È stato l’unico vero professionista dell’immagine visto durante l’intera giornata di gara: che tristezza! Bucintoro, questo potete leggere sulla sua maglietta, oggi solo il nome di un circolo di canotaggio. Ma Bucintoro è stato molto di più, un nome ancora rimpianto da molti veri veneziani: antico simbolo della Serenissima venne incendiato per ordine di un individuo definito nella sceneggiatura di un film come “quel maiale francese”.

I regret this also because day two was richer in catches than day one. Congratulations to the world champions of the Serb team Senta Maros: Zsolt Palfi, Milan Selkulic, Zsolt Beviz, Arnold Santo and Zoran Dugajlic.

Sergii Burdak e Rui Coimbra seguono con lo sguardo le restanti operazioni di pesatura nella zona D, ma stanno anche discutendo di un’altra cosa: ciò che tengono in mano sono le aste dei rispettivi ombrelloni. Quello di Rui, in lega leggera, non ha resistito alle sollecitazioni del vento, mentre l’asta di Sergii non ha avuto problemi. Il motivo? Sia chimico che fisico. Quello del portoghese era semplice metallo e molto sottile, l’altro era di titanio e di sezione molto spessa con solo un piccolo foro centrale. Sergii ha provato a piegarlo con decisione facendo leva sul ginocchio, ma è rimasto perfettamente dritto. Non so che vento spiri in Ucraina, ma dubito che una simile soluzione possa essere economicamente competitiva.

The current speed is the first and most important parameter to consider when planning a strategy. In the canal Brian, that runs next to the sea, the current is variable and reflects the tides movement when the doors of this barrier are left open.

La velocità della corrente è il primo e più importante parametro da considerare nel momento in cui si pianifica una strategia. Sul Brian, canale che scorre nelle vicinanze della costa, le correnti sono variabili e rispecchiano l’andamento delle maree quando le porte di questa opera di sbarramento sono lasciate aperte.

In the two competition days the tide was sharply rising with its peak around noon (in the Mediterranean Sea there’s a maximum difference of one meter), and it means that the water had to move from downstream to upstream. So it wasn’t: evidently the bulkheads were closed, and not left open like you see in this picture.

Nei due giorni di gara la marea era nettamente crescente con il suo picco verso mezzogiorno (nel Mediterraneo vi è un dislivello massimo di un metro); ciò significa che l’acqua doveva muoversi da valle verso monte. Così non è stato: evidentemente le paratie erano chiuse, e non aperte come si può vedere in questa foto.

The car park for anglers and spectators was an uncultivatedagricultural field near to the canal. Luckily for the organizers, the unstable weather of those days has spared the tounament, putting to rain just during the prize ceremony as you can see from these open umbrellas; but if it had started to rain a few hours before… End of the biological rest period, at least that seems the message of these signs piled up in the parking area.

Il parcheggio per gli agonisti e gli spettatori era stato ricavato da un campo agricolo incolto a ridosso del canale. Per fortuna degli organizzatori il tempo instabile di quei giorni ha risparmiato la gara, sfogandosi solo durante la premiazione come potete vedere da questi ombrelli aperti; ma se avesse iniziato a piovere qualche ora prima… Fine del periodo di riposo biologico, almeno sembra questo il messaggio di questi cartelli accatastati nel parcheggio.

Primo giorno di gara, sabato 8 giugno: viale che conduce al campo gara. C’erano più bandiere che spettatori lungo la sponda. Davvero un peccato.

The photo in evidence of an item is special: a single shot with the strength to summarize a whole story, and personally I’m convinced that it should always be an original, unique image that no one else didn’t have the ability to grasp. Consider it as a habit by photographers. I wouldn’t use it if I hadn’t accidentally discovered the source: the mascot of the 2013 world championship for clubs is a drawing selected from a competition open to school children of San Dona di Piave, the town in which it took place the opening ceremony of the event. Really effective, congratulations to the girl who designed it.

La foto in evidenza di un articolo è speciale: un singolo scatto che deve avere la forza di riassumere un’intera storia, e personalmente sono convinto che debba sempre essere un soggetto originale, unico, che nessun altro ha avuto l’abilità di cogliere. Consideratelo pure un vezzo da fotografi. Usare un’immagine non mia è una forzatura che avrei evitato, se non ne avessi scoperto casualmente l’origine: la mascotte del campionato del mondo per clubs 2013 è un disegno selezionato da un concorso aperto ai ragazzini delle scuole di San Donà di Piave, il paese in cui si è svolta la cerimonia di apertura dell’evento. Davvero efficace: complimenti alla ragazzina che lo ha realizzato.

Finally on the competition field, organized in five zones with two sectors of 15 or 14 anglers each (29 clubs took part in this championship). Don’t be fooled by the smooth surface of the water: the wind will visit to match anglers causing some embarrassment.

Finalmente sul campo di gara, organizzato in cinque zone con due settori da 15 o 14 concorrenti ciascuna (a questo mondiale partecipavano 29 clubs). Non lasciatevi ingannare dalla superficie liscia dell’acqua: il vento farà spesso visita ai concorrenti provocando qualche imbarazzo.

After a night of hard work my attention span was quite low, as well as down was the look. Almost without realizing it, I came to this pole element with the logo Drennan, and Drennan and is notoriously sponsor of a certain type of match angler…

Dopo una notte di duro lavoro la mia soglia di attenzione era piuttosto bassa, così come basso era lo sguardo. Quasi senza accorgermene sono arrivato a questo elemento targato Drennan, e Drennan è notoriamente sponsor di un certo tipo di garista…

Steve Hemingray, the only representative of the team Kamasan Starlets I photographed. There were also a couple who called Dannen Cox and Sean Ashby, but tiredness nailed my legs and I decided to follow mainly a particular area, the upstream one nicknamed “at the poplar”.

Steve Hemingray, l’unico rappresentante del team Kamasan Starlets che ho fotografato quel giorno. Ce n’erano anche un paio che si chiamavano Dannen Cox e Sean Ashby, ma la stanchezza mi ha inchiodato le gambe e ho deciso di seguire solo una determinata zona del campo di gara, quella a monte soprannominata “alla pioppa”.

During the first competition day he was in zone E, sector A, located at the top of the competition field. I decided to observe the Italian during the last preparation stages and during the minutes dedicated to the initial heavy baiting operations. Note the dry clay layer: only a few weeks before here there was a grassy bank and a lush reed: the real, typical bank of the canal Brian.

Ho deciso di seguire l’italiano nelle ultime fasi della preparazione e nei minuti dedicati alla pasturazione iniziale. Da notare lo strato di argilla secca: solo poche settimane prima qui c’era una sponda erbosa e un canneto rigoglioso.

Packing of spheres to launch at the distance of 35 meters. The groundbait is sweet and yellow as normally used in Italy in bottom fishing for carps and crucians; it contains maggots, casters and fouillis.

This one instead, decidedly darker, will be put down under the roubaisienne tip.

Questa invece, decisamente più scura, è destinata a essere scodellata sotto la punta della roubaisienne.

The floats present on the Defendi’s tips: short form, steel stem, partially or totally black colored tip due to the sun reflections. The pattern on the long pole elements surface suggests that they are a Reglass production.

I galleggianti presenti sulle punte preparate da Defendi: forma raccolta, deriva in acciaio, antenne in parte o totalmente colorate di nero a causa del riflesso sull’acqua. Il disegno sulla superficie delle punte lascia intuire come esse siano di produzione Reglass.

Instead these are the lines prepared by the competitor alongside Mr Defendi: the tips are painted in black with the exception of a little section next to the body. They are all about two grams.

Queste invece sono le lenze preparate dal concorrente accanto all’italiano: anche queste hanno le antenne verniciate di nero a eccezione della sezione prossima al corpo. Sono tutte sui due grammi di portata.

Now the match rods: 16 ‘ (4.8 meters), tip action and a casting weight up to 30 grams to cover the forty meters distance that separate the other side. Little in common with traditional tackle born for this fishing style.

Passiamo alle canne per la pesca all’inglese: 16′ (4.8 metri), azione di punta e una potenza di lancio fino a 30 grammi per coprire i quaranta metri che separano dalla sponda opposta. Poco a che spartire con i tradizionali attrezzi nati per questo stile di pesca.

The particular waggler fixing system. A hybrid solution between the classic fixing system and the slider: it guarantees a smoother action in the little hinvitations, but above all it restricts the line shift. If the float was completely blocked, this would sink mostly in each minimum wire winding.

Il sistema di fissaggio dei wagglers. Una soluzione ibrida tra il classico sistema fisso e quello scorrevole: garantisce un’azione più fluida nei piccoli richiami necessari a invogliare il pesce all’abboccata, ma sopratutto limita lo spostamento della lenza. Se invece il galleggiante fosse completamente bloccato, questo affonderebbe maggiormente a ogni minimo avvolgimento di filo.

The solution adopted by Defendi for the slider: a single large lead ball to calibrate the waggler, but without the braid to stiffen the structure.

La soluzione adottata da Defendi per lo scorrevole: un’unica grossa sfera di piombo a tarare il segnalatore, senza però la treccia di filo a irrigidirne la struttura.

Non viene trascurata la zona davanti alla nassa: si utilizzano sia il cupping kit che lanci a mano.

And finally the launch of groundbait toward the opposite bank.

E infine il lancio di pastura verso la sponda opposta.

The groundbait was concentrated in the bottom about five meters from the opposite bank to point to carps and crucians. With a high water level, alternatively you can catch big rudds present close to or inside the reed using a line of one meter. You have to sling sticky maggots in a meter away, but be careful: wrong target with a baits that end up in the middle of the reeds means not taking anything.

La pastura andava concentrata sul fondo a cinque metri dalla sponda per puntare a carpe e carassi. Quando il livello dell’acqua è alto, in alternativa si può tentare la cattura delle grosse scardole presenti a ridosso o dentro il canneto usando una lenza da un metro. Bisogna fiondare bigattini incollati a un metro di distanza, ma attenzione: sbagliare mira con una pallina di esche che finisce in mezzo al canneto significa non prendere più nulla.

This is an interesting picture: the photographer you see is a pro, in the sense that earns his bread and pays the bills thanks to the images he creates with his equipment. And the photographic equipment worth a reflection: he’s using a Nikon D90 (amateur SLR of three generations ago) with the Nikkor 70-300 VR (amateur level lens, although the best in its price range together with the Sony 70-300). In other western countries, we would have seen him at work with a D4 or an EOS 1D serie, but not in Italy. Why? For two reasons: this is a country devoid of photographic culture and this intellectual poverty damage the profession, which doesn’t have any protection (as happens in Germany). Secondly, the taxation level is so exasperated that, paid all you have to pay, remain just the money for bread (when it goes well).

Questa è un’immagine interessante: il fotografo che vedete è un professionista, nel senso che si guadagna il pane e paga le bollette proprio grazie alle immagini che riesce a creare con la sua attrezzatura. E proprio la sua attrezzatura fotografica merita una breve riflessione: sta usando una Nikon D80 (reflex amatoriale di quattro generazioni fa) corredata dal Nikkor 70-300 VR (lente di livello amatoriale, pur se il migliore nella sua fascia di prezzo assieme al Sony 70-300). In altri paesi occidentali un professionista come questo lo avremmo visto all’opera con una D4 o una EOS serie 1D, ma non in Italia. Perché? Per due motivi: questo è un paese privo di cultura fotografica e la cosa si riflette sulla professione, che tra l’altro non gode di alcuna protezione come invece avviene in Germania. In secondo luogo il livello di tassazione è così esasperato che, pagate tutti i balzelli, restano appena i soldi per il pane. Quando va bene.

Iniziano le catture: una discreta bréme per lo sloveno Jernej Lipovnik, che con 3063 grammi si classificherà secondo nel suo settore.

A mirror carp just captured by Eugen Baltac, second in section A zone C with 4,117 grams. He will be beaten by Swedish Mattias Litzell with nearly five kilos. Fish of this size are not random: in the days before the tournament had been released a few tons of carps weighing between 200 grams and some kilos.

Una carpa a specchi appena catturata da Eugen Baltac, secondo nel settore A della zona C con 4117 grammi. Sarà battuto dallo svedese Mattias Litzell con quasi cinque chili. Pesci di questa taglia non sono casuali: nei giorni precedenti alla gara erano state immesse alcune tonnellate di carpe del peso compreso tra 200 grammi e qualche chilo.
