parasite of the beehives. It is an excellent bait for the big rudds hide in the the opposite bank reeds of the Brian.

Camola del miele, ovvero la grossa larva di mellonella, una piccola farfalla parassitante i favi di api. È un’eccellente esca per tentare le grosse scardole stazionanti nel canneto sulla riva opposta del canale Brian.

Tebo, or the larva of a South American moth. It’s still larger than the mellonella one and those at the bottom in the picture are orsetti (litterally “little bears”), similar to maggots but bigger. Despite of arenicole wich are exclusively wanted for sport fishing, all these larvae are produced for birds and reptiles breedings and have been used as bait for the result that can offer under certain conditions. Also the tebo is appreciated by the big rudd.

Tebo, ovvero la larva di una falena sudamericana. È ancora più grande della Mellonella e quelle che intravvedete in basso nella foto sono orsetti, simili ai bigattini ma più grossi. Queste larve vengono prodotte per l’alimentazione di uccelli e rettili, e sono state adottate come esche per il rendimento che sanno offrire in determinate condizioni. Anche il tebo è apprezzato dalle grosse scardole del Brian.

The tide predictions booklet of the Venice area offers an idea about trends and strength of the current. However, the values that you can read are refer to a specific point near the lagoon city and are subject to changes at different coast points, up to several minutes in the case of inland waters many kilometers away from the sea.

Il libretto delle previsioni di marea della zona di Venezia permette di farsi un’idea sull’andamento e sulla forza della corrente che può interessare un corso d’acqua. Tuttavia i valori che vi leggete sono riferiti a un punto preciso nei pressi della città lagunare e sono suscettibili di variazioni in punti diversi della costa, anche di parecchi minuti nel caso di acque interne distanti chilometri dal mare.

Our days were Saturday 8 and Sunday 9, June; it was a period characterized by moonless nights. The design tells about a tide rising until noon, then we should expect a current that moves from downstream to upstream. Nevertheless things may appear different: there’s gates near the mouth of the canal, movable bulkheads that when closed impede the current movement. The Brian water could be perfectly still even in case of extreme tidal changes.

I giorni che ci interessano sono sabato 8 e domenica 9 giugno, un periodo caratterizzato da notti senza luna. Il disegno racconta di maree crescenti fino a mezzogiorno, quindi ci si dovrebbe attendere una corrente che si muove da valle verso monte. In realtà le cose possono presentarsi diverse: esiste un’opera di sbarramento nei pressi della foce del canale, paratie che quando sono chiuse impediscono il movimento dell’acqua. L’acqua del canale Brian potrebbe mostrarsi perfettamente ferma anche in caso di variazioni estreme di marea.

Ricordo perfettamente le ultime parole con cui ho concluso il mio precedente articolo, ma la vita è fatta di scelte e le scelte impongono rinunce. The cold and rainy climate that until now has characterized the northern Italic peninsula is a factor that is affecting the fish behavior, making them apathetic in biting. The standing water on agricultural fields and nighttime temperatures below 10 Celsius degrees could be a memory in two weeks during the world championship weekend, or not…

Dato che il tempo è un fattore limitante, direi di concentrarci subito sul campo di gara che l’8 e 9 giugno ospiterà il prossimo mondiale per club di pesca al colpo che si disputerà circa 50 chilometri a nord di Venezia. La foto che vedete l’ho scattata lasciandomi il canale Brian alle spalle e puntando la reflex in direzione della Gran Bretagna: quelle che vedete sono le Alpi Veneto-Friulane ricoperte da neve nella loro estremità superiore. Il clima molto piovoso e freddo che fino a oggi ha caratterizzato il nord della penisola italica è un fattore che sta influendo sul comportamento dei pesci, rendendoli apatici e poco avvezzi all’abboccata. L’acqua ristagnante sui campi agricoli e le temperature notturne inferiori ai 10 gradi Celsius potrebbero essere un ricordo tra due settimane durante il weekend del mondiale, oppure no…

It seems that someone has worked hard to compete with climate and make it less monotonous the course of this world championship. The images you can see on the official site are misleading in the sense that they are overtaken by events: those are not more the banks on which will be held the match and the official trainings, but in their place there is now what you’re seeing in these pictures. Even now the bulldozers are at work, two weeks before the event. I’m not an engineer and have to be cautious when we begin to value the others work, but knowing the way things are done in the sad thing called Italy, I strongly suspect that the reinforcement actions, if they were really necessary, could be carried out in a less devastating way and especially at the right time. I wonder how would occur today the Brian a few days befor the event, if it would be an English canal.

Sembra che qualcuno si sia impegnato molto per far concorrenza al clima e rendere meno monotono lo svolgimento di questo mondiale. Le immagini che potete vedere sul documento ufficiale presente a questo indirizzo sono fuorvianti, nel senso che sono superate dagli eventi: quelle non sono più le sponde su cui si svolgeranno le due gare e le relative prove, mentre al loro posto oggi c’è ciò che state vedendo in queste immagini. Ancora adesso le ruspe sono all’opera, a due settimane dall’evento. Non sono un ingegnere e bisogna essere cauti quando ci si mette a valutare la fatica altrui ma, conoscendo il modo in cui si fanno le cose nella triste cosa chiamata Italia, ho il forte sospetto che i lavori di rinforzo, ammesso che fossero davvero necessari, potevano essere svolti in modo meno impattante e sopratutto nei tempi giusti. Mi chiedo come si presenterebbe oggi il Brian a pochi giorni dalla gara, se fosse stato un canale inglese.

There would be many things to say about some fake smile that seen around, but sometimes it’s better to close both eyes and looking the other way; we call it cheto vivere (live peaceful). What you may not know is that there’s no difference between that people who work at the national and local levels, or between members of different political parties. Of course, someone manages to escape from the general mediocrity, even if their number is so low as to be less than of the flies in a country of constipated. This is not simple populism, but something worse: it is tragic, objective realism that no one can contradict (try to read the news on the pages of any newspaper). The first thing you need to keep in mind when hear talk about of public works on the Italian territory, is that these are primarily functional in search of electoral support.

Ci sarebbero molte cose da dire su certi sorrisi fasulli che si vedono in giro, ma a volte è meglio chiudere entrambi gli occhi e voltarsi dall’altra parte; in Veneto-Friuli si chiama cheto vivere. La cosa che forse non tutti sanno è che non vi è alcuna differenza tra i personaggi che operano a livello nazionale e quelli locali, o tra gli appartenenti ai diversi partiti. Certo, qualcuno riesce a salvarsi dalla mediocrità generale, anche se il loro numero è così esiguo da essere inferiore a quello delle mosche in un paese di stitici. Non si tratta di populismo spiccio, ma di qualcosa di peggio: è tragico, obbiettivo realismo che nessuno può contraddire (provate a leggere le notizie presenti sulle pagine di un qualsiasi quotidiano). La prima cosa che dovete tenere a mente quando sentite parlare di opere pubbliche sul territorio italico, è che queste sono prima di tutto funzionali alla ricerca del consenso elettorale.

Una cosa tristissima, ma non esclusiva di questo tristissimo paese. Il territorio del Giappone continua a godere dello stesso trattamento: la spasmodica ricerca del consenso elettorale ha spinto molti politicanti a promuovere il lavoro delle ruspe al punto che quasi tutti i fiumi di quel paese hanno subito la cementificazione degli argini, addirittura a livello di ruscelli d’alta montagna. Mal comune mezzo gaudio diceva qualcuno tanto tanto tempo fa, ma di mezzo gaudio sinceramente non ne vedo nemmeno l’ombra. In Giappone uno dei tre fiumi a essersi salvato è il Nagara, protetto da editti governativi per un motivo ben preciso: dalle sue acque provengono gli ayu destinati alla tavola dell’imperatore, che di certo non potevano permettersi di puzzare di cemento. Mi viene da pensare che se il canale Brian avesse fornito i carassi per la mensa degli esausti presidenti della repubblica italiana, non avrebbe subito certi maltrattamenti.

Ok, it’s not the case of this canal: there’s not concrete on his banks and the grass will grow again, but other Italic streams haven’t been so lucky. Anyway you will not even possible to capture the pumpkinseed among the numerous bank plants (that now there’re no more). This sign indicates a prohibition of fishing for biological recovery that willlast until the running of the event. The aim is to protect the fish from stress factors due to the high number of events that taking place in this canal, too bad to deserve protection from certain enlightened minds was the canal itself. As you can see from the second picture, they seem to have eaten at least a good meter of bank; the plants that protrude from the water indicate the point where extended the original bank. The rest is clay mud that sticks like glue everywhere. On second thought it may not be a disadvantage: if you use modeling clay to prepare the fuillis, well now that I no longer need to bring it from home.

Ok, non è il caso di questo canale: non hanno posato cemento sulle sue sponde e l’erba ricrescerà, ma altri corsi d’acqua non sono stati così fortunati. Tra l’altro non sarà nemmeno più possibile catturare i persici sole, numerosissimi tra le piante del sottoriva (che non ci sono più).Questo cartello indica un divieto di pesca per riposo biologico che durerà fino allo svolgimento del mondiale. Lo scopo è di tutelare il pesce da fattori di stress dovuti all’alto numero di gare che si svolgono, peccato che a meritare tutela da certe menti illuminate fosse il canale stesso. Come si può vedere dalla seconda foto, sembra che si siano mangiati almeno un metro abbondante di sponda; le piante che fuoriesco dall’acqua indicano il punto in cui arrivava la sponda originale. Il resto è fango argilloso che si appiccica ovunque come colla. A pensarci bene potrebbe non essere uno svantaggio: se usate il pongo per preparare il fuillis, beh ora non serve più che ve lo portiate da casa.

The two photos were taken from the same point and the subject is the area called “alla pioppa” (at the poplar), but on two different dates: May 3, 2009 (the one above), May 26, 2013 (the one below). The works for bank consolidation were considered urgent and improvement, as well as absolutely necessary for the performance of the next world cup; the magnificent trees that you see in the first picture had already been eliminated in recent years. Need comments? If you are matchanglers who will attend the event, then you should prepare two prayers: the first one will be to not end up in the areas where operated the bulldozers, and if that doesn’t work, use the second one for not make it rain on those days.

Le due foto sono state scattate grossomodo dallo stesso punto e hanno per soggetto la zona detta “alla pioppa”, ma in due date diverse: il 3 maggio 2009 (quella sopra), il 26 maggio 2013 (quella sotto, che è poi la data in cui è stato realizzato l’articolo). Il lavori di consolidamento della sponda sono stati considerati urgenti e migliorativi, oltre che assolutamente necessari per lo svolgimento del prossimo mondiale per club; i magnifici alberi che vedete nella prima foto erano già stati eliminati da qualche anno. Servono commenti? Se siete garisti che dovranno partecipare alla manifestazione, allora vi conviene prepararvi due preghiere: la prima servirà per non finire nei settori dove hanno operato le ruspe e, se non dovesse funzionare, usate la seconda affinché non abbia a piovere in quei giorni.

Seeing this photo it’s tempting to think of a intact rural environment and of a beautiful countryside. If you really are thinking so, then stop because it’s not: the northeastern regions of Veneto and Friuli, like much of the peninsula, are affected by a very strong concreting favored by a political culture that doesn’t think in terms of restructuring and reconstruction of the areas urban, but to the savage edification of the agricultural land. The use of the land is dramatic and you will realize when driving across these regions: seeing the cranes at work on construction sites, remember that three times to four it is speculation, often of poor quality, and usefulness especially in a historical period like the present; here in the northeast there’s the record of closures and bankruptcies. So why they do it? It seems hard to believe, but local administrators raking in money by the mere fact of allowing the construction of buildings within their territory, regardless of their utility. This fruit of the Italiot genius also has a name: it’s called infrastructure costs, and you can well understand that more concessions are signed and more money coming into the coffers of the municipalities. Who will be the leaders of this and other metastases?

Vedendo questa foto si è tentati a pensare ad un ambiente rurale integro e ad una campagna meravigliosa. Se veramente lo state pensando, allora fermatevi perché non è così: le regioni nordorientali del Veneto e del Friuli, come gran parte della penisola, sono affette da una fortissima cementificazione del territorio favorita da una cultura politica portata non alla ristrutturazione a alla ricostruzione delle zone urbane, ma all’edificazione selvaggia a danno dei terreni agricoli. Il consumo di territorio in atto è drammatico e ve ne renderete conto percorrendo le strade di queste regioni: vedendo le gru all’opera nei cantieri, ricordatevi che tre volte su quattro si tratta di speculazione edilizia fine a se stessa e che quello che stanno costruendo, talvolta di qualità scadente, non ha alcuna reale utilità tanto più in un periodo storico come quello attuale; qui al nordest si registra il record di chiusure e di fallimenti. E allora perché lo fanno? Sembra difficile a credersi, ma gli amministratori locali incassano denaro per il solo fatto di permettere la costruzione di immobili sul loro territorio, a prescindere dalla reale utilità. Questo frutto della genialità italiota ha pure un nome: si chiamano oneri di urbanizzazione, e potete ben capire che più concessioni vengono firmate e più soldi entrano nelle casse delle amministrazioni comunali. Chi saranno mai i responsabili di questa come di altre metastasi?

This is an emblematic image about the fishing style in the canal Brian: the French pole makes it well but in 90 percent of cases the sectors will be won with the match rod, so never forget to treat the long-baiting even when fishing short. The other side is covered with a thick reeds which give the certainty of rudds presence; there are nevertheless some places without the opposite reeds. The local matchanglers call them “wailing walls” and if you will have the misfortune to finish in the wrong sectors, you’ll understand the reason of the name.

Questa è un’immagine emblematica dello stile di pesca nel canale Brian: la roubaisienne rende bene ma nel 90 per cento dei casi i settori verranno vinti con la match rod, pertanto mai dimenticare di curare la pasturazione lunga anche quando si sta pescando corti. La sponda opposta è ricoperta di un folto canneto che da la certezza della presenza delle scardole; ci sono tuttavia alcuni tratti privi del canneto opposto. I garisti locali li chiamano “muri del pianto”, e se avrete la sfortuna di capitare in quei picchetti capirete perché.

A very important thing: always in the canal Brian, like many other Italic waters, baiting is realized using light-colored, medium-large grain and sweet taste groundbaits, which are the typical Italic ones for crucians and carps. If you ask to a local angler some information about how he use the ground, almost certainly he will explain the way in which he dig his little garden and how well grow potatoes, beans and pumpkins on a ground worked as it should. Seriously, you have to know that the use of bloodworms and fuillis is strictly prohibited in matches of the lower league and the canal Brian knows them only during the dispute of the Super Eccellenza (once a year), the competition that allows the qualification to the final Italic championship which takes place in the fall; a situation at the opposit of what happens in the rest of Europe. Anyway don’t worry: at the world championship many strange prohibitions will be suspended and you’ll be free to use the bait you prefer.

Una cosa importantissima: da sempre nel canale Brian, come il molte altre acque italiche, la pasturazione avviene usando sfarinati di colore chiaro, grana medio-grossa e dal sapore dolce, che sono poi le tipiche pasture italiche per carassi e carpe. Se chiedete a un garista locale qualche informazione sul modo di usare le terre, quasi sicuramente lui vi spiegherà il modo in cui vanga il suo orticello e di quanto bene crescano le patate, i fagioli e le zucche su una terra lavorata come si deve. Scherzi a parte, dovete sapere che l’uso del ver de vase e dei fuillis è severamente vietato nelle gare dei campionati inferiori e il Brian lo conosce solo in occasione della disputa della gara di Super Eccellenza, il torneo che permette la qualifica alla finale del campionato italico che si svolge in autunno (cioè una volta l’anno); una situazione agli antipodi rispetto a ciò che avviene nel resto d’Europa. Ad ogni modo non preoccupatevi: in occasione del mondiale molti strani divieti verranno sospesi e sarete liberi di usare le esche che vorrete.

An alternative to baits inserted directly into the groundbait container: with the thumb practice a cavity in the flour and insert some larvae at its center.

Un’alternativa alle esche inserite direttamente nel contenitore della pastura: con il pollice si pratica una cavità nello sfarinato e vi si inseriscono alcune larve al suo centro.

Fishing with the long pole accuracy is important, but here on Brian there are some variables to keep in mind and that affect to the speed current: the flow of the tides (one meter at maximum) and the presence of a barrier near the mouth of the canal. I will return to this topic, but immediately remember that current conditions can vary greatly within the same fishing session, with water coming down fast, goes up slow, or be completely still. As you can see this is a venue with many faces, and get to see that one of mullets could be decisive for the classification of some sectors. Remember that under the tip you have five meters water.

Pescando con la roubaisienne la precisione è importante, ma qui sul Brian vi sono alcune variabili da tenere bene a mente e che incidono sulla velocità della corrente: il flusso delle maree e la presenza di un’opera di sbarramento in prossimità della foce del canale. Ritorneremo su questo argomento, ma subito ricordatevi che le condizioni di corrente potranno variare molto nell’arco di una stessa sessione di pesca, con un’acqua che scende veloce, risale lenta, o completamente ferma. Come vedete questo è un canale con molte facce, e riuscire a vedere quella dei cefali potrebbe essere decisivo per la classifica di qualche settore. Ricordatevi che sotto la punta della canna avete cinque metri d’acqua.

Distance between rod tip and float depends on several factors, primarily by the strength of the current. Today served three grams of ballast, sometimes six, sometimes less than one gram. The only rule to follow is that… there are no rules. This is a canal where the best always win.

La distanza tra punta della canna e galleggiante dipende da vari fattori, in primis la forza della corrente. Oggi servivano tre grammi di zavorra, altre volte sei, altre volte meno di un grammo. L’unica regola da seguire è che… non esistono regole. Questo è un canale dove i migliori vincono sempre.

Dead maggots. The fish eat them willingly and are essential when you want a groundbait that worksbreaking down slowly.

Bigattini morti. I pesci li mangiano volentieri e sono indispensabile quando si desidera una pastura che lavori disgregandosi lentamente.

The white ones are the most classic bait in Brian. The local anglers use more these ones or earthworms.

  Quelli bianchi sono l’esca più classica usata nel Brian. I pescatori locali usano maggiormente questi o i lombrichi.

These are two typical hook bait. The hook is a Tubertini serie 18 number 18, but are also fine Gamakatsu as the 410B, the LS 610F or the very classic 6315B. You will absolutely have procure baits of red color, both in the normal size than rapalini (pinkies). The red color seems to remember bloodworms.

Questi sono due inneschi tipici. L’amo utilizzato è un Tubertini serie 18 numero 18, ma possono andare bene anche ami come i Gamakatsu 410B, l’LS 610F oppure il classicissimo 6315B. Dovrete assolutamente procurarvi esche di colore rosso, sia nella taglia normale che i rapalini (pinkies). Il colore rosso sembra ricordare ai pesci quello del ver de vase e non potrete farne a meno.

This is another bait you must have: earthworm manure. They are not easily found and the ones you see are from a ripe old compost heap whose humus seems to confer they excellent olfactory properties. Where all other baits fail, the earthworm manure resolves.

Questa è un’altra esca che dovrete avere: lombrichi di concimaia. Non si trovano facilmente e quelli che vedete provengono da una vecchia concimaia matura il cui humus sembra conferirgli proprietà olfattive eccellenti. Dove tutte le altre esche falliscono, il lombrico di concimaia risolve.

The hook bait for the pole fishing is with two earthworms at half body. Don’t think it would be a too big solution: even little brémes appreciate it.

L’innesco per la pesca a roubaisienne avviene appuntandone due a metà corpo. Non pensate che possa essere una soluzione troppo voluminosa: anche le piccole brémes sanno apprezzarlo.

This gentleman is Mauro Lanzarini and is one of the best matchanglers in Veneto-Friuli; he deserves the thanks for this short test. The venue over which we have made the photoshoot is not included between the dewatering of Staffolo and the location of Boccafossa, which will host the world cup for clubs, but downstream of the Boccafossa bridge. The Brian is a very regular canal and the characteristics are identical.

Questo signore è Mauro Lanzarini ed è uno dei migliori pescatori veneto-friulani; a lui va il ringraziamento per questa breve prova. Il tratto su cui abbiamo realizzato il servizio fotografico non è quello incluso tra l’idrovora di Staffolo e la località di Boccafossa, dove si svolgerà il mondiale per club, ma quello a valle del ponte di Boccafossa. Il Brian è un canale molto regolare e le caratteristiche sono identiche.

The elastic to insert into the pole and its tension are a good question mark: it will depend on the strength of the current, the fishing style, the fish under the rod. One millimeter can be a good general solution, also because a two pounds crucian, a nice carp or a big mullet… you’ll never put them into your keepnet with a 0.08 endline.

Il diametro dell’elastico da inserire nella roubaisienne e la sua tensione rappresentano un bel punto di domanda: dipenderanno dalla forza della corrente, dallo stile di pesca, dai pesci che si raduneranno sotto la canna. Un millimetro può rappresentare una buona soluzione generale, anche perché il carassio da chilo, una bella carpa o un grosso cefalo non si metteranno in nassa con finali dello 0.08.

As you can see from these pictures all baits are well appreciated. The Italian bréam are accustomed to maggots and earthworms, and the Mauro’s advice for you is: not to fall in love with a single bait, even when it calls bloodworm.

Come vedete da queste foto tutte le esche sono ben apprezzate. Le bréme italiane sono abituate ai bigattini e ai lombrichi, e il consiglio che Mauro si sente di dare è di non innamorarsi di un’unica esca, nemmeno quando si chiama ver de vase.

Another guest in this canal that comes directly from the sea. If things go wrong with the normal freshwater fish, you have to try to catch someone. Often with the mullets you can remedy to a compromised situation.

Un altro ospite presente nelle acque di questo canale e che risale direttamente dal mare. Se le cose dovessero andar male con i normali pesci d’acqua dolce, dovrete provare a catturarne qualcuno. Spesso con i cefali si può rimediare a una situazione compromessa.

Il mio amico Thomas Busatto li usa normalmente con i grossi cavedani nelle veloci acque del Naviglio Brenta, un canale profondo meno di due metri che unisce Padova alla laguna veneta.

Niente torpille: solo un bulk costitiuto da una decina di pallini a un metro dall’amo, più una scalata di altri pallini che si allargano man mano verso il basso. Un’alternativa è quella di chiudere a coppie i pallini sotto il bulk. Ad ogni modo molto dipende dalla forza della corrente e dalla vostra esperienza nella pesca in acque veloci. The perfect float adjustmen is something to be taken for granted, as is obvious the overadjustmen when fishing in fast water. When water fast flowing a solution is a final line who works completely resting on the bottom; thirty centimeters of 0.10 or 0.12 are an ideal fit. Nella pesca a lunga distanza rendono bene i lombrichi a pezzi da inserire nella pallina di pastura come vedete nella seconda foto. Per le mille stranezze che affliggono strano paese, dovete sapere che nelle gare normali l’uso dei lombrichi tagliati è vietato dai regolamenti.

There are two fishing lines with English rod: attached to the opposite side with 1-1,5 meter deep in search of big rudds stationed in the reeds, or eight meters apart where the depth is much greater. For fishing lines away from the reeds the lines can be made in two ways: with fixed 18-30 grams wagglers (depends on the wind) or with sliding 25-30+ grams wagglers (depends on the current speed).

Ci sono due linee di pesca con la canna inglese: a ridosso della sponda opposta con un metro-un metro di mezzo di profondità alla ricerca delle grosse scardole che stazionano nel canneto, oppure a otto metri di distanza dove il fondale è molto più sostenuto. Per la pesca lontano dal canneto le lenze possono essere costriuite in due modi: con waggler fisso da 18-30 grammi (dipende dal vento) o con quello scorrevole da 25-30 grammi o più (dipende dalla velocità della corrente).

If you are a matchangler who should angling during the next world championship, then don’t smile: when you’ll have tried everything and have arrived at the conclusion that to save the result and honor you absolutely have to dig out some big rudd from the opposite reed, in the first place be careful not to bait the fish too long, especially with sticky maggots. The result is that it will not come out more from plants. Secondly you have to take big risks, which become huge whereas in some places the reeds tend to throw forward into the water. No mercy, no prisoniers says someone in 300, and the same seems to think that reeds. To prevent damage keep a good gap between the main line on the spool and the one who binds the hook: for example a direct 0.18 mm line and a final one of 0.10-0.12 mm. Se siete garisti che dovranno pescare nel mondiale, allora è meglio che non ridiate: se le avete provate tutte e siete arrivati alla conclusione che per salvare risultato e onore dovete assolutamente stanare qualche grossa scardola dal canneto opposto, in primo luogo state attenti a non pasturare troppo lunghi, sopratutto con i bigattini incollati. Il risultato è che non usciranno più dalle piante. In secondo luogo dovrete prendere dei grossi rischi, che diventano immensi considerando che in certi punti le canne tendono o gettarsi in avanti verso l’acqua. Per evitare danni mantenete un buon divario tra la lenza madre e il filo che lega l’amo: imbobinate nel mulinello un filo diretto dello 0.18 e usate un finale dello 0,10-0,12 millimetri. In caso contrario a fine gara assisterete a uno spettacolo consueto qui sul Brian: vedrete passare un tizio su una piccola barca intento a raccogliere i galleggianti rimati attaccati al canneto. A errore compiuto ho chiesto a Mauro di posare con la canna piegata per qualche foto d’effetto.

Vi consiglio anche di andare a leggervi l’articolo dal quale ho ricavato questa immagine che, fatta eccezione per l’header del sito ritraente un persico sole, è stata la prima foto in assoluto pubblicata su RedAngler. A ogni modo dubito che in caso di forte maltempo verrà utilizzato questo tratto di canale: è più logico, sensato e sopratutto umano che chi di dovere ricorra al tratto più a monte verso l’abitato di Boccafossa, risparmiato dalle ruspe, o quello subito a valle del ponte dove abbiamo scattato le foto per l’articolo.
