“Piove, governo ladro!” it usually exclaims in the peninsula when the weather gets wet, as to say that the responsibility is always sure. Just give a casual glance at any Italian newspaper to realize how it’s a good saying for every occasion.

“Piove, governo ladro!” si esclama di solito nella penisola quando il tempo è parecchio umido, come a dire che la responsabilità è a senso unico qualsiasi cosa accada. Del resto basta poggiare uno sguardo distratto ai giornali italiani per accorgersi di quanto esso sia un detto buono per ogni occasione.

The first two hours spent along the upper course of the river Sile have been a lethal boredom: nothing, not even a flicker of the tip which was not determined by a rain’s drop. It gets ever stronger the idea to try again another day. The photo you see is more significant than it appears, and can tell about a crucial technical detail: float and rod tip work at the same distance from the bank.

Le prime due ore trascorse lungo l’alto corso del fiume Sile sono state di una noia letale: nulla, nemmeno un tremolio dell’astina che non fosse determinato dall’ennesima goccia di pioggia che la colpiva. E si fa sempre più forte l’idea riprovare in un altro momento. La foto che vedete è più significativa di quanto appare, tanto che anche da sola è in grado di raccontare un particolare tecnico molto interessante: galleggiante e punta della canna lavorano alla stessa distanza dalla sponda.

‘You think to take pictures, that fish are my business‘ Mauro Lanzarini says to me; he’s one of the best anglers from all over the northeast, and when I say best I mean that you can count them on the fingers of a truncated hand. But the words don’t cost anything, and proof about it is one of the Italians’ biggest flaws: the abuse of adjectives. There are more than 25,000 ones in their dictionary and the temptation to put them inappropriately into sentences is always great. Among the most inflated ones there are ‘bello’, ‘very’, ‘important’ and of course ‘best’. When using certain adjectives, you should always be prepared to demonstrate with facts, and with the images.

“Tu pensa a fare le foto, che ai pesci ci penso io” mi dice Mauro Lanzarini, uno dei migliori pescatori alla passata di tutto il nord est, e quando dico ‘migliori’ significa che li potete contare sulle dita di una mano monca. Le parole però non costano nulla, prova ne è uno dei più grandi difetti degli italiani: l’abuso di aggettivi. Ce ne sono oltre 25000 nel loro vocabolario e la tentazione di infilarne a sproposito nelle frasi è sempre grande. Tra i più inflazionati vi sono ‘bello’, ‘molto’, ‘importante’ e ovviamente ‘migliore’. Quando si usano certi aggettivi bisognerebbe sempre essere pronti a dimostrare con i fatti, e con le immagini.

Allora continuo a rimanermene tranquillo sotto l’ombrellone, ad aspettare fiducioso. Che noia però! A un certo punto ho trovato interessante perfino questo soggetto.

Instead they don’t care about rain and cold. Usually in the spring you can see the parents followed by 5-6 chicks, then dropped to number in the fall; seeing scenes like this, I always wonder what happened to the other ones. Diseases and rats will certainly play their part, but the river Sile is also inhabited by huge pike and wels catfish: it’s not hard to imagine that some of those chicks has been predated from below.

Loro invece se ne fregano della pioggia e del freddo, non gli cambia nulla. Di solito in primavera si vedono i genitori seguiti da 5-6 pulcini, per poi scendere di numero in autunno; nel vedere scene come questa mi chiedo sempre che fine abbiano fatto gli altri piccoli. Malattie e ratti faranno sicuramente la loro parte, ma le acque del Sile sono abitate anche da lucci enormi e da siluri: non è difficile pensare che qualcuno di quei pulcini abbia subito una predazione dal basso.

It’s stopped raining and I take some pictures for the equipment. When he goes on the hunt for big chubs, Mauro prepares only one rod: he knows exactly which line to use based on water conditions. Today, however, has opened three Bolognesi rod, a fact unusual for him and you can consider it as an exception in honor of the photo shoot. So, let’s see these three gems: two Daiwa Competition 7115 and one Competition-X, all of seven meters long; CP 7115 were engineered in Japan, the second one in Great Britain. Both of these models have been marketed over a decade ago, and of course they are out of catalog now. The Bolognese style is practiced almost exclusively in Italy, rarely during matches: even when fishing for pleasure, Italic anglers tend to no use the whip and Bolognese in favor of the match rod and pole. In certain types of fishing, however, the traditional Italic technique is more effective than any other style.

Ha smesso di piovere; ne approfitto per qualche foto all’attrezzatura. Quando va a caccia di grossi cavedani, Mauro prepara una sola canna: sa esattamente quale lenza impiegare in base alle condizioni dell’acqua. Oggi invece ha aperto tre bolognesi, un fatto inconsueto per lui; potete considerarlo come un’eccezione in onore del servizio fotografico. Allora vediamoli questi tre gioiellini. Si tratta di due Daiwa Competition 7115 e di una Competition-X, tutte di sette metri; la prima è stata disegnata in Giappone, la seconda in Gran Bretagna. Entrambi questi modelli sono stati commercializzati oltre una decina di anni fa e oggi sono fuori catalogo. La pesca a bolognese viene praticata quasi esclusivamente in Italia, quasi mai durante le gare: anche quando pescano per diletto, i pescatori italici tendono a non usare più la canna fissa e la bolognese in favore della match rod e della roubaisienne. In certi tipi di pesca in fiume, però, la tradizionale tecnica italica è più efficace di qualsiasi altro stile.

It may seem strange, but the best producer of Bolognese rods is not Italian (although there are many companies working on carbon in Italy). The best bolognese come from Tokyo or from Wishaw, and are so well made that certain models are hardly available on the second hand market: in fact, those who appreciate the value of these products unlikely sells them. Also note that a tool of this type does not suffer the wear of a roubaisienne, thus with a good Bolognese you can fish for a life. The models of foreign brands are almost always produced exclusively for the Italian market, and if you are interested in having some of high level, you have to take a plane or buy them on Internet. Don’t underestimate the second hand market: with a small cost you may award rods at the highest level. Unlike what happens with the pole, a well made Bolognese rod don’t need improvements and is virtually timeless. Both models of Daiwa were designed to confer them an medium-light action for fishing with floats up to 8 grams. Mauro’s favorite is the Competition-X, which has a softer and lighter action than the CP 7115.

Potrà sembrare strano, ma il migliore produttore di canne bolognesi non è italiano (pur essendoci in Italia molte aziende che lavorano il carbonio). Le migliori bolognesi vengono da Tokio o da Wishaw, e sono così ben realizzate che difficilmente certi modelli sono reperibili sul mercato dell’usato: infatti, chi sa apprezzare il valore di questi prodotti difficilmente se ne libera. Tenete anche presente che un attrezzo di questo tipo non subisce l’usura tipica di una canna ad innesti, quindi con una buona bolognese potrete pescarci una vita. I modelli di marchi stranieri quasi sempre vengono prodotti esclusivamente per il mercato italiano, e se siete interessati ad averne di alto livello dovrete prendere un aereo o acquistarle via Internet. Vi consiglio di non sottovalutare il mercato dell’usato: con una spesa modesta ci si possono aggiudicare fusti di altissimo livello. A differenza di quanto avviene con le roubaisienne, la bolognese ben realizzata non è suscettibile di miglioramenti eclatanti e praticamente non ha tempo. Entrambi i modelli di Daiwa sono stati disegnati per conferirgli un’azione medio leggera indicata per una passata con galleggianti fino a 8 grami. La preferita di Mauro resta la Competition-X: rispetto alla CP7115, ha un’azione ancora più morbida e leggera.

A line with a two grams flat float was built on one of the Competition 7115, a solution that you usually see on the poles. ‘The real limits are in people’s minds‘ Mauro told me when I asked the reason for a so unusual choice. I had never seen this type of float in Bolognese fishing, but has its own logic: the line will not be launched towards the center of the river, as you normally would think, but will work under the tip. The action will be very similar to that of a whip or a pole. Think about it: the current is much slower near the bank than the center of the river, and the four meters depth allows to have only a little line between the tip and the float. Under these conditions the control is maximum, so that the reel is downgraded to a reserve of line, only necessary to counter the leakage of large fish. The bail will almost always be closed: the line is just lying on the water’s surface as if you were employing a whip rod.

Su una delle due Competition 7115 è stata costruita una lenza con un galleggiante piatto di due grammi, una soluzione che di solito si vede sulle canne ad innesti. ‘I limiti veri stanno nella testa della gente’ mi ha risposto Mauro quando gli ho chiesto la ragione di una scelta tanto inusuale. Non avevo mai visto usare questo tipo di segnalatore su una bolognese, tuttavia ha una sua logica: la lenza non verrà lanciata verso il centro del fiume, come normalmente si sarebbe portati a pensare, bensì lavorerà sotto la punta. L’azione sarà molto simile a quella di una canna ad innesti oppure una fissa. Pensateci: la corrente è molto più lenta nei pressi della sponda rispetto al centro del fiume, e la profondità di quattro metri (sui sette della canna) permette di avere liberi solo pochi metri di filo tra la punta e il galleggiante. In queste condizioni il controllo sulla lenza è massimo, al punto che il mulinello è declassato a riserva di filo, necessario solo per contrastare le fughe di grossi pesci. L’archetto resterà quasi sempre chiuso: la lenza viene distesa sulla superficie dell’acqua come se si stesse adoperando una canna fissa.

At other times, the little flat float worked perfectly with the huge chubs in the province of Venice, but not today: they have shown a preference for a traditional one. The Competition-X W70 was prepared with a classical float by 1.5 grams, while the other Competition 7115 had a model just heavier. The latter will be the winning line of the day.

In altre occasioni il piccolo galleggiante piatto ha funzionato perfettamente con i cavedani enormi della provincia di Venezia, ma non stavolta: oggi hanno dimostrato di preferire una lenza tradizionale. La Competition-X W70 è stata preparata con un classico galleggiante da 1,5 grammi, mentre l’altra Competition 7115 portava un modello appena più pesante. Sarà quest’ultima la lenza vincente della giornata.

It starts to rain again, governo ladro! But the worst come by the river: no response in two hours. It seems that there’s nothing over there under the water’s surface, a total desert. Mauro calms me: big chubs are always on the market and only in the coldest winter days in January and February you can make a flop, anyway rather rare. November is a great month again.

Ricomincia a piovere, governo ladro! Ma il peggio viene dal fiume: nessuna risposta nonostante siano trascorse due ore. Sembra che non vi sia nulla là sotto, il deserto totale. Mauro mi tranquillizza: i grossi cavedani ci sono sempre e solo nelle più gelide giornate invernali di gennaio e febbraio si può incappare in un cappotto, peraltro piuttosto raro. Novembre è un periodo ancora ottimo.

I’ve just to go back under my umbrella: even if the body of my Alpha 700 is weather sealed, the same cannot be said about the Sigma 17-70. Better not risk. The weatherman said that the climate would be improved in the late morning, with the sun peeking through the clouds. The problem is that in Italy the weather forecast changes every half hour, and sometimes you have more chances of winning at roulette.

Non mi resta che tornarmene sotto l’ombrellone: anche se il corpo della mia Alpha 700 è tropicalizzato, lo stesso non posso dire del Sigma 17-70. Meglio non rischiare. Le previsioni meteo della sera prima dicevano che il clima sarebbe migliorato in tarda mattinata, con tanto di sole a fare capolino tra le nuvole. Il problema è che in Italia le previsioni del tempo cambiano ogni mezz’ora, e a volte si ha più probabilità di vincere alla roulette.

It stopped raining and the temperature seems to rise slightly. The change coincides with the first bite: it seems a really nice fish, but we will not see it. The chub manages to free itself, even as the next two ones. I ask Mauro if it is appropriate to change the hook, but he replies with a smile. He knows these fish very well, and the problem is not the hook.

Non piove più e anche la temperatura sembra salire leggermente. Il cambiamento coincide con la prima abboccata: sembra davvero un bel pesce, ma non lo vedremo. Riesce a slamarsi, come ci riusciranno anche i successivi due. Dico a Mauro se non sia il caso di cambiare l’amo, ma lui mi risponde con un sorriso. Conosce bene questi pesci, e sa che il problema non è l’amo.

The clouds begin to open, you can see the blue sky through them; perhaps today the Italian weathermen have guessed it for real. What you see is the CP 7115′s action, with the tip bent under the force of a chub over one kilo.

Le nuvole iniziano ad aprirsi, si intravvede l’azzurro del cielo; forse oggi ci hanno azzeccato per davvero. Quella che vedete è l’azione della Competition 7115 curvata sotto la spinta di un cavedano da oltre un chilo.

Here’s the result of the fourth strike, while it approaches to the landing net: a small head compared to the average of this venue, a fish of circa eight hundred grams. And also naive, as are young specimens: it devoured the bait without delay, as you can guess by the hook well planted beyond lips.

Eccolo allora il risultato della quarta abboccata, mentre si avvicina alla testa del guadino: un esemplare piccolo rispetto alla media di queste parti, un pesce di circa ottocento grammi. Direi anche ingenuo, come lo sono gli esemplari giovani: ha ingoiato l’esca senza farsi problemi, lo si può intuire dall’amo piantato ben oltre le labbra.

The choice of a stretch free by submerged aquatic plants is not random: big chubs of this river first trend to gain the strong current in the center, and then the meadows near the bank. Once they are in, hardly the 0.10 mm terminal line will allow you to drive them out.

La scelta di un tratto di sponda libero da piante acquatiche sommerse non è casuale: i grossi cavedani di questo fiume tentano per prima cosa di guadagnare la forte corrente del centro, e come ultima risorsa gli erbai presenti sotto la sponda. Una volta infilatisi, difficilmente il terminale da 0,10 mm vi permetterà di stanarli.

This is the second fish of the day, well over one kilo. It can seem a trivial concept, but a big fish is also heavy and not easy to handle, even more because it will tend to squirm. Along the banks and by social networks happen to see scenes by horror splatter film: people intent on raising big fish with fingers into the gill or even by pressing on the eyes (especially with carp). What you see in the picture is the only correct way to lift a big fish with one hand: the operculum is used only for a partial index finger grip, which remains far from the gill arches. But when the fish is too big, the only correct way to free it by hook, is keeping it inside the landing net’s head and handled with both hands, or not handled it if you don’t know how to do it.

Questo è il secondo pesce della giornata, ben oltre il chilo di peso. Sarà un concetto banale, ma un grosso pesce è anche pesante e non facile da maneggiare, tanto più perché tenderà a dimenarsi. Lungo le sponde e sui social network capita di vedere scene da film horror splatter: gente intenta a sollevare grossi pesci con le dita conficcate nelle branchia o addirittura premendo sugli occhi (questo sopratutto con le carpe). Quello che vedete nella foto è l’unico modo corretto per sollevare un grosso pesce con una sola mano: l’opercolo è usato solo per una presa parziale del dito indice, che rimane lontano dagli archi branchiali. Ma quando il pesce è troppo grosso, va slamato dentro la testa del guadino e maneggiato con entrambe le mani, o non maneggiato affatto se non si sa come farlo.

I’ve seen the worst things during fishing competitions, both in commercials than in natural environments. It seems incredible, but in Italy match anglers are the first that don’t know how to handle a fish, and unfortunately regulations don’t help. Chubs of river Sile are perfect, at least in the upper stretch where there are no competitions and big fish let themselves captured only by the true anglers.

Le cose peggiori le ho viste fare durante le gare di pesca, sia nei carpodromi che in ambienti naturali. Sembra incredibile, ma i garisti sono i primi a non sapere come maneggiare correttamente il pesce, e purtroppo i regolamenti non aiutano. I cavedani del Sile sono perfetti, almeno nel tratto alto dove non si svolgono gare e i grossi pesci si lasciano catturare solo dai pescatori veri.

In spite of the water raised, the quantity of larvae ended up in the river is minimal at every launch.

A dispetto dell’acqua sollevata dall’impatto, la quantità di larve finite nel fiume è minima a ogni lancio. Lo vedremo tra poco.

It stopped raining and the temperature became milder. Mauro try again with his favorite rod and the line with a gram and a half, but didn’t get any results (by the way: at this link you’ll find Daiwa Bolognese rod models currently on the market).

Non piove più e anche la temperatura si è fatta mite. Mauro prova ancora con la sua canna preferita e la montatura da un grammo e mezzo, senza però ottenere alcun risultato.

It seems incredible, but an extra half a gram on the line has been crucial to convince the fish. Evidently they prefered a more stable presentation near the bottom.

Sembra incredibile, ma mezzo grammo in più sulla lenza è stato determinante per convincere i pesci ad abboccare. Evidentemente preferiscono una presentazione più stabile in prossimità del fondo.

It deserves a close-up. This animals are perfectly healthy and fat, grown in high quality water.

Merita un primo piano. Sono animali perfettamente sani e grassi, cresciuti in un acque di alta qualità.

Let’s analyze the baiting technique. This picture tells some interesting things, the most intuitive of which is that the baiting is always thrown downstream the point where the angler is, in spite of the flow and of the water wall high four meters. The high density is the target, as well as a limited quantity of maggots. Small and dense balls are obtained by adding large amount of gravel. This allows firstly to concentrate the larvae on the bottom with a minimum deviation respect to the point of entry into the water.

Analizziamo ora la tecnica di pasturazione. Questa foto racconta tre cose interessanti, la più intuitiva delle quali riguarda il fatto che il richiamo viene gettato sempre a valle della postazione in cui si trova il pescatore, e questo nonostante la corrente e il muro d’acqua di quattro metri. È l’elevata densità a fare la differenza, oltre che a un quantitativo limitato di larve. Palline piccole e dense si ottengono aggiungendo grandi quantità di ghiaino. Questo permette in primo luogo di far giungere il richiamo sul fondo con una minima deviazione rispetto al punto di entrata in acqua.

Many anglers think that to catch lots of chubs serves many kilos of maggots, or spending much money in baits (one kilogram of maggots cost around €7 in the peninsula). But the situation is different, luckily: looking at this picture it’s hard to find two larvae glued together, so great is the amount of inert (much cheaper). The secret is this: in addition to the high density, you get the advantage of providing less food to the fish avoiding to feed them too, putting them in competition for food.

Molti pescatori sono convinti che per fare una bella pescata di cavedani servano chili su chili di bigattini, ovvero spendendo cifre non trascurabili (un chilo di bigattini costa oggi nella penisola €7.5). Le cose stanno diversamente: guardando questa foto si fa fatica a trovare due larve incollate tra loro, tanto è grande il quantitativo di inerte (molto più economico). Il segreto è tutto qui: oltre all’elevata densità, si ottiene il vantaggio di offrire poco cibo al pesce evitando di saziarlo e mettendolo in competizione alimentare.

Also in this picture taken inside the bucket, you see very few larvae in contact with each others: you are seeing four kilos and a half of quartz sprayed with a kilo and a half of maggots. This report also offers another advantage not to be despised: it saves a lot of money. It’s not the same thing to buy 10 kilos of gravel in a sport fishing store rather than a resale of building materials.

Anche in questa foto scattata dentro al secchio si vedono pochissime larve a contatto tra loro: state vedendo quattro chili e mezzo di quarzite spruzzate con un chilo e mezzo di bigattini. Questo rapporto offre anche un altro vantaggio da non disprezzare: permette di risparmiare un sacco di soldi. Non è la stessa cosa acquistare 10 kg di ghiaino in un negozio di pesca sportiva piuttosto che in una rivendita di materiali per edilizia.

The boiled hemp is another ace for the predator of big chubs. Unlike the ball of maggots and gravel, it has to be slingshot few meters upstream from the fishing spot.

La canapa bollita è un altro asso nella manica del predatore di grossi cavedani. A differenza della pallina di bigattini e ghiaia, va fiondata qualche metro a monte rispetto al punto di pesca.

As for the gravel: you can save a lot of money by buying it in stores for animal food, but be careful. Hemp’s seeds must have the embryo still alive, this means that hemp must be pretty fresh. If during cooking the white radicle will not emerge, it means that the product was not enough fresh and even less palatable by the fish. Carp anglers are aware of these issues and make their business in stores of flour for animals, which are able to meet their demands: if you know a carp angler, then you also know where to find the best hemp.

Vale quanto detto per la ghiaia: si possono risparmiare molti soldi acquistandola nei negozi di alimenti per animali, ma attenzione a un particolare. Il seme della canapa deve avere l’embrione ancora vivo, ovvero deve essere abbastanza fresco. Se infatti durante la cottura non emergerà la radichetta bianca, significa che abbiamo un prodotto non fresco e men che meno appetibile al pesce. I carpisti sono consapevoli di queste problematiche e si riforniscono in negozi di farine per animali che sappiano soddisfare le loro richieste: se conoscete qualche carpista allora sapete anche dove trovare la canapa migliore.

Questo è uno dei due cavedanelli da 800 grammi che hanno rovinato la media della giornata; sono più ingenui e tendono a ingozzarsi accantonando la proverbiale diffidenza della specie.

The hook in the middle of the body allows the lure to sink and scroll with the same arrangement of other ones used as baiting. To create a solution like this, you need a very little hook, it is obvious, but to avoid damaging the larva it has also to be barbless. There are anglers who have enormous prejudice against these tools, believing that they may prejudice the captures than traditional models. Reality is that a real angler doesn’t need about a barb to catch nice fish, and this article proves it.

L’innesco a metà del corpo permette all’esca di affondare e scorrere sul fondale con lo stesso assetto delle altre usate come richiamo. Serve un amo molto piccolo, è ovvio, ma per evitare di ledere la larva esso dovrà anche essere privo dell’ardiglione. Ci sono pescatori che hanno enormi pregiudizi nei confronti di questi strumenti, ritenendo a torto che possano pregiudicare la cattura rispetto ai modelli tradizionali. La realtà è un’altra: chi sa davvero pescare i pesci li prende a prescindere dell’ardiglione, e questo articolo ne è la prova.

Big chubs are also smart and hardly you’ll catch someone with the hook into the oral apparatus: these animals test the deception just holding it between their lips. A good thing: the inner membranes are fragile and tend to tear easily when are injured by microscopic hooks. Other thing are the lips, made of more tenacious cartilage tissue and in which even a small barbless trinket is able to find a stable grip.

I cavedani grossi sono anche furbi e difficilmente ne guadinerete qualcuno con l’amo agganciato dentro l’apparato orale: sono animali che saggiano l’inganno tenendolo appena tra le labbra. Ed è una fortuna: le membrane interne sono fragili e tendono a lacerarsi facilmente quando punte da ami microscopici. Altra cosa sono le labbra, costituite di un tessuto cartilagineo ben più tenace in cui anche un oggettino senza ardiglione riesce a trovare una presa stabile.

Barbless hook facilitates the unhook preventing tearing of the soft tissues. There’s something more: a sized and quality disgorger like the Stonfo Little is essential not only to remove the hook properly, but also to respect the leader. Only a well realized disgorger is able to maintain the integrity of the terminal line, especially when it is very thin.

L’amo privo di ardiglione facilita la slamatura evitando di lacerare i tessuti molli. Ma non basta: uno slamatore dimensionato e di qualità come lo Stonfo Little è indispensabile non solo per togliere l’amo correttamente, ma anche per rispettare il filo su cui è legato. Solo uno slamatore ben realizzato è in grado di mantenere l’integrità del terminale, tanto più quando sottilissimo.

Once stopped raining, the family of swans decided to settle on the small jetty downstream. They were not the only ones to keep us company.

Una volta finito di piovere, la famigliola di cigni ha deciso di stabilirsi sul piccolo pontile a valle della nostra postazione. Non sono stati i soli a farci compagnia.

Every now and then on the bank behind us someone stopped to admire the harmonic curve drawn by the Daiwa. One of those people was Alessio, a young former carp angler convert to the match fishing (strange: usually the opposite occurs). Alessio told us about his recent experience occurred a few yards downstream. He had noticed that a gypsy was watching him, but had not given importance because it was broad daylight and there were people strolling. Weighty error, because the creature burglarized his car parked a few meters away. Unfortunately this is not a rare thing: they are aggressive and unscrupulous, and not even they fear of being caught because know that they will not remain just a day in prison. Italy is a country with discredited institutions, as well as crammed full of all sorts of misfits. A devastating mix.

Di tanto in tanto sulla sponda alle nostre spalle si fermava qualcuno ad ammirare la curva armonica disegnata dalla Daiwa. Una di quelle persone era Alessio, giovane ex carpista convertitosi alla pesca al colpo (cosa insolita: di solito avviene il contrario). Tra un cavedano e l’altro, Alessio ci ha parlato di una sua recente esperienza avvenuta pescando su uno spot qualche metro più a valle. Si era accorto che uno zingaro lo stava osservando, ma non gli aveva dato importanza poiché era pieno giorno e c’era gente che passeggiava. Gravissmo errore, dato che gli ha scassinato l’auto parcheggiata a pochi metri di distanza. Purtroppo non si tratta di una cosa rara: sono aggressivi e spregiudicati, e non temono nemmeno di essere scoperti giacché sanno che in caso non faranno nemmeno un giorno di galera. L’Italia è un paese dalle istituzioni screditate, oltre che piena zeppa di ogni sorta di sbandati. Un mix devastante.

A high quality Bolognese rod you handle with one hand, but after hours of fishing fatigue begins to be felt. Above all during the strike, which in chub fishing must be swift. Sopratutto nella fase di ferrata, che pescando il cavedano deve essere fulminea. Mauro ha tentato per l’ultima volta con la sua canna preferita, ma ancora i cavedani non hanno gradito il grammo e mezzo di zavorra. Questo stile di pesca a corto raggio può essere praticato anche con un altro tipo di attrezzo: la Barbara. Si tratta sempre di un attrezzo tipicamente italiano, un ibrido tra la Bolognese e la canna fissa, e per usare poche semplici parole è al 100% una canna fissa montata con microanelli e un micromulinello. Non voglio aggiungere altro in questo articolo, ma se in futuro ne avrò l’occasione vi proporrò una battuta di pesca realizzata con il sistema della Barbara.

On the W70 Mauro has inserted a little bit special reel, a customized version of the Mitchell Quartz distributed by Colmic fifteen years ago. It’s different from the standard versions for the silver color and balanced handle, for the rest the design was identical to the official ones. There was also a larger version called Excellent 900, but I think the series has not had commercial success primarily to the high price, and then because Quartz was rejected by the market. I cannot tell if the project were affected by the particular manufacturing defects, however it’s a shame because the issue was original.

Sulla W70 Mauro ha inserito un mulinello un pò speciale: si tratta di una versione personalizzata del Mitchell Quartz distribuita da Colmic una quindicina di anni fa. Si distingueva dai modelli standard per il colore argentato e la manovella con bilancere, per il resto il progetto era identico. Esisteva anche una versione di dimensioni maggiori chiamata Excellent 900, ma credo che la serie non abbia avuto un successo commerciale anzitutto per il prezzo elevato, e poi perché lo stesso Quartz è stato bocciato dal mercato. Non so dirvi se il progetto fosse affetto da particolari difetti di produzione, ad ogni modo è un peccato perché era un prodotto originale.

This is the reel that has taken all the fish today; there’re some interesting details in this picture. First: the line does not reach the spool’s edge, despite of that you can see in many catalogs. The reason you have already guessed, and is due to the fact that in this fishing style the it only serves as a reserve of line to contrast the fish flight, and not to cast the line far. For this reason are not required expensive tools: the reel you see costed €25 and has done its job flawlessly. The finger on the rotor is suggesting a completely closed drag: the fish escape must be tackled leaving turn the rotor to the contrary. Last consideration: the words “10 ball bearings” printed on the casing. You can imagine the quality of all that scrap-iron inserted to mere marketing purposes, always assuming they are all in. A further proof that it doesn’t need big budgets to get big fish.

Questo è il mulinello che ha preso tutti i pesci di oggi; a guardare la foto non si può fare a meno di notare alcune cose meritevoli di un commento. La prima: il filo non raggiunge il bordo della bobina, come invece si vede nelle immagini dei cataloghi. Il motivo già lo avete intuito, ed è dovuto al fatto che in questo stile di pesca serve solo da riserva di filo per contrastre le fughe dei pesci, e non per lanciare la lenza lontano. Proprio per tale motivo non sono richiesti attrezzi costosi: quello che vedete è costato 25 euro e, nonostante sia il figlio minore di un dio cinese, ha svolto il suo lavoro in modo impeccabile. Il dito posizionato sul rotore sta a suggerire una frizione completamente chiusa e l’antiritorno disinserito: la fuga del pesce va contrastata lasciandolo scorrere al contrario. Ultima considerazione: la scritta “10 ball bearings” stampata sulla carcassa. Vi lascio immaginare la qualità di tutta quella ferraglia propinata a meri fini di marketing, sempre ammesso che ci siano tutti. A ulteriore riprova che non servono grandi budget per prendere grandi pesci.

And is also a little fraud: make the fish bigger than it is in reality, taking advantage of the perspective effect in a short focal length. What you see, is the real size of a chub of over two kilograms (too large to be handle with one hand).

È una moda diffusa quanto ridicola, insulsa e banale quella di scattare fotografie con le braccia allungate e il pesce puntato verso l’obiettivo della fotocamera, quasi a voler infilarcelo di forza; di foto simili se ne vedono ancora parecchie sia sulle riviste che sul web. Ed pure parecchio trufaldina: ha lo scopo di voler far sembrare la cattura più grande di quello che è nella realtà sfruttando l’effetto prospettico in una focale corta. Quelle che vedete sono le dimensioni reali di un cavedano di oltre due chili (troppo grande per essere sollevato con una sola mano senza il rishio di arrecargli danni).

Non ci sono più bigattini incollati da gettare in acqua, e senza benzina finiscono anche i cavedani. L’undicesimo e ultimo pesce della giornata aveva dimostrato di essere qualcosa di diverso sin dai primi colpi di coda: Mauro, come molti altri pescatori, non apprezza questa specie alloctona poco combattiva che viene dall’Europa continentale.

Una volta allamate tendono a difendersi sfruttando il proprio peso e la forza della corrente, non un grande avversario quindi. Da queste parti vengono soprannominate ‘padelle’.

Ormai ci sono e si pescano pure loro, anche se non con la stessa soddisfazione dei pescatori nordeuropei. E allora dedichiamo un primo piano anche a questa breme.

Mauro usually starts the fishing session with the hook that touch on the bottom because fish are less suspicious, then he changes several times the float’s position on the line, up to fully support the leader on the bottom when the fishing gets tough. Avoid an exasperated retention is the first commandment: we’re not fishing carp and crucian. The line must be allowed to flow, slowing it down only for a few seconds; stop and go induce the bait lifting and will come back down to the bottom after release. Many attacks occur in this phase, when the fish sees the bait back down on his nose. Remember one thing: the chub are never too far away from where sticky maggots are, so this makes a nonsense to open the reel bail to extend the action over a certain limit.

Mauro di solito parte con un terminale a sfiorare il fondo perché all’inizio i pesci sono meno sospettosi, per poi variare in corsa l’altezza del segnalatore; durante la stessa battuta può arrivare a modificare più volte la sua posizione sulla lenza, fino ad appoggiare completamente il terminale quando la pesca si fa difficile. Evitare una trattenuta esasperata è il primo comandamento: non stiamo pescando carpe e carassi. La lenza va lasciata scorrere, rallentandola solo per brevi istanti; lo stop and go provoca il sollevamento dell’esca, che tornerà a scendere verso il fondo dopo il rilascio. Molti attacchi avvengono proprio in questa fase, quando il pesce vede l’esca tornare a scendergli sul naso. Ricordatevi una cosa: i cavedani non sono mai troppo lontani dal punto in cui si trovano i bigattini incollati, per questo poco senso aprire l’archetto del mulinello per prolungare la passata oltre un certo limite.

Photographing own catches is not simple as it may appear. Se pensate che una ripresa come questa sia ben fatta, allora state pensando male. I pesci sono posizionati casualmente e l’acqua intorbidita dai sedimenti fa declassare un fiume come il Sile a canalaccio di bassa pianura. In questa foto tutto è sbagliato.

The flat surface of a platform, like the bank, is ideal to position the fish. But we must be careful to put the keepnet under the landing net head, avoiding direct contact beetwen animals and metal, or other surfaces that can hurt them. Also because they are strong and uncooperative.

La superficie piana di una pedana, al pari della sponda, è ideale per posizionare i pesci. Bisogna però avere l’accortezza di posizionarci sotto la nassa raccolta a fisarmonica, evitando agli animali il contatto diretto con il metallo o altre superfici in grado di ferirli. Anche perché sono animali forti e a collaborare non ci pensano proprio.

Let them vent for a few seconds: they feel preyed and is normal for them squirm in a desperate attempt to regain their freedom.

Lasciateli sfogare per qualche secondo: si sentono predati e per loro è normale dimenarsi nel disperato tentativo di riguadagnare la libertà.

Once calm, wet your hands and put the best ones towards the camera lens. Heal the focus and hurry to shoot, because the right moment lasts only a few seconds. This is the result you have to obtain, and I would say it has a completely different appeal than the first picture.

Curate la messa a fuoco e sbrigatevi a scattare, perché il momento giusto dura solo pochi secondi. Questo è il risultato a cui dovete giungere, e direi che ha tutto un altro appeal rispetto alla prima foto.

Non c’è una scaglia fuori posto, sono perfetti come quando li abbiamo catturati. Un’ottima pescata, ora però è tempo di tornare a casa.

Ricordo perfettamente le ultime parole con cui ho concluso il mio precedente articolo, ma la vita è fatta di scelte e le scelte impongono rinunce. Dato che il tempo è un fattore limitante, direi di concentrarci subito sul campo di gara che l’8 e 9 giugno ospiterà il prossimo mondiale per club di pesca al colpo che si disputerà circa 50 chilometri a nord di Venezia. La foto che vedete l’ho scattata lasciandomi il canale Brian alle spalle e puntando la reflex in direzione della Gran Bretagna: quelle che vedete sono le Alpi Veneto-Friulane ricoperte da neve nella loro estremità superiore. Il clima molto piovoso e freddo che fino a oggi ha caratterizzato il nord della penisola italica è un fattore che sta influendo sul comportamento dei pesci, rendendoli apatici e poco avvezzi all’abboccata. L’acqua ristagnante sui campi agricoli e le temperature notturne inferiori ai 10 gradi Celsius potrebbero essere un ricordo tra due settimane durante il weekend del mondiale, oppure no…

It seems that someone has worked hard to compete with climate and make it less monotonous the course of this world championship. The images you can see on the official site are misleading in the sense that they are overtaken by events: those are not more the banks on which will be held the match and the official trainings, but in their place there is now what you’re seeing in these pictures. Even now the bulldozers are at work, two weeks before the event. I’m not an engineer and have to be cautious when we begin to value the others work, but knowing the way things are done in the sad thing called Italy, I strongly suspect that the reinforcement actions, if they were really necessary, could be carried out in a less devastating way and especially at the right time. I wonder how would occur today the Brian a few days befor the event, if it would be an English canal.

Sembra che qualcuno si sia impegnato molto per far concorrenza al clima e rendere meno monotono lo svolgimento di questo mondiale. Le immagini che potete vedere sul documento ufficiale presente a questo indirizzo sono fuorvianti, nel senso che sono superate dagli eventi: quelle non sono più le sponde su cui si svolgeranno le due gare e le relative prove, mentre al loro posto oggi c’è ciò che state vedendo in queste immagini. Ancora adesso le ruspe sono all’opera, a due settimane dall’evento. Non sono un ingegnere e bisogna essere cauti quando ci si mette a valutare la fatica altrui ma, conoscendo il modo in cui si fanno le cose nella triste cosa chiamata Italia, ho il forte sospetto che i lavori di rinforzo, ammesso che fossero davvero necessari, potevano essere svolti in modo meno impattante e sopratutto nei tempi giusti. The first thing you need to keep in mind when hear talk about of public works on the Italian territory, is that these are primarily functional in search of electoral support.

Ci sarebbero molte cose da dire su certi sorrisi fasulli che si vedono in giro, ma a volte è meglio chiudere entrambi gli occhi e voltarsi dall’altra parte; in Veneto-Friuli si chiama cheto vivere. La cosa che forse non tutti sanno è che non vi è alcuna differenza tra i personaggi che operano a livello nazionale e quelli locali, o tra gli appartenenti ai diversi partiti. Certo, qualcuno riesce a salvarsi dalla mediocrità generale, anche se il loro numero è così esiguo da essere inferiore a quello delle mosche in un paese di stitici. Non si tratta di populismo spiccio, ma di qualcosa di peggio: è tragico, obbiettivo realismo che nessuno può contraddire (provate a leggere le notizie presenti sulle pagine di un qualsiasi quotidiano). La prima cosa che dovete tenere a mente quando sentite parlare di opere pubbliche sul territorio italico, è che queste sono prima di tutto funzionali alla ricerca del consenso elettorale.

In Giappone uno dei tre fiumi a essersi salvato è il Nagara, protetto da editti governativi per un motivo ben preciso: dalle sue acque provengono gli ayu destinati alla tavola dell’imperatore, che di certo non potevano permettersi di puzzare di cemento. Mi viene da pensare che se il canale Brian avesse fornito i carassi per la mensa degli esausti presidenti della repubblica italiana, non avrebbe subito certi maltrattamenti.

Ok, it’s not the case of this canal: there’s not concrete on his banks and the grass will grow again, but other Italic streams haven’t been so lucky. Anyway you will not even possible to capture the pumpkinseed among the numerous bank plants (that now there’re no more). This sign indicates a prohibition of fishing for biological recovery that willlast until the running of the event. The aim is to protect the fish from stress factors due to the high number of events that taking place in this canal, too bad to deserve protection from certain enlightened minds was the canal itself. As you can see from the second picture, they seem to have eaten at least a good meter of bank; the plants that protrude from the water indicate the point where extended the original bank. The rest is clay mud that sticks like glue everywhere. On second thought it may not be a disadvantage: if you use modeling clay to prepare the fuillis, well now that I no longer need to bring it from home.

Ok, non è il caso di questo canale: non hanno posato cemento sulle sue sponde e l’erba ricrescerà, ma altri corsi d’acqua non sono stati così fortunati. Tra l’altro non sarà nemmeno più possibile catturare i persici sole, numerosissimi tra le piante del sottoriva (che non ci sono più).Questo cartello indica un divieto di pesca per riposo biologico che durerà fino allo svolgimento del mondiale. Lo scopo è di tutelare il pesce da fattori di stress dovuti all’alto numero di gare che si svolgono, peccato che a meritare tutela da certe menti illuminate fosse il canale stesso. Come si può vedere dalla seconda foto, sembra che si siano mangiati almeno un metro abbondante di sponda; le piante che fuoriesco dall’acqua indicano il punto in cui arrivava la sponda originale. Il resto è fango argilloso che si appiccica ovunque come colla. A pensarci bene potrebbe non essere uno svantaggio: se usate il pongo per preparare il fuillis, beh ora non serve più che ve lo portiate da casa.

The two photos were taken from the same point and the subject is the area called “alla pioppa” (at the poplar), but on two different dates: May 3, 2009 (the one above), May 26, 2013 (the one below). The works for bank consolidation were considered urgent and improvement, as well as absolutely necessary for the performance of the next world cup; the magnificent trees that you see in the first picture had already been eliminated in recent years. Il lavori di consolidamento della sponda sono stati considerati urgenti e migliorativi, oltre che assolutamente necessari per lo svolgimento del prossimo mondiale per club; i magnifici alberi che vedete nella prima foto erano già stati eliminati da qualche anno. Servono commenti? Se siete garisti che dovranno partecipare alla manifestazione, allora vi conviene prepararvi due preghiere: la prima servirà per non finire nei settori dove hanno operato le ruspe e, se non dovesse funzionare, usate la seconda affinché non abbia a piovere in quei giorni.

Seeing this photo it’s tempting to think of a intact rural environment and of a beautiful countryside. If you really are thinking so, then stop because it’s not: the northeastern regions of Veneto and Friuli, like much of the peninsula, are affected by a very strong concreting favored by a political culture that doesn’t think in terms of restructuring and reconstruction of the areas urban, but to the savage edification of the agricultural land. Vedendo questa foto si è tentati a pensare ad un ambiente rurale integro e ad una campagna meravigliosa. Se veramente lo state pensando, allora fermatevi perché non è così: le regioni nordorientali del Veneto e del Friuli, come gran parte della penisola, sono affette da una fortissima cementificazione del territorio favorita da una cultura politica portata non alla ristrutturazione a alla ricostruzione delle zone urbane, ma all’edificazione selvaggia a danno dei terreni agricoli. Il consumo di territorio in atto è drammatico e ve ne renderete conto percorrendo le strade di queste regioni: vedendo le gru all’opera nei cantieri, ricordatevi che tre volte su quattro si tratta di speculazione edilizia fine a se stessa e che quello che stanno costruendo, talvolta di qualità scadente, non ha alcuna reale utilità tanto più in un periodo storico come quello attuale; qui al nordest si registra il record di chiusure e di fallimenti. E allora perché lo fanno? Sembra difficile a credersi, ma gli amministratori locali incassano denaro per il solo fatto di permettere la costruzione di immobili sul loro territorio, a prescindere dalla reale utilità. Questo frutto della genialità italiota ha pure un nome: si chiamano oneri di urbanizzazione, e potete ben capire che più concessioni vengono firmate e più soldi entrano nelle casse delle amministrazioni comunali. This is an emblematic image about the fishing style in the canal Brian: the French pole makes it well but in 90 percent of cases the sectors will be won with the match rod, so never forget to treat the long-baiting even when fishing short. The other side is covered with a thick reeds which give the certainty of rudds presence; there are nevertheless some places without the opposite reeds. The local matchanglers call them “wailing walls” and if you will have the misfortune to finish in the wrong sectors, you’ll understand the reason of the name.

Questa è un’immagine emblematica dello stile di pesca nel canale Brian: la roubaisienne rende bene ma nel 90 per cento dei casi i settori verranno vinti con la match rod, pertanto mai dimenticare di curare la pasturazione lunga anche quando si sta pescando corti. La sponda opposta è ricoperta di un folto canneto che da la certezza della presenza delle scardole; ci sono tuttavia alcuni tratti privi del canneto opposto. I garisti locali li chiamano “muri del pianto”, e se avrete la sfortuna di capitare in quei picchetti capirete perché.

A very important thing: always in the canal Brian, like many other Italic waters, baiting is realized using light-colored, medium-large grain and sweet taste groundbaits, which are the typical Italic ones for crucians and carps. Seriously, you have to know that the use of bloodworms and fuillis is strictly prohibited in matches of the lower league and the canal Brian knows them only during the dispute of the Super Eccellenza (once a year), the competition that allows the qualification to the final Italic championship which takes place in the fall; a situation at the opposit of what happens in the rest of Europe. Anyway don’t worry: at the world championship many strange prohibitions will be suspended and you’ll be free to use the bait you prefer.

Una cosa importantissima: da sempre nel canale Brian, come il molte altre acque italiche, la pasturazione avviene usando sfarinati di colore chiaro, grana medio-grossa e dal sapore dolce, che sono poi le tipiche pasture italiche per carassi e carpe. Se chiedete a un garista locale qualche informazione sul modo di usare le terre, quasi sicuramente lui vi spiegherà il modo in cui vanga il suo orticello e di quanto bene crescano le patate, i fagioli e le zucche su una terra lavorata come si deve. Scherzi a parte, dovete sapere che l’uso del ver de vase e dei fuillis è severamente vietato nelle gare dei campionati inferiori e il Brian lo conosce solo in occasione della disputa della gara di Super Eccellenza, il torneo che permette la qualifica alla finale del campionato italico che si svolge in autunno (cioè una volta l’anno); una situazione agli antipodi rispetto a ciò che avviene nel resto d’Europa. Ad ogni modo non preoccupatevi: in occasione del mondiale molti strani divieti verranno sospesi e sarete liberi di usare le esche che vorrete.

An alternative to baits inserted directly into the groundbait container: with the thumb practice a cavity in the flour and insert some larvae at its center.

Un’alternativa alle esche inserite direttamente nel contenitore della pastura: con il pollice si pratica una cavità nello sfarinato e vi si inseriscono alcune larve al suo centro.

Fishing with the long pole accuracy is important, but here on Brian there are some variables to keep in mind and that affect to the speed current: the flow of the tides (one meter at maximum) and the presence of a barrier near the mouth of the canal. I will return to this topic, but immediately remember that current conditions can vary greatly within the same fishing session, with water coming down fast, goes up slow, or be completely still. As you can see this is a venue with many faces, and get to see that one of mullets could be decisive for the classification of some sectors. Remember that under the tip you have five meters water.

Pescando con la roubaisienne la precisione è importante, ma qui sul Brian vi sono alcune variabili da tenere bene a mente e che incidono sulla velocità della corrente: il flusso delle maree e la presenza di un’opera di sbarramento in prossimità della foce del canale. Ritorneremo su questo argomento, ma subito ricordatevi che le condizioni di corrente potranno variare molto nell’arco di una stessa sessione di pesca, con un’acqua che scende veloce, risale lenta, o completamente ferma. Come vedete questo è un canale con molte facce, e riuscire a vedere quella dei cefali potrebbe essere decisivo per la classifica di qualche settore. Ricordatevi che sotto la punta della canna avete cinque metri d’acqua.

Distance between rod tip and float depends on several factors, primarily by the strength of the current. Today served three grams of ballast, sometimes six, sometimes less than one gram. The only rule to follow is that… there are no rules. This is a canal where the best always win.

La distanza tra punta della canna e galleggiante dipende da vari fattori, in primis la forza della corrente. Oggi servivano tre grammi di zavorra, altre volte sei, altre volte meno di un grammo. L’unica regola da seguire è che… non esistono regole. Questo è un canale dove i migliori vincono sempre.

Dead maggots. The fish eat them willingly and are essential when you want a groundbait that worksbreaking down slowly.

Bigattini morti. I pesci li mangiano volentieri e sono indispensabile quando si desidera una pastura che lavori disgregandosi lentamente.

The white ones are the most classic bait in Brian. The local anglers use more these ones or earthworms.

  Quelli bianchi sono l’esca più classica usata nel Brian. I pescatori locali usano maggiormente questi o i lombrichi.

These are two typical hook bait. The hook is a Tubertini serie 18 number 18, but are also fine Gamakatsu as the 410B, the LS 610F or the very classic 6315B. You will absolutely have procure baits of red color, both in the normal size than rapalini (pinkies). The red color seems to remember bloodworms.

Questi sono due inneschi tipici. L’amo utilizzato è un Tubertini serie 18 numero 18, ma possono andare bene anche ami come i Gamakatsu 410B, l’LS 610F oppure il classicissimo 6315B. Dovrete assolutamente procurarvi esche di colore rosso, sia nella taglia normale che i rapalini (pinkies). Il colore rosso sembra ricordare ai pesci quello del ver de vase e non potrete farne a meno.

This is another bait you must have: earthworm manure. They are not easily found and the ones you see are from a ripe old compost heap whose humus seems to confer they excellent olfactory properties. Where all other baits fail, the earthworm manure resolves.

Questa è un’altra esca che dovrete avere: lombrichi di concimaia. Non si trovano facilmente e quelli che vedete provengono da una vecchia concimaia matura il cui humus sembra conferirgli proprietà olfattive eccellenti. Dove tutte le altre esche falliscono, il lombrico di concimaia risolve.

The hook bait for the pole fishing is with two earthworms at half body. Don’t think it would be a too big solution: even little brémes appreciate it.

L’innesco per la pesca a roubaisienne avviene appuntandone due a metà corpo. Non pensate che possa essere una soluzione troppo voluminosa: anche le piccole brémes sanno apprezzarlo.

This gentleman is Mauro Lanzarini and is one of the best matchanglers in Veneto-Friuli; he deserves the thanks for this short test. The venue over which we have made the photoshoot is not included between the dewatering of Staffolo and the location of Boccafossa, which will host the world cup for clubs, but downstream of the Boccafossa bridge. The Brian is a very regular canal and the characteristics are identical.

Questo signore è Mauro Lanzarini ed è uno dei migliori pescatori veneto-friulani; a lui va il ringraziamento per questa breve prova. Il tratto su cui abbiamo realizzato il servizio fotografico non è quello incluso tra l’idrovora di Staffolo e la località di Boccafossa, dove si svolgerà il mondiale per club, ma quello a valle del ponte di Boccafossa. Il Brian è un canale molto regolare e le caratteristiche sono identiche.

The elastic to insert into the pole and its tension are a good question mark: it will depend on the strength of the current, the fishing style, the fish under the rod. One millimeter can be a good general solution, also because a two pounds crucian, a nice carp or a big mullet… you’ll never put them into your keepnet with a 0.08 endline.

Il diametro dell’elastico da inserire nella roubaisienne e la sua tensione rappresentano un bel punto di domanda: dipenderanno dalla forza della corrente, dallo stile di pesca, dai pesci che si raduneranno sotto la canna. Un millimetro può rappresentare una buona soluzione generale, anche perché il carassio da chilo, una bella carpa o un grosso cefalo non si metteranno in nassa con finali dello 0.08.

As you can see from these pictures all baits are well appreciated. The Italian bréam are accustomed to maggots and earthworms, and the Mauro’s advice for you is: not to fall in love with a single bait, even when it calls bloodworm.

Come vedete da queste foto tutte le esche sono ben apprezzate. Le bréme italiane sono abituate ai bigattini e ai lombrichi, e il consiglio che Mauro si sente di dare è di non innamorarsi di un’unica esca, nemmeno quando si chiama ver de vase.

Another guest in this canal that comes directly from the sea. If things go wrong with the normal freshwater fish, you have to try to catch someone. Often with the mullets you can remedy to a compromised situation.

Un altro ospite presente nelle acque di questo canale e che risale direttamente dal mare. Se le cose dovessero andar male con i normali pesci d’acqua dolce, dovrete provare a catturarne qualcuno. Spesso con i cefali si può rimediare a una situazione compromessa.

Rather than choose a type of hook than another, is more important the integrity of the final: don’t ever go down 0.10 mm because you risk losing the best fish. In the peninsula bréams and roaches are suffering identity crisis and have learned to behave as crucians and carps.

  Più che scegliere un tipo di amo rispetto all’altro, conta di più l’integrità del finale: non scendete mai sotto lo 0,10 millimetri poiché rischierete di perdere i pesci migliori. Nella penisola le bréme e i gardon soffrono di crisi di identità e hanno imparato a comportarsi come carassi e carpe.

Even if you are focused on the French pole and cannot be bothered to use the English one, don’t forget baiting the other side: to give fish to the next opponent is the worst way to angling durint the match.

Anche se siete concentrati sulla canna francese e non ve la sentite di usare quelle inglesi, non scordatevi mai di pasturare la sponda opposta: regalare i propri pesci all’avversario di fianco è il peggior modo di condurre la gara.

A small roach, which together with the bréam has begun in recent years to colonize this canal. Unfortunately some idiot has also entered wels catfish and walleyes, so be prepared for some surprises. There are fewer tench and the beautiful triotto is in sharp rarefactio (little fish native to this part of Europe).

  Un piccolo gardon, che assieme alla bréme ha iniziato in anni recenti a colonizzare questo canale. Purtroppo qualche imbecille vi ha immesso anche siluri e lucciperca, quindi preparatevi a qualche sorpresa. Sono sparite le tinche ed è in netta rarefazione il meraviglioso triotto, piccolo pesce autoctono di questo angolo d’Europa.

The photoshoot day (May 26) I had forgotten to take some pictures to the floats; it happens. Then a few days later I called Mauro to meet him at his home in the City of Eraclea, which is a ten minute drive from Brian in the direction of Venice. Let it be understood that there is no City of Eraclea, but a country village where all the inhabitants have very humble peasant origins, including I who live there since I was born. Why then the inscription on road signs speak about of City of Eraclea, with the sole purpose of making people laugh around the world? Italiot politicians is the sad answer, as always.

Allora qualche giorno dopo ho telefonato a Mauro per incontrarlo a casa sua, nella Città di Eraclea che sorge a dieci minuti d’auto dal Brian in direzione di Venezia. Sia ben inteso che non esiste alcuna Città di Eraclea, bensì un paesino di campagna dove tutti gli abitanti hanno umilissime origini contadine, compreso io che ci abito da quando sono nato. Perché allora sui cartelli stradali trovate la scritta Città di Eraclea, allo solo scopo di far ridere il mondo intero? Politicanti italioti: ecco la triste risposta.

If the current is strong and under the rod tip there are fish as carps and crucians who want a bait glued on the bottom, then there’s no better solution than a plate float. The ones you see are of a very particular type: manufactured by a Italic company, are also excellent for fishing in the classic system. My friend Thomas Busatto normally use them when fishing big chubs in the fast waters of the Naviglio Brenta, a canal less than two meters deep linking (the city of) Padua to Venice lagoon.

Se la corrente è forte e sotto la punta della canna avete pesci come carpe e carassi che vogliono un’esca incollata sul fondo, allora non c’è soluzione migliore di un galleggiante piatto. Quelli che vedete sono di un tipo molto particolare: prodotti da un’azienda italica, sono ottimi anche per pescare in passata classica. Il mio amico Thomas Busatto li usa normalmente con i grossi cavedani nelle veloci acque del Naviglio Brenta, un canale profondo meno di due metri che unisce Padova alla laguna veneta.

Mauro has instead used a classic drop shaped float by three grams, the bicolor in the photo. No torpille: just a bulk with a dozen shots at one meter the hook, plus a climb of other dots that spread gradually downwards. An alternative is to close in pairs the shots below the bulk. However much depends on the strength of the current and your experience in fast water fishing. Or a in complete still…

Mauro ha invece usato un modello classico a forma di goccia da tre grammi, quello bicolore presente nella foto. Niente torpille: solo un bulk costitiuto da una decina di pallini a un metro dall’amo, più una scalata di altri pallini che si allargano man mano verso il basso. Un’alternativa è quella di chiudere a coppie i pallini sotto il bulk. Ad ogni modo molto dipende dalla forza della corrente e dalla vostra esperienza nella pesca in acque veloci. O completamente ferme…

The perfect float adjustmen is something to be taken for granted, as is obvious the overadjustmen when fishing in fast water. When water fast flowing a solution is a final line who works completely resting on the bottom; thirty centimeters of 0.10 or 0.12 are an ideal fit. Unlike all the Italic matchanglers who don’t read anything about sportfishing, Mauro has a good number of old amazing magazines (Damme 1988, Belgium, one of the best English teams ever).

La perfetta taratura del galleggiante è qualcosa che va dato per scontato, così come è scontata la sovrataratura nella pesca in acque veloci. Quando l’acqua scorre veloce una soluzione è quella di far lavorare il finale completamente appoggiato sul fondo; trenta centimetri dello 0,10 o dello 0,12 sono una misura ideale. A differenza della quasi totalità dei garisti italici che non leggono nulla di pesca sportiva, Mauro è anche un appassionato di storia del nostro sport e ha un buon numero di vecchie riviste (Damme 1988, Belgio, una delle migliori squadre inglesi di sempre).

This is the best system to confront the Brian: if you don’t know English style then you have no hope. With Mauro I had decided to set up the day with French technique and the two matchrods you see were unlined just to show them. My intention is to propose an article exclusively dedicated to this style, even if you probably will have to content only for this. Too bad because there would be many interesting things to say, starting with the use of special baits like the Galleria mellonella larva, the Chilecomadia moorei larva and the orsetto (a big maggot). Anyway you’ll need powerful rods that can launch 30 grams wagglers in minimum length of 14′, and of coruse with adequate reels. The most common are the Shimano Aero GTM in size 4000 with a speed ratio of 6.2:1.

Questo è il miglio sistema di pesca per affrontare il Brian: se non sapete pescare bene all’inglese allora non avete speranze. Con Mauro avevo deciso di impostare la pescata con la tecnica francese e le due canne che vedete sono state sfoderate per onore di cronaca. L’intenzione sarebbe quella di realizzare un servizio dedicato esclusivamente a questo stile, anche se probabilmente non ce la farò Servono canne potenti in grado di lanciare waggler da 30 grammi lunghe non meno di 14′ a cui affiancare mulinelli adeguati. I più usati sono gli Shimano Aero GTM nella taglia 4000 con un ratio di 6.2:1.

In the longdistance fishing chopped earthworms make good when included in the groundbait ball as you can see in the second picture. For the many oddities that plague this strange country, you should know that in normal matches the use of chopped earthworms is prohibited by regulations.

Nella pesca a lunga distanza rendono bene i lombrichi a pezzi da inserire nella pallina di pastura come vedete nella seconda foto. Per le mille stranezze che affliggono strano paese, dovete sapere che nelle gare normali l’uso dei lombrichi tagliati è vietato dai regolamenti.

There are two fishing lines with English rod: attached to the opposite side with 1-1,5 meter deep in search of big rudds stationed in the reeds, or eight meters apart where the depth is much greater. For fishing lines away from the reeds the lines can be made in two ways: with fixed 18-30 grams wagglers (depends on the wind) or with sliding 25-30+ grams wagglers (depends on the current speed).

Ci sono due linee di pesca con la canna inglese: a ridosso della sponda opposta con un metro-un metro di mezzo di profondità alla ricerca delle grosse scardole che stazionano nel canneto, oppure a otto metri di distanza dove il fondale è molto più sostenuto. Per la pesca lontano dal canneto le lenze possono essere costriuite in due modi: con waggler fisso da 18-30 grammi (dipende dal vento) o con quello scorrevole da 25-30 grammi o più (dipende dalla velocità della corrente).

The recommended hook baitfor the earthworm: it holds up well the launch stress. A variant is the chop of the tail one centimetre after the hook.

L’innesco consigliato per il lombrico: regge bene lo stress del lancio. Una variante altrettanto efficace prevede il talgio della coda a un centimetro dall’amo.

A perfectly cleaned and degreased wire is important to make easy the sinking. Un filo perfettamente pulito e sgrassato è importante per facilitare l’affondamento.

Although it’s impossible to feed the fish at forty meters with the same precision than to eleven, you have to know that the Brian certain mistakes are not forgiven…

Anche se è impossibile pasturare a quaranta metri con la stessa precisione che a undici, sappiate che sul Brian certi errori non vengono perdonati…

Sembra un grosso pesce. Sembra…

If you are a matchangler who should angling during the next world championship, then don’t smile: when you’ll have tried everything and have arrived at the conclusion that to save the result and honor you absolutely have to dig out some big rudd from the opposite reed, in the first place be careful not to bait the fish too long, especially with sticky maggots. The result is that it will not come out more from plants. Secondly you have to take big risks, which become huge whereas in some places the reeds tend to throw forward into the water. No mercy, no prisoniers says someone in 300, and the same seems to think that reeds. To prevent damage keep a good gap between the main line on the spool and the one who binds the hook: for example a direct 0.18 mm line and a final one of 0.10-0.12 mm. Otherwise at the end of the match you’ll see a common scene here on the Brian: a man on a little boat who harvest the waggler attached on the opposite bank. To the made mistake, I asked Mauro to pose with the bent rod for some effect pictures.

Se siete garisti che dovranno pescare nel mondiale, allora è meglio che non ridiate: se le avete provate tutte e siete arrivati alla conclusione che per salvare risultato e onore dovete assolutamente stanare qualche grossa scardola dal canneto opposto, in primo luogo state attenti a non pasturare troppo lunghi, sopratutto con i bigattini incollati. Il risultato è che non usciranno più dalle piante. In secondo luogo dovrete prendere dei grossi rischi, che diventano immensi considerando che in certi punti le canne tendono o gettarsi in avanti verso l’acqua. Per evitare danni mantenete un buon divario tra la lenza madre e il filo che lega l’amo: imbobinate nel mulinello un filo diretto dello 0.18 e usate un finale dello 0,10-0,12 millimetri. In caso contrario a fine gara assisterete a uno spettacolo consueto qui sul Brian: vedrete passare un tizio su una piccola barca intento a raccogliere i galleggianti rimati attaccati al canneto. A errore compiuto ho chiesto a Mauro di posare con la canna piegata per qualche foto d’effetto.

The result of a few hours of fishing: almost all crucians and bréams of medium-small size. Keep in mind that canal Brian is able to offer a lot more, especially as size, and that it’s not worth risking using too thin lines and too little hooks.

Il risultato di qualche ora di pesca: quasi tutti carassi e bréme di taglia medio-piccola. Tenete presente che il Brian sa offrire molto di più, sopratutto come taglia, e che non vale la pena rischiare usando lenze troppo sottili e ami troppo piccoli.

In any case, I doubt that in the event of severe weather will be used this part of the canal: it is more logical, sensible and above all human that the event leaders recourse to upstream stretch towards the village of Boccafossa, saved from the bulldozers, or the one immediately downstream of the bridge where we took the photos for the article. Vi consiglio anche di andare a leggervi l’articolo dal quale ho ricavato questa immagine che, fatta eccezione per l’header del sito ritraente un persico sole, è stata la prima foto in assoluto pubblicata su RedAngler. A ogni modo dubito che in caso di forte maltempo verrà utilizzato questo tratto di canale: è più logico, sensato e sopratutto umano che chi di dovere ricorra al tratto più a monte verso l’abitato di Boccafossa, risparmiato dalle ruspe, o quello subito a valle del ponte dove abbiamo scattato le foto per l’articolo.
