The title is misleading, I clarify it: this individual podium with Steve Hemingray, József Varga and Renè Stronk doesn’t belong to the World Championship for clubs which took place during the second weekend of June 2014 on the river Sava, central Slovenia, but belongs to the 2009 European Championship for nations. I wanted to be there last June to cover the event but work commitments not allowed to me, and no work no money… never as in this historical period (and above all in the very sad Italy) work is worth more than the God’s grace, and if you have the fortune of having one is better you keep it tight. However, it was strong the tentation of an article about that enchanted place that is the valley of the river Sava, and then here’s some shots retrieved thanks to Lightroom’s algorithms.

Il titolo è fuorviante, chiariamo subito la questione: questo podio individuale con Steve Hemingray, József Varga e Renè Stronk non appartiene al mondiale per club svoltosi lo scorso mese di giugno in Slovenia, bensì al campionato europeo del 2009. Avrei voluto esserci per coprire l’evento ma gli impegni di lavoro non me l’hanno consentito, a meno di non lavorare… il fatto è che mai come in questo periodo storico il lavoro nella triste Italia vale più della grazia di Dio, e chi ha la fortuna di averne uno è meglio che se lo tenga ben stretto. Tuttavia era forte l’idea di un articolo su quel luogo fatato che è la valle della Sava nella Slovenia centrale, e allora ecco riemergere alcuni scatti dagli algoritmi di Lightroom.

I was ready Sunday morning. I finished my work, had a shower, the car was loaded, but there was a problem: it was 9 o’clock. Unfortunately I finished very late (or early, it’s a point of view) and according to what you can read to the Google Map, it takes almost three hours and a half to reach the matchfield, when the competition started at 10 o’clock. Sometimes in life you have to silence the heart.

Domenica mattina ero pronto: avevo finito di lavorare da un’ora, mi ero fatto un doccia, l’auto era carica con ciò che serviva, ma c’era un problema. Erano le 9 in punto. Purtroppo avevo finito molto tardi (o molto presto, dipende dal punto di vista) e stando a ciò che potete leggere dalla Google Map ci vogliono tre ore e mezza per raggiungere il campo di gara, quando la seconda prova sarebbe iniziata alle 10 in punto. A volte nella vita bisogna saper zittire il cuore.

In 2009 I was still convinced about the superior quality of film slides over the digital technology, because it was still alive in my mind the horrific images of the 2003 Champions League final which took place at Old Trafford in Manchester. The glory of that day was mortified by the low quality of the images in newspapers: even if photos were realized by super expensive ‘pro’ cameras, in early 2000 years digital tecnology offered pitiful results in term of resolution, and then in sharpness. «If this is the best we can see by the digital technology, then the film will become immortal», I thought We were at the begin of mass diffusion of digital photography and photographic industry had to start somewhere, but it was a pity they decided to experiment with that historic Milan’s victory, which instead was worthy of all the slides’ quality. Curiously, in the late summer of that same 2003 was presented a reflex that would have created a new market segment: Canon chose the bank of the river Thames for the official launch of EOS 300D, an amateur camera that paradoxically offered much more than the super professional ones of that time; and the Japanese company did it with a price of only 1300 euro lens included (list price in the Italian market). It’s a historical product, the milestone that made the concept of digital SLR affordable for all budgets, a concept considered super-professional and super expensive (despite the poor performance). Today if you can buy a SLR with a sensor inside, you really have to thanks this model.

In quel lontano 2009 ero ancora convinto della superiorità qualitativa della pellicola sul digitale, tanto erano vive nei miei ricordi le orrende immagini relative alla finale di Champions Leage svoltasi sei anni prima all’Old Trafford di Manchester. La gloria di quel giorno venne mortificata dalla scadentissima qualità delle foto pubblicate sui quotidiani del periodo: il fatto è che per quanto costose e tecnologicamente avanzate per l’epoca, quelle macchine fotografiche digitali super professionali e super costose offrivano risultati pietosi in termini di risoluzione, e quindi di nitidezza. «Se questo è il meglio che sa offrire il digitale, allora la pellicola diventerà immortale», pensai. Erano gli arbori della fotografia digitale di massa e da qualche parte si doveva pur iniziare, peccato solo che avessero deciso di sperimentare su una storica vittoria del Milan meritevole invece di tutta la qualità della pellicola. Curiosamente, nella tarda estate di quello stesso 2003 venne presentata una reflex rivoluzionaria che avrebbe creato un nuovo segmento di mercato: Canon scelse le sponde del Tamigi per la presentazione ufficiale della EOS 300D, fotocamera amatoriale che paradossalmente offriva molto di più delle super professionali del momento, facendolo al costo, all’epoca sconvolgentemente basso, di soli 1300 euro obiettivo incluso (prezzo di listino sul mercato italiano). Si tratta di un prodotto storico poiché è la pietra miliare che rese alla portata di tutte le tasche il concetto di digital reflex fino a quel momento considerato superprofessionale (e super costoso nonostante le scarse performance). Se oggi potete permettervi l’acquisto di una reflex dotata di sensore, lo dovete proprio a questo modello.

Five years ago I took with me three cameras to Radece: my two faithful Pentax MZ-5N with a good supply of Fuji Sensia 100, plus a little purchase of which I wasn’t too convinced: a Canon EOS 300D. I took it used more for the depreciated price that characterizes all objects with a high electronic content, rather than motivated by real conviction: I thought it was an amatorial class reflex presented in the same year of the final disputed at Old Trafford… Well, as it was obvious to expect I realized the best shots of the day with my two Pentax (on the Fuji Sensia film slides), while I used the Canon to experiment (with little conviction). Today the slides are hard to find, missing in some remote place of my house, but it was enough to type the word ‘Radece’ on the keyboard to get back those shots in the time of a breath. These are shots of second or third choice for quality and cannot compete with the others taken with Pentax, fact is that things like these make you realize why the film is on the verge of extinction. The photos accompanying this article were all produced by the 6 mega pixels sensor of the 300D, obviously with the exception of the satellite ones.

Cinque anni fa a Radece portai con me tre macchine fotografiche: le mie fide Pentax MZ-5N accompagnate da una buona scorta di Fuji Sensia 100, più un acquisto di cui tuttavia non ero troppo convinto: una Canon EOS 300D. La presi usata qualche anno prima allettato più dal prezzo svalutato che caratterizza tutti gli oggetti a elevato tenore di elettronica, piuttosto che motivato da reale convinzione, anche perché si trattava di una reflex di classe consumer presentata proprio nello stesso anno della finale di Manchester… Beh, come era ovvio aspettarsi gli scatti migliori di quel giorno li realizzai con le Pentax, mentre la Canon fu usata per sperimentare. Fatto sta che oggi le diapositive sono introvabili, disperse in qualche angolo remoto della mia casa, mentre è bastato digitare la parola ‘RADECE’ sulla tastiera del mio computer per riavere in un istante quegli scatti. Sono immagini di seconda o terza scelta che per qualità non possono competere con quelli realizzati sulla pellicola, sta di fatto che situazioni come questa contribuiscono ad aver portato la pellicola sull’orlo dell’estinzione (le fotografie a corredo di questo articolo sono state tutte generate dal sensore da 6 mega pixel della 300D, ovviamente con l’eccezione delle satellitari).

I downloaded this image from the official document of the Fishing Assosation of Slovenia: it shows the sectors and the characteristics in depth of each one, which are the same of the 2009 event and of the last year’s Ladies’ World Championship. The Sava is a river and cannot have the regularity of a canal, of course: so, no surprise about differences in depth between the various sectors on distance of 13 meters from shore (2.5 meters in area ‘A’ to 7.5 meters of the ‘C’ and ‘D’).

Even in 2009 I finished my work in the morning, but long before than in last Juny and had enough time for my report. When I arrived at Radece, the second match had already started by an hour. I took this photo in front of the Fishing Club, downstream the sector ‘A’, and the first thing that strikes the eyes is the dominant green of landscape. Even the Veneto-Friuli enjoyed of such a blinding green, but now, thanks to the lobby of the concrete and to the corrupt political class, to be become dominant is the gray of reinforced concrete. To understand what I mean, try to take a look to the pictures of this my old article. Fortunately, in this sad case galleys began to receive the criminals, although between silk sheets and gold bars; but what is worse is that very soon they will return to their Pharaonic villas to enjoy the illegal wealth they accumulated in years of Italian jobs.

Anche in occasione dell’europeo per nazioni del 2009 terminai di lavorare la mattina presto, solo che all’epoca ci riuscii molto prima ed ebbi sufficiente tempo per il mio reportage; nel giungere a Radece la seconda prova era già iniziata da un’ora. Scattai questa foto davanti al Fishing Club, a valle del settore ‘A’, e la prima cosa che colpisce l’occhio è la dominante verde del paesaggio circostante. Anche il Veneto-Friuli godeva un tempo di un simile verde accecante, mentre oggi grazie alle lobby del cemento e a una classe politica corrotta fino al midollo, a essere diventato dominante è il grigiore del cemento armato. Per capire cosa intendo, provate a dare un’occhiata alle fotografie in questo mio vecchio articolo. Almeno in questo triste caso le galere hanno iniziato ad accogliere i responsabili, anche se tra sbarre d’oro e lenzuola di seta, e sopratutto tra non molto se ne torneranno nelle loro ville faraoniche a godere delle ricchezze accumulate illegalmente sulla pelle di una terra non loro.

In recent times, the name of river Sava was back under my eyes for a reason unrelated to sport fishing: Masterpiece. It is an unique television program, a talent show in which aspiring writers were called to promote – and defend – their own novels. Winner of the first edition was Nikola P. Savic, a Serbian who moved from his country to a small town west of Venice, and his strongly autobiographical novel speaks about his homeland, his district, his people, the war in the Balkans, and about the baths on the river Sava in Belgrado where it flows into the Danube. ‘Better Life‘ was published in 100,000 copies and is a work that deserves his little place on the shelf. A criticism concerns the cover: too banal. Likely it was been imposed by the publisher, because writers usually should not be lacking in imagination. Anyway, every time I read his name printed in Polyphemic font I always have the same question: what does the ‘P’ stand for? When I’ll meet him, I’ll ask him. Well, it reminds me of the most famous Hollywood’s quotation ever, even though I doubt it could have the same meaning as the one in Joseph P. Brenner.

In tempi recenti il nome del fiume Sava mi è tornato sotto gli occhi per un motivo estraneo alla pesca sportiva: Masterpiece. Si tratta di un programma televisivo unico, un talent nel quale aspiranti scrittori sono chiamati a promuovere – e a difendere – il proprio capolavoro. Vincitore della prima edizione è stato Nikola P. Savic, un serbo trasferitosi da piccolo in un paesino a ovest di Venezia, e il suo romanzo fortemente autobiografico parla proprio della patria lasciata, del suo quartiere, della sua gente, della guerra nei Balcani, dei bagni nella Sava a Belgrado là dove poco oltre va a confluire nel Danubio. ‘Vita migliore’ è stato pubblicato in 100 mila copie ed è un’opera che merita il suo posticino nello scaffale; se gli si può appuntare una critica, questa riguarda la copertina fin troppo banale. Probabile che gli sia stata imposta dall’editore, anche perché di solito gli scrittori non dovrebbero difettare in fantasia. Ogni volta che vi leggo il suo nome a caratteri polifemici mi sorge sempre lo stesso dubbio: per cosa sta quella ‘P.’? Se mai mi capiterà di incontrarlo, statene certi che glielo chiederò. Ricorda tanto la più celebre battuta hollywoodiana di tutti i tempi, anche se dubito possa avere il medesimo significato di quella contenuta in Joseph P. Brenner.

Masterpiece liked to the TV managers of other countries, so much so that they have purchased the format, and if in the coming months you’ll see on your television a talent in which poor aspiring scribblers are mistreated, now you know that everything had its origin in the city of Turin. However, should the Italics expect the Masterpiece’s second edition during the next fall? Answer: no, at least for the time it’s not on the program. The fact is that smart things doesn’t work in the very sad Italy, as you surely already know.

Masterpiece è piaciuto ai manager delle televisioni di altri paesi, tanto da acquistarne il format. Quindi, se nei prossimi mesi vedrete sulle vostre TV un talent show in cui vengono maltrattati poveri aspiranti scribacchini, sappiate che tutto ha avuto origine nella città di Torino. A proposito, che il prossimo autunno gli italici debbano aspettarsi la seconda edizione del programma? Risposta: no, almeno per il momento non se ne parla. Il fatto è che le cose intelligenti non funzionano nella triste Italia, come sicuramente già sapete.

I always take my photos using RAW format and after the shooting optimize them with Lightroom, but not during the 2009 European Championship: like a beginner I taken them directly in JPEG, the compressed format with loss of information, the same one used by mobile phones and cheap compact cameras. Differences between these two formats are in the quality and in the space that files fill on the memory card: RAW maintains all the image information but it is heavy and takes a lot of memory, while the other one does exacly the opposite. The biggest advantage of RAW is that it allows you a great amount of control in post production and that’s because almost all pros taking their pictures using this mode.

Scatto sempre le mie foto nel formato RAW per poi ottimizzarle in Lightroom, ma non nell’occasione dell’europeo 2009: da buon dilettante le scattai direttamente in Jpeg, il formato compresso con perdita di informazioni su cui basano il loro funzionamento anche i telefonini e le fotocamere compatte da pochi euro. La differenza tra questi due formati sta nella qualità e nello spazio che il file occupa in memoria: il RAW mantiene tutte le informazioni dell’immagine ma è pesante e occupa molta memoria, mentre l’altro fa esattamente l’opposto. Il vantaggio del RAW è che esso permette margini di intervento sull’immagine nettamente superiori, motivo per cui quasi tutti i professionisti scattano le loro foto in questa modalità.

7,240 grams for him, but I can’t tell you anything about his placement. Instead, it’s interesting the cap of this gentleman: the logo SAM you read is about of a fishing rod manufacturer (Sam is a surname) who had its headquarter in the city of Pordenone, Friuli, in the northeast of the peninsula, as well as near there existed various other fishing rod companies of which the most famous was Triana. It was a family craft business in a sixties and seventies perfect style, companies founded and directed by a father/owner which remained on the market until they had the support of the fishing boom of that period. But the good period finished, and many old match anglers with it: when the market decided to align with the laws of economics, to the fathers/owners of the old school (who knew very little of economy) disappeared the ground under their feet. And their companies with it.

Invece è interessante il berretto di questo signore: il logo SAM che potete leggere è quello di un produttore di canne da pesca che aveva sede nella città friulana di Pordenone, nel nordest della penisola, così come nei pressi ne esistevano varie altre tra le quali la più famosa fu senz’altro la Triana. Erano aziende artigianali a conduzione famigliare in perfetto stile anni sessanta-settanta, ovvero fondate e dirette in prima persona dal padre-imprenditore che rimasero sul mercato finché ebbero il sostegno del boom della pesca sportiva. Estintosi il periodo buono e con esso molti vecchi pescatori, nel momento in cui quello stesso mercato che fino ad allora li aveva premiati decise poi di allinearsi alle leggi dell’economia, quegli imprenditori di vecchio stampo che di economia gran poco sapevano si videro sparire il terreno da sotto i piedi. E con esso le loro aziende.

There are two philosophies to conduct a competition for team: I call them the ‘über alles‘ and the ‘all togheter passionately‘. In ‘all togheter passionately‘ philosophy, the match strategy is planned by team managers and matchanglers must comply with it during the competition; sometimes it works and sometimes not, the fact is that in the name of a team placing often an athlete is penalized in what should be his highest aspiration: the top position over the individual podium. A typical team that follows this philosophy is the Italian one to the point that it is not difficult to see its members get to do the peschetta to the small fish under their own feet in order to defend a modest position, rather than aiming to the winning fish.

Esistono due distinte filosofie nella condotta di gara in una manifestazione per squadre, quelle che io chiamo la ‘über alles’ e la ‘tutti assieme appassionatamente’. Nella ‘tutti assieme appassionatamente’ la strategia pianificata a tavolino dai cittì è quella che poi i garisti dovranno rispettare durante lo svolgimento delle prove; a volte funziona e a volte no, di certo è che nel nome di un piazzamento di squadra molto spesso l’atleta si vede penalizzare in quella che dovrebbe essere la sua massima aspirazione: il gradino più alto del podio individuale. Una tipica squadra che segue questa filosofia alla lettera è il team italiano, al punto che non è difficile vedere i suoi componenti mettersi a fare la peschetta ai pescetti sotto i piedi pur di difendere un risulto modesto, piuttosto che puntare al jolly risolutore.

Englishmen think it different and if the team placement is important for them, the individual one seems to be too. Or much more. After all who can blame them? Pointing to individual glory they do good for the team as well, and looking at statistics they have a team title more than Italy (13 vs 12), not counting the individual titles and legends (living and not). Numbers are merciless and leave no margin for discussions: this is winning mentality and people love winners. Everytime I look at photos like this one, I think that the real opponents of an English angler are his own teammates, rather than the other matchanglers in the sector.

Gli inglesi sono fatti di tutt’altra pasta e se per loro il piazzamento di squadra è importante, quello individuale lo è altrettanto. O molto di più. Del resto come dargli torto? Puntando alla gloria personale si fa pure il bene della squadra e a conti fatti oggi hanno un mondiale a squadre in più dell’Italia (13 contro 12), senza contare i titoli individuali e le leggende più o meno viventi. Comunque i numeri sono impietosi e non lasciano margine alle discussioni: questa è mentalità vincente e alla gente piace i vincenti. Quando vedo foto come questa, a volte penso che i veri avversari di un inglese siano i suoi stessi compagni di squadra, piuttosto che gli altri garisti nel proprio settore.

The average size was not high in this area, even if I remember the catch of a big carp by an upstream competitor. I’ve seen photos with big breams catched during the World Championship for clubs of last June, and this increases my regret for not being there.

La taglia media dei pesci non era elevata in questo settore, anche se ricordo la cattura di una grossa carpa da parte di un concorrenti più a monte. In un report sul mondiale per club dello scorso giugno ho visto foto con bréme molto grosse, cosa che aumenta il rammarico per non esserci stato.

There was also Jacopo Falsini in that edition of the European Championship for nations, I remember it well because we had a friendly discussion (he’s a gentleman) about a sentence in an article of mine published two years before. The object was his individual world title won by Jacopo in 2000 in Florence when he scored the same points of Will Raison, beating the Englishman for the top weight. An individual title that I defined as ‘won in the home garden’. There was no malice in my sentence, of course, but an observation dictated by my outspoken writing style. Anyway, if I were Falsini I’d be pissed off if I had read about of ‘a title lost in the house garden‘…

Luigino Sorti, team Italy. C’era anche Jacopo Falsini in quella edizione dell’europeo per nazioni, me lo ricordo bene poiché avemmo una cordiale discussione relativa a una frase apparsa in un mio articolo pubblicato qualche anno prima su una rivista che oggi non esiste più. L’oggetto era il suo titolo mondiale individuale vinto nel 2000 nell’Arno a Firenze quando arrivò a pari punti con Will Raison, battendo l’inglese per il peso superiore, un titolo che definii come ‘vinto nel giardino di casa’. Non c’era malizia in quella frase, ovvio, ma una semplice constatazione dettata dallo stile schietto della mia scrittura. Comunque, io al posto suo mi sarei risentito se avessi letto di un ‘titolo perso nel giardino di casa’…

In rivers of central and northern part of the Italian peninsula there’s an endemic varieties belonging to the same genus called savetta (Chondrostoma soetta), which is smaller than the nasen but really appreciated by anglers for his combativeness. It’s an animal in rarefaction, overpowered by alien species, pollution and environment devastations.

Nei fiumi della parte centrale e settentrionale della penisola italica esiste una varietà endemica appartenente a questo stesso genere, chiamata savetta (Chondrostoma soetta). È un pesce che raggiunge dimensioni inferiori rispetto al nasen ma al tempo stesso apprezzatissima dai pescatori al colpo per la sua combattività. Si tratta di un animale in rarefazione, sopraffatta dall’inquinamento, dalla devastazione dell’ambiente e dal successo delle specie aliene.

England, third ranked team. I’m convinced that all the girls are cute, but it’s undeniable that some ones are cutest than others: I shoted on slides the best photos of Slovenian girls at the award ceremony, so I cannot insert them here… the most serious limitation of this article. Really a shame!

This second magnification seems less interesting than the previous one, and I was very undecided before add it in the article; it appears less sharp because placed forward respect to the focus plane, which is coincident with the subject’s body. However, it is still readable and represent a historical memory able to contextualize the event.

Questo secondo ingrandimento sembra meno interessante rispetto al precedente, e infatti sono rimasto indeciso fino all’ultimo prima di inserirlo; esso appare meno nitido perché posto in avanti rispetto al piano di messa a fuoco, coincidente con il corpo del soggetto. Ad ogni modo è ancora leggibile e rappresenta una memoria storica in grado di contestualizzare l’evento.

This time the limits of 6 megapixels can be seen in the high contrast areas of the ‘FIPS’ letters; anyway the textures of the shirt and the metal mesh remains perfectly legible. It’s appropriate to say: the film’s fate was already written during that distant September 2003. Today you can find an EOS 300D on the second hand market at around € 100 in good condition and complete with its little standard zoom, but is it worth it? It depends. If you are interested in photo collecting and feel the pleasure of owning an object that has made the recent history of photography, then yes, it’s worth it. But if you don’t care about the story and are only interested in the photographic performance, I suggest you to focus on later models: there’s a big gap between this first amatorial model and the one of the next generation (EOS 350D, here a little Canon’s road map), so with a few more euros you can have a much better camera.

Stavolta i limiti dei 6 MP si notano tutti nelle zone ad alto contrasto lungo i bordi della scritta ‘FIPS’; a parte ciò, restano perfettamente leggibili le trame del metallo e della maglia. È proprio il caso di dirlo: il destino della pellicola era stato scritto già in quel lontano settembre 2003. Oggi si può trovare una 300D sul mercato dell’usato a circa 100 euro in buone condizioni e completa del suo zoom standard, ma ne vale la pena? Dipende. Se avete il piglio del collezionismo fotografico e sentite il piacere di possedere un oggetto che ha fatto la storia recente della fotografia, allora sì, ne vale la pena. Ma se della storia ve ne fregate e siete interessati solo alle prestazioni fotografiche, vi suggerisco di puntare sui modelli successivi: esiste un abisso tra questo primo modello amatoriale e quello di una sola generazione successiva (la EOS 350D), per cui con pochi euro in più vi aggiudicherete una macchina assai migliore sotto molti punti di vista.

Last month (8th-10th November) was to take place the 2013 edition of the FishingShow, the largest Italian show dedicated to the sport fishing, which is usually housed at the exhibition halls in Bologna. 2013 edition of the FishingShow was not held, it is skipped and officially postponed to the next year in conjunction with the Eudishow, the diving exhibition (14th-17th March). Farsighted choice, even because it offers the opportunity to access to two events by paying only one ticket. A doubt remains: this year the Motor Show didn’t take place because of the crisis, and whether an event like the Motorshow is canceled…

Lo scorso mese di novembre si sarebbe dovuta svolgere l’edizione 2013 del FishingShow, la più grande fiera italica dedicata al mondo della pesca sportiva che si tiene di solito nei padiglioni espositivi della città di Bologna. L’edizione 2013 del FishingShow non si è tenuta. È letteralmente saltata, rinviata al marzo del prossimo anno in concomitanza con l’EudiShow, la fiera della subacquea. Scelta lungimirante, anche per il fatto di offrire ai visitatori la possibilità di accedere a due manifestazioni pagando un solo biglietto. Permane un dubbio: quest’anno non si è disputato nemmeno il Motorshow a causa della grande crisi, e se una manifestazione come il Motorshow viene annullata…

To those who wanted to visit the fair last month, I suggest this article about the 2012 edition. Patience, even though I must admit that if she had not been excluded, perhaps I would never took this portraits.

Il regolamento le vieta l’accesso e poco importa se lei sia più pulita ed educata di tanti bipedi: le regole sono regole, e quando fa comodo si fanno rispettare. Pazienza, anche se devo ammettere che se non fosse stata esclusa, forse non sarei mai arrivato a scattarle dei ritratti.

Silenziosamente, senza abbaiare o ringhiare. E lo fa ogni volta che è contenta, come quando riceve una carezza da parte di uno sconosciuto. Se non vi è mai capitato di vederne uno prima, questo è il sorriso di un cane. Misty è unica!

The extreme close-ups shots are characterized from a limited depth of field, or the area in which the image is perfectly sharp. Even if it’s foregone, the focus point must agree with the subject’s eyes, otherwise it will be a photo to declare. Unfortunately this is the case of the squid jig you see: the focus is slightly set back from the red eye. National Geographic would never have published it.

Le inquadrature ravvicinate impongono una limitata profondità di campo, ovvero dell’area in cui l’immagine è perfettamente nitida. Anche se sembra inutile doverlo spiegare, il punto di fuoco deve coincidere con gli occhi del soggetto; diversamente sarà una foto da scartare. Purtroppo questo è il caso della totanara che vedete: la messa a fuoco è leggermente arretrata rispetto al bulbo rosso. National Geographic non me l’avrebbe mai pubblicata.

I took this photo of the poster at the entrance of a stand. A very good image, except for the fact that it’s not a real photograph: is a montage as you can see from the point where the hooks’ tips emerge from the mouth. Anyway, the effect is guaranteed.

Ho scattato questa fotografia al manifesto posto all’ingresso di uno degli stand. Un’immagine d’impatto, nulla da dire, se non fosse che non si tratta di una vera fotografia: è un fotomontaggio come potete notare dal punto in cui le punte dell’ancoretta emergono dalla bocca del luccio. Ad ogni modo, l’effetto è garantito.

The added value in this image is in the discreet smile, which saves it from the limbo of the trivial shots. However, like the previous one also this image is affected by a focus error: to be focused is the closest subject, or the wrong one. Not even this picture will be published on the National Geographic magazine. By the way, the reels they are handling are American war machines by ZeeBaaS.

Il valore aggiunto in questa immagine sta nel sorriso discreto del soggetto in secondo piano, che la salva dal limbo degli scatti banali. Tuttavia, come la precedente, anche questa è affetta da un errore di messa a fuoco: a essere nitido è il soggetto in primo piano, ovvero quello sbagliato. Non dovevo essere in gran forma quel giorno… nemmeno questa finirà su National Geographic. A proposito, i mulinelli che stanno maneggiando sono macchine da guerra prodotte da ZeeBaaS.

I took these photos in the stand of a company which import plastic models of animals; the more interesting ones were hanging on the walls. The attention to detail was pretty good, although with some trimming. They’re ideal for those who want to take home a trophy without sacrificing the animal.

Ho scattato queste foto nello stand di un’azienda che importava modelli di animali in plastica di ogni dimensioni; quelli che interessavano di più ai pescatori erano appesi alle pareti. La cura dei particolari era abbastanza buona, anche se con qualche sbavatura. Rappresentano la soluzione ideale per coloro che vogliono portarsi a casa un trofeo senza sacrificare l’animale.

Horrible! Some model wasn’t so good like the others and only with a lot of imagination you can see a brown trout in this piece of molded plastic. The worst thing is the livery: Ray Charles would have painted it better.

Orrenda! Qualche modello non era all’altezza degli altri e solo con molta fantasia si può vedere una brown trout in questo pezzo di plastica stampata. La cosa peggiore è la livrea: Ray Charles l’avrebbe dipinta meglio.

Not only fish. Some models seemed very good, but never all the way: mammals have hair and also whiskers, that in certain animals are important sense organs.

Non solo pesci. Per quanto curati possono essere certi modelli, non lo sono mai fino in fondo: i mammiferi hanno peli, e pure i baffi che in certi animali sono organi di senso importanti.

Reptiles, like fish, don’t have hair or whiskers, and are easier to imitate. These models were really well done.

I rettili, come i pesci, non hanno peli né baffi e sono più semplici da imitare. Questi modellini erano davvero ben fatti.

An European tortoise and a Greek tortoise. Modern cameras are very advanced, but are not able to understand where focusing a subject at close range. Even with all the technology they contain, are basically very stupid objects and you can only capture photos like these respecting two rules: using a reflex camera and set it to manual focus. My photos are always taken respecting these two dogmas, which give also another great advantage: if a picture is not perfeclty clear, I always know who to blame.

Una testuggine europea e una testuggine greca. Per quanto avanzate siano le macchine fotografiche moderne, esse non sono in grado di comprendere in quale punto focheggiare un soggetto ravvicinato. Pur con tutta la tecnologia che contengono, sono fondamentalmente degli oggetti molto sciocchi e foto come queste potete scattarle solo rispettando due regole: usare una reflex, e impostarla in manual focus. Le mie foto sono sempre scattate rispettando questi due dogmi, che in più danno anche un altro grande vantaggio: se una foto non è perfettamente nitida, so sempre a chi dare la colpa.

Even before to realize what he was doing, I told him that he had made a serious strategic error. Then he asked me: ‘What mistake?’ Surely you understand it looking at this picture: an operation like this, apart from any technical reason, had to be make by a young lady in a miniskirt, that in a fair like this with a strong male presence would have had a devastating success. Then Moreno replied with a smile: ‘Actually, you’re not the first one that tell me about it…’

Questo signore è Moreno Calzavara, titolare del più grande negozio di pesca sportiva di tutto il nord east, oltre che importatore per la penisola dei prodotti P-Line. Prima ancora di capire cosa stesse facendo, gli dissi che aveva commesso un grave errore strategico. Lui allora sorpreso mi chiese: ‘Quale errore?’ Sicuramente lo avrete capito anche voi guardando questa foto: un’operazione come questa, a prescindere da qualsiasi considerazione tecnica, andava fatta fare a una signorina in minigonna, cosa che in una fiera a forte presenza maschile avrebbe avuto un successo devastante. Allora Moreno mi rispose sorridendo: ‘In effetti non sei il primo che me lo fa presente…’

I will not explain in details the operation you see in these pictures, because you will find lots of interesting information in the Web. Here I only say that the Stop Glue (take a look also to the orizontal menù) is not a crystallizing glue, but a real sealing system that allows to combine wires of different nature and diameters leaving unchanged the breaking strenght (each knot in a line is a point of weakness). A knot-free system so innovative that obtained an official prize to the Efttex Awards 2011.

Non vi spiegherò nei dettagli le operazioni che vedete in queste foto, anche perché trovate molte informazioni sul Web. Qui vi dico solo che lo Stop Glue non è un è un collante cianoacrilico, ma un vero e proprio sistema saldante che permette di unire senza nodi filati di varia natura lasciandone invariati i carichi di rottura (i nodi rappresentano punti di criticità), un sistema talmente innovativo da ottenere un riconoscimento ufficiale agli Efftex Awards del 2011.

I confess I was surprised to see a stand with Preston Innovations’ products, as I cannot hide some perplexity. My personal opinion is that the Italian market is armoured, or no much receptive and extremely difficult for those foreign players who wish to deal it in theese years. Not only because of the crisis (and the Italiot ruling class) that has literally sunk the country, but also for another factor even more difficult. Nationalism has nothing to do. Italians are not nationalists, on the contrary: considering the independence movements that developed in the north, south and in each of the two main islands, I would say that they are diametrically opposed to the French. From this point of view, Italic market is much easier than the French one. The situation is another: Italy is surrounded by a wonderful sea, as there are many rivers flowing on its territory, so it was inevitable that were founded lots of companies in the area, firms often started by the opening of a store or a simple laboratory in the sixties and seventies, and then developed at the international level. Anyway, best wishes to Preston and to those who are believing in this business.

Non nascondo di essere stato sorpreso nel vedere per la prima volta uno stand con i prodotti di Preston Innovations, così come non posso nascondere una certa perplessità. Mia personale opinione è che il mercato italiano sia blindato, ovvero poco recettivo e tremendamente difficile per quei player esteri che intendano affrontarlo in questi anni. Non solo per l’effetto devastante derivato dal mix di una classe dirigente infima e della grande crisi che han affossato la penisola, ma sopratutto per un altro fattore ancora più ostico. Il nazionalismo non centra nulla: gli italiani non sono nazionalisti, anzi, considerando i movimenti indipendentisti che si sono sviluppati a nord, a sud e in ciascuna delle due isole maggiori, direi proprio che sono agli antipodi rispetto ai francesi. Da questo punto di vista, il mercato italico è molto più facile di quello transalpino. La questione è un’altra: l’Italia è circondata da un mare meraviglioso, così come molti sono in fiumi che vi scorrono; era inevitabile che in un territorio con queste caratteristiche sorgessero numerose aziende del settore (come del resto in quello nautico e della subacquea), realtà spesso partite dall’apertura da un negozio o di un semplice laboratorio negli anni cinquanta-sessanta, per poi svilupparsi a livello internazionale nelle decadi successive. A ogni modo, auguri a Preston e a coloro che ci stanno credendo.

I have a great admiration for the fly fishing and for those who practice it, and in recent years I tried many times to get interested in this fishing style. I have never been able, too bad.

Provo una grande ammirazione per la pesca a mosca e per coloro che la praticano, al punto che in passato più volte ho cercato a di appassionarmi a questo stile di pesca, senza però mai riuscirci. Peccato.

Mr Francesco Palù is instead one of those men that have made the history of fishing in the peninsula, and is known even by those who don’t ever handled a fly rod in their lives. He lives in Friuli, in the north east, where in he founded a company specialized in very high quality fly fishing products.

Palù invece è uno di quei personaggi che hanno fatto la storia della pesca in Italia, ed è conosciuto anche da coloro che una canna a mosca non l’anno mai maneggiata in vita loro. Vive in Friuli dove ha fondato una sua azienda specializzata in prodotti di altissima qualità.

Some Italian reels made by a firm extinct for many years. Some time ago, was founded a company which use the name Alcedo, but of course all its production has oriental origins, and I think that has nothing to do with the historic brand.

Alcuni esemplari di produzione italiana realizzati da un’azienda che non esiste più da molti anni. Tempo fa è stata fondata una ditta commerciale che usa lo storico nome Alcedo, ma ovviamente tutta la sua produzione ha origini orientali, e credo che non abbia nulla a che spartire con lo storico marchio.

The models that you can buy from these gentlemen are fully functional, as this fast Mitchell 810 loaded with sinking line for English style (note the 6:1 gear ratio on the handle). They may also be used in high-level competitions, such as in the river Mincio at Peschiera del Garda, where is still practice a refined Bolognese style.

The result of another art form: the ones you see are whips made of natural cane by a famous craftsman who had his own workshop here in Bologna. The sixties and seventies of the last century was the heyday of sport fishing in Italy, and in this city there were almost two hundred fishing shops.

Il risultato di un’altra forma d’arte: quelle che vedete sono canne fisse realizzate in canna naturale da un celebre artigiano che aveva il suo laboratorio proprio qui, a Bologna. Gli anni cinquanta, sessanta e settanta dello scorso secolo furono il periodo d’oro della pesca in Italia e solo qui, in questa città, c’erano oltre duecento negozi di pesca.

‘Vig-Pao’ is part of the surnames of Gino Vigarani and Gianfranco Paolucci. Vigarani was the first individual world champion in the history of the World Freshwater Angling Championship and you can find his name at the top of this list (or of this one), while Paolucci is the joiner who during the fifties was converted to fishing and from whose hands were born the jewels you see above. To them we owe the birth of the fishing technique which takes its name from the city of Bologna.

Vigarani è stato il primo campione del mondo individuale nella storia dell’agonismo (il suo nome lo trovate in cima a questa lista), mentre Paolucci è il falegname che durante gli anni cinquanta si convertì alla pesca e dalle cui mani nacquero i gioielli che vedete. A loro si deve la nascita della tecnica di pesca che prende il nome dalla città di Bologna.

The first two hours spent along the upper course of the river Sile have been a lethal boredom: nothing, not even a flicker of the tip which was not determined by a rain’s drop. It gets ever stronger the idea to try again another day. The photo you see is more significant than it appears, and can tell about a crucial technical detail: float and rod tip work at the same distance from the bank.

Le prime due ore trascorse lungo l’alto corso del fiume Sile sono state di una noia letale: nulla, nemmeno un tremolio dell’astina che non fosse determinato dall’ennesima goccia di pioggia che la colpiva. E si fa sempre più forte l’idea riprovare in un altro momento. La foto che vedete è più significativa di quanto appare, tanto che anche da sola è in grado di raccontare un particolare tecnico molto interessante: galleggiante e punta della canna lavorano alla stessa distanza dalla sponda.

‘You think to take pictures, that fish are my business‘ Mauro Lanzarini says to me; he’s one of the best anglers from all over the northeast, and when I say best I mean that you can count them on the fingers of a truncated hand. But the words don’t cost anything, and proof about it is one of the Italians’ biggest flaws: the abuse of adjectives. There are more than 25,000 ones in their dictionary and the temptation to put them inappropriately into sentences is always great. Among the most inflated ones there are ‘bello’, ‘very’, ‘important’ and of course ‘best’. When using certain adjectives, you should always be prepared to demonstrate with facts, and with the images.

Ce ne sono oltre 25000 nel loro vocabolario e la tentazione di infilarne a sproposito nelle frasi è sempre grande. Tra i più inflazionati vi sono ‘bello’, ‘molto’, ‘importante’ e ovviamente ‘migliore’. Quando si usano certi aggettivi bisognerebbe sempre essere pronti a dimostrare con i fatti, e con le immagini.

Allora continuo a rimanermene tranquillo sotto l’ombrellone, ad aspettare fiducioso. Che noia però! A un certo punto ho trovato interessante perfino questo soggetto.

Instead they don’t care about rain and cold. Usually in the spring you can see the parents followed by 5-6 chicks, then dropped to number in the fall; seeing scenes like this, I always wonder what happened to the other ones. Diseases and rats will certainly play their part, but the river Sile is also inhabited by huge pike and wels catfish: it’s not hard to imagine that some of those chicks has been predated from below.

Di solito in primavera si vedono i genitori seguiti da 5-6 pulcini, per poi scendere di numero in autunno; nel vedere scene come questa mi chiedo sempre che fine abbiano fatto gli altri piccoli. Malattie e ratti faranno sicuramente la loro parte, ma le acque del Sile sono abitate anche da lucci enormi e da siluri: non è difficile pensare che qualcuno di quei pulcini abbia subito una predazione dal basso.

It’s stopped raining and I take some pictures for the equipment. When he goes on the hunt for big chubs, Mauro prepares only one rod: he knows exactly which line to use based on water conditions. Today, however, has opened three Bolognesi rod, a fact unusual for him and you can consider it as an exception in honor of the photo shoot. So, let’s see these three gems: two Daiwa Competition 7115 and one Competition-X, all of seven meters long; CP 7115 were engineered in Japan, the second one in Great Britain. Both of these models have been marketed over a decade ago, and of course they are out of catalog now. The Bolognese style is practiced almost exclusively in Italy, rarely during matches: even when fishing for pleasure, Italic anglers tend to no use the whip and Bolognese in favor of the match rod and pole. In certain types of fishing, however, the traditional Italic technique is more effective than any other style.

Ha smesso di piovere; ne approfitto per qualche foto all’attrezzatura. Quando va a caccia di grossi cavedani, Mauro prepara una sola canna: sa esattamente quale lenza impiegare in base alle condizioni dell’acqua. Oggi invece ha aperto tre bolognesi, un fatto inconsueto per lui; potete considerarlo come un’eccezione in onore del servizio fotografico. Allora vediamoli questi tre gioiellini. Si tratta di due Daiwa Competition 7115 e di una Competition-X, tutte di sette metri; la prima è stata disegnata in Giappone, la seconda in Gran Bretagna. Entrambi questi modelli sono stati commercializzati oltre una decina di anni fa e oggi sono fuori catalogo. La pesca a bolognese viene praticata quasi esclusivamente in Italia, quasi mai durante le gare: anche quando pescano per diletto, i pescatori italici tendono a non usare più la canna fissa e la bolognese in favore della match rod e della roubaisienne. In certi tipi di pesca in fiume, però, la tradizionale tecnica italica è più efficace di qualsiasi altro stile.

It may seem strange, but the best producer of Bolognese rods is not Italian (although there are many companies working on carbon in Italy). The best bolognese come from Tokyo or from Wishaw, and are so well made that certain models are hardly available on the second hand market: in fact, those who appreciate the value of these products unlikely sells them. Also note that a tool of this type does not suffer the wear of a roubaisienne, thus with a good Bolognese you can fish for a life. The models of foreign brands are almost always produced exclusively for the Italian market, and if you are interested in having some of high level, you have to take a plane or buy them on Internet. Don’t underestimate the second hand market: with a small cost you may award rods at the highest level. Unlike what happens with the pole, a well made Bolognese rod don’t need improvements and is virtually timeless. Both models of Daiwa were designed to confer them an medium-light action for fishing with floats up to 8 grams. Mauro’s favorite is the Competition-X, which has a softer and lighter action than the CP 7115.

Potrà sembrare strano, ma il migliore produttore di canne bolognesi non è italiano (pur essendoci in Italia molte aziende che lavorano il carbonio). Le migliori bolognesi vengono da Tokio o da Wishaw, e sono così ben realizzate che difficilmente certi modelli sono reperibili sul mercato dell’usato: infatti, chi sa apprezzare il valore di questi prodotti difficilmente se ne libera. Tenete anche presente che un attrezzo di questo tipo non subisce l’usura tipica di una canna ad innesti, quindi con una buona bolognese potrete pescarci una vita. I modelli di marchi stranieri quasi sempre vengono prodotti esclusivamente per il mercato italiano, e se siete interessati ad averne di alto livello dovrete prendere un aereo o acquistarle via Internet. Vi consiglio di non sottovalutare il mercato dell’usato: con una spesa modesta ci si possono aggiudicare fusti di altissimo livello. A differenza di quanto avviene con le roubaisienne, la bolognese ben realizzata non è suscettibile di miglioramenti eclatanti e praticamente non ha tempo. Entrambi i modelli di Daiwa sono stati disegnati per conferirgli un’azione medio leggera indicata per una passata con galleggianti fino a 8 grami. La preferita di Mauro resta la Competition-X: rispetto alla CP7115, ha un’azione ancora più morbida e leggera.

A line with a two grams flat float was built on one of the Competition 7115, a solution that you usually see on the poles. ‘The real limits are in people’s minds‘ Mauro told me when I asked the reason for a so unusual choice. I had never seen this type of float in Bolognese fishing, but has its own logic: the line will not be launched towards the center of the river, as you normally would think, but will work under the tip. The action will be very similar to that of a whip or a pole. Think about it: the current is much slower near the bank than the center of the river, and the four meters depth allows to have only a little line between the tip and the float. Under these conditions the control is maximum, so that the reel is downgraded to a reserve of line, only necessary to counter the leakage of large fish. The bail will almost always be closed: the line is just lying on the water’s surface as if you were employing a whip rod.

Su una delle due Competition 7115 è stata costruita una lenza con un galleggiante piatto di due grammi, una soluzione che di solito si vede sulle canne ad innesti. ‘I limiti veri stanno nella testa della gente’ mi ha risposto Mauro quando gli ho chiesto la ragione di una scelta tanto inusuale. Non avevo mai visto usare questo tipo di segnalatore su una bolognese, tuttavia ha una sua logica: la lenza non verrà lanciata verso il centro del fiume, come normalmente si sarebbe portati a pensare, bensì lavorerà sotto la punta. L’azione sarà molto simile a quella di una canna ad innesti oppure una fissa. Pensateci: la corrente è molto più lenta nei pressi della sponda rispetto al centro del fiume, e la profondità di quattro metri (sui sette della canna) permette di avere liberi solo pochi metri di filo tra la punta e il galleggiante. In queste condizioni il controllo sulla lenza è massimo, al punto che il mulinello è declassato a riserva di filo, necessario solo per contrastare le fughe di grossi pesci. L’archetto resterà quasi sempre chiuso: la lenza viene distesa sulla superficie dell’acqua come se si stesse adoperando una canna fissa.

At other times, the little flat float worked perfectly with the huge chubs in the province of Venice, but not today: they have shown a preference for a traditional one. The Competition-X W70 was prepared with a classical float by 1.5 grams, while the other Competition 7115 had a model just heavier. The latter will be the winning line of the day.

In altre occasioni il piccolo galleggiante piatto ha funzionato perfettamente con i cavedani enormi della provincia di Venezia, ma non stavolta: oggi hanno dimostrato di preferire una lenza tradizionale. La Competition-X W70 è stata preparata con un classico galleggiante da 1,5 grammi, mentre l’altra Competition 7115 portava un modello appena più pesante. Sarà quest’ultima la lenza vincente della giornata.

Ricomincia a piovere, governo ladro! Ma il peggio viene dal fiume: nessuna risposta nonostante siano trascorse due ore. Sembra che non vi sia nulla là sotto, il deserto totale. Mauro mi tranquillizza: i grossi cavedani ci sono sempre e solo nelle più gelide giornate invernali di gennaio e febbraio si può incappare in un cappotto, peraltro piuttosto raro. Novembre è un periodo ancora ottimo.

I’ve just to go back under my umbrella: even if the body of my Alpha 700 is weather sealed, the same cannot be said about the Sigma 17-70. Better not risk. The weatherman said that the climate would be improved in the late morning, with the sun peeking through the clouds. The problem is that in Italy the weather forecast changes every half hour, and sometimes you have more chances of winning at roulette.

Non mi resta che tornarmene sotto l’ombrellone: anche se il corpo della mia Alpha 700 è tropicalizzato, lo stesso non posso dire del Sigma 17-70. Meglio non rischiare. Le previsioni meteo della sera prima dicevano che il clima sarebbe migliorato in tarda mattinata, con tanto di sole a fare capolino tra le nuvole. Il problema è che in Italia le previsioni del tempo cambiano ogni mezz’ora, e a volte si ha più probabilità di vincere alla roulette.

It stopped raining and the temperature seems to rise slightly. The change coincides with the first bite: it seems a really nice fish, but we will not see it. The chub manages to free itself, even as the next two ones. I ask Mauro if it is appropriate to change the hook, but he replies with a smile. He knows these fish very well, and the problem is not the hook.

Non piove più e anche la temperatura sembra salire leggermente. Il cambiamento coincide con la prima abboccata: sembra davvero un bel pesce, ma non lo vedremo. Riesce a slamarsi, come ci riusciranno anche i successivi due. Dico a Mauro se non sia il caso di cambiare l’amo, ma lui mi risponde con un sorriso. Conosce bene questi pesci, e sa che il problema non è l’amo.

Direi anche ingenuo, come lo sono gli esemplari giovani: ha ingoiato l’esca senza farsi problemi, lo si può intuire dall’amo piantato ben oltre le labbra.

The choice of a stretch free by submerged aquatic plants is not random: big chubs of this river first trend to gain the strong current in the center, and then the meadows near the bank. Once they are in, hardly the 0.10 mm terminal line will allow you to drive them out.

La scelta di un tratto di sponda libero da piante acquatiche sommerse non è casuale: i grossi cavedani di questo fiume tentano per prima cosa di guadagnare la forte corrente del centro, e come ultima risorsa gli erbai presenti sotto la sponda. Una volta infilatisi, difficilmente il terminale da 0,10 mm vi permetterà di stanarli.

This is the second fish of the day, well over one kilo. It can seem a trivial concept, but a big fish is also heavy and not easy to handle, even more because it will tend to squirm. Along the banks and by social networks happen to see scenes by horror splatter film: people intent on raising big fish with fingers into the gill or even by pressing on the eyes (especially with carp). Questo è il secondo pesce della giornata, ben oltre il chilo di peso. Sarà un concetto banale, ma un grosso pesce è anche pesante e non facile da maneggiare, tanto più perché tenderà a dimenarsi. Lungo le sponde e sui social network capita di vedere scene da film horror splatter: gente intenta a sollevare grossi pesci con le dita conficcate nelle branchia o addirittura premendo sugli occhi (questo sopratutto con le carpe). Quello che vedete nella foto è l’unico modo corretto per sollevare un grosso pesce con una sola mano: l’opercolo è usato solo per una presa parziale del dito indice, che rimane lontano dagli archi branchiali. Ma quando il pesce è troppo grosso, va slamato dentro la testa del guadino e maneggiato con entrambe le mani, o non maneggiato affatto se non si sa come farlo.

I’ve seen the worst things during fishing competitions, both in commercials than in natural environments. It seems incredible, but in Italy match anglers are the first that don’t know how to handle a fish, and unfortunately regulations don’t help. Chubs of river Sile are perfect, at least in the upper stretch where there are no competitions and big fish let themselves captured only by the true anglers.

Le cose peggiori le ho viste fare durante le gare di pesca, sia nei carpodromi che in ambienti naturali. Sembra incredibile, ma i garisti sono i primi a non sapere come maneggiare correttamente il pesce, e purtroppo i regolamenti non aiutano. I cavedani del Sile sono perfetti, almeno nel tratto alto dove non si svolgono gare e i grossi pesci si lasciano catturare solo dai pescatori veri.

In spite of the water raised, the quantity of larvae ended up in the river is minimal at every launch.

A dispetto dell’acqua sollevata dall’impatto, la quantità di larve finite nel fiume è minima a ogni lancio. Lo vedremo tra poco.

It stopped raining and the temperature became milder. Mauro try again with his favorite rod and the line with a gram and a half, but didn’t get any results (by the way: at this link you’ll find Daiwa Bolognese rod models currently on the market).

Non piove più e anche la temperatura si è fatta mite. Mauro prova ancora con la sua canna preferita e la montatura da un grammo e mezzo, senza però ottenere alcun risultato.

It seems incredible, but an extra half a gram on the line has been crucial to convince the fish. Evidently they prefered a more stable presentation near the bottom.

Sembra incredibile, ma mezzo grammo in più sulla lenza è stato determinante per convincere i pesci ad abboccare. Evidentemente preferiscono una presentazione più stabile in prossimità del fondo.

It deserves a close-up. This animals are perfectly healthy and fat, grown in high quality water.

Merita un primo piano. Sono animali perfettamente sani e grassi, cresciuti in un acque di alta qualità.

Let’s analyze the baiting technique. This picture tells some interesting things, the most intuitive of which is that the baiting is always thrown downstream the point where the angler is, in spite of the flow and of the water wall high four meters. The high density is the target, as well as a limited quantity of maggots. Small and dense balls are obtained by adding large amount of gravel. This allows firstly to concentrate the larvae on the bottom with a minimum deviation respect to the point of entry into the water.

Analizziamo ora la tecnica di pasturazione. Questa foto racconta tre cose interessanti, la più intuitiva delle quali riguarda il fatto che il richiamo viene gettato sempre a valle della postazione in cui si trova il pescatore, e questo nonostante la corrente e il muro d’acqua di quattro metri. È l’elevata densità a fare la differenza, oltre che a un quantitativo limitato di larve. Palline piccole e dense si ottengono aggiungendo grandi quantità di ghiaino. Questo permette in primo luogo di far giungere il richiamo sul fondo con una minima deviazione rispetto al punto di entrata in acqua.

Many anglers think that to catch lots of chubs serves many kilos of maggots, or spending much money in baits (one kilogram of maggots cost around €7 in the peninsula). But the situation is different, luckily: looking at this picture it’s hard to find two larvae glued together, so great is the amount of inert (much cheaper). The secret is this: in addition to the high density, you get the advantage of providing less food to the fish avoiding to feed them too, putting them in competition for food.

Molti pescatori sono convinti che per fare una bella pescata di cavedani servano chili su chili di bigattini, ovvero spendendo cifre non trascurabili (un chilo di bigattini costa oggi nella penisola €7.5). Le cose stanno diversamente: guardando questa foto si fa fatica a trovare due larve incollate tra loro, tanto è grande il quantitativo di inerte (molto più economico). Il segreto è tutto qui: oltre all’elevata densità, si ottiene il vantaggio di offrire poco cibo al pesce evitando di saziarlo e mettendolo in competizione alimentare.

Also in this picture taken inside the bucket, you see very few larvae in contact with each others: you are seeing four kilos and a half of quartz sprayed with a kilo and a half of maggots. This report also offers another advantage not to be despised: it saves a lot of money. It’s not the same thing to buy 10 kilos of gravel in a sport fishing store rather than a resale of building materials.

Anche in questa foto scattata dentro al secchio si vedono pochissime larve a contatto tra loro: state vedendo quattro chili e mezzo di quarzite spruzzate con un chilo e mezzo di bigattini. Questo rapporto offre anche un altro vantaggio da non disprezzare: permette di risparmiare un sacco di soldi. Non è la stessa cosa acquistare 10 kg di ghiaino in un negozio di pesca sportiva piuttosto che in una rivendita di materiali per edilizia.

The boiled hemp is another ace for the predator of big chubs. Unlike the ball of maggots and gravel, it has to be slingshot few meters upstream from the fishing spot.

La canapa bollita è un altro asso nella manica del predatore di grossi cavedani. A differenza della pallina di bigattini e ghiaia, va fiondata qualche metro a monte rispetto al punto di pesca.

As for the gravel: you can save a lot of money by buying it in stores for animal food, but be careful. Hemp’s seeds must have the embryo still alive, this means that hemp must be pretty fresh. If during cooking the white radicle will not emerge, it means that the product was not enough fresh and even less palatable by the fish. Carp anglers are aware of these issues and make their business in stores of flour for animals, which are able to meet their demands: if you know a carp angler, then you also know where to find the best hemp.

Vale quanto detto per la ghiaia: si possono risparmiare molti soldi acquistandola nei negozi di alimenti per animali, ma attenzione a un particolare. Il seme della canapa deve avere l’embrione ancora vivo, ovvero deve essere abbastanza fresco. Se infatti durante la cottura non emergerà la radichetta bianca, significa che abbiamo un prodotto non fresco e men che meno appetibile al pesce. I carpisti sono consapevoli di queste problematiche e si riforniscono in negozi di farine per animali che sappiano soddisfare le loro richieste: se conoscete qualche carpista allora sapete anche dove trovare la canapa migliore.

Questo è uno dei due cavedanelli da 800 grammi che hanno rovinato la media della giornata; sono più ingenui e tendono a ingozzarsi accantonando la proverbiale diffidenza della specie.

The hook in the middle of the body allows the lure to sink and scroll with the same arrangement of other ones used as baiting. To create a solution like this, you need a very little hook, it is obvious, but to avoid damaging the larva it has also to be barbless. There are anglers who have enormous prejudice against these tools, believing that they may prejudice the captures than traditional models. Reality is that a real angler doesn’t need about a barb to catch nice fish, and this article proves it.

L’innesco a metà del corpo permette all’esca di affondare e scorrere sul fondale con lo stesso assetto delle altre usate come richiamo. Serve un amo molto piccolo, è ovvio, ma per evitare di ledere la larva esso dovrà anche essere privo dell’ardiglione. Ci sono pescatori che hanno enormi pregiudizi nei confronti di questi strumenti, ritenendo a torto che possano pregiudicare la cattura rispetto ai modelli tradizionali. La realtà è un’altra: chi sa davvero pescare i pesci li prende a prescindere dell’ardiglione, e questo articolo ne è la prova.

Big chubs are also smart and hardly you’ll catch someone with the hook into the oral apparatus: these animals test the deception just holding it between their lips. A good thing: the inner membranes are fragile and tend to tear easily when are injured by microscopic hooks. Other thing are the lips, made of more tenacious cartilage tissue and in which even a small barbless trinket is able to find a stable grip.

I cavedani grossi sono anche furbi e difficilmente ne guadinerete qualcuno con l’amo agganciato dentro l’apparato orale: sono animali che saggiano l’inganno tenendolo appena tra le labbra. Ed è una fortuna: le membrane interne sono fragili e tendono a lacerarsi facilmente quando punte da ami microscopici. Altra cosa sono le labbra, costituite di un tessuto cartilagineo ben più tenace in cui anche un oggettino senza ardiglione riesce a trovare una presa stabile.

There’s something more: a sized and quality disgorger like the Stonfo Little is essential not only to remove the hook properly, but also to respect the leader. Una volta finito di piovere, la famigliola di cigni ha deciso di stabilirsi sul piccolo pontile a valle della nostra postazione. Non sono stati i soli a farci compagnia.

Every now and then on the bank behind us someone stopped to admire the harmonic curve drawn by the Daiwa. One of those people was Alessio, a young former carp angler convert to the match fishing (strange: usually the opposite occurs). Alessio told us about his recent experience occurred a few yards downstream. He had noticed that a gypsy was watching him, but had not given importance because it was broad daylight and there were people strolling. Weighty error, because the creature burglarized his car parked a few meters away. Unfortunately this is not a rare thing: they are aggressive and unscrupulous, and not even they fear of being caught because know that they will not remain just a day in prison. Italy is a country with discredited institutions, as well as crammed full of all sorts of misfits. A devastating mix.

Di tanto in tanto sulla sponda alle nostre spalle si fermava qualcuno ad ammirare la curva armonica disegnata dalla Daiwa. Una di quelle persone era Alessio, giovane ex carpista convertitosi alla pesca al colpo (cosa insolita: di solito avviene il contrario). Tra un cavedano e l’altro, Alessio ci ha parlato di una sua recente esperienza avvenuta pescando su uno spot qualche metro più a valle. Si era accorto che uno zingaro lo stava osservando, ma non gli aveva dato importanza poiché era pieno giorno e c’era gente che passeggiava. Gravissmo errore, dato che gli ha scassinato l’auto parcheggiata a pochi metri di distanza. Purtroppo non si tratta di una cosa rara: sono aggressivi e spregiudicati, e non temono nemmeno di essere scoperti giacché sanno che in caso non faranno nemmeno un giorno di galera. L’Italia è un paese dalle istituzioni screditate, oltre che piena zeppa di ogni sorta di sbandati. Un mix devastante.

A high quality Bolognese rod you handle with one hand, but after hours of fishing fatigue begins to be felt. Above all during the strike, which in chub fishing must be swift. Mauro has tried again with his favorite rod, but chubs didn’t like that half gram in less on the line. This style of fishing at short range can also be practiced with another type of rod: the Barbara, always a typically Italian tool hybrid between the Bolognese and the whip (to use a few simple words, it is 100% a whip assembled with microrings and with a microreel). I don’t want to add anything else in this article, but in the future if I’ll get the chance I’ll propose an issue with the Barbara.

Una canna bolognese di alta qualità si maneggia con una sola mano, ma dopo ore di pesca la fatica inizia a farsi sentire. Sopratutto nella fase di ferrata, che pescando il cavedano deve essere fulminea. Mauro ha tentato per l’ultima volta con la sua canna preferita, ma ancora i cavedani non hanno gradito il grammo e mezzo di zavorra. Questo stile di pesca a corto raggio può essere praticato anche con un altro tipo di attrezzo: la Barbara. Si tratta sempre di un attrezzo tipicamente italiano, un ibrido tra la Bolognese e la canna fissa, e per usare poche semplici parole è al 100% una canna fissa montata con microanelli e un micromulinello. Non voglio aggiungere altro in questo articolo, ma se in futuro ne avrò l’occasione vi proporrò una battuta di pesca realizzata con il sistema della Barbara.

On the W70 Mauro has inserted a little bit special reel, a customized version of the Mitchell Quartz distributed by Colmic fifteen years ago. It’s different from the standard versions for the silver color and balanced handle, for the rest the design was identical to the official ones. There was also a larger version called Excellent 900, but I think the series has not had commercial success primarily to the high price, and then because Quartz was rejected by the market. I cannot tell if the project were affected by the particular manufacturing defects, however it’s a shame because the issue was original.

Sulla W70 Mauro ha inserito un mulinello un pò speciale: si tratta di una versione personalizzata del Mitchell Quartz distribuita da Colmic una quindicina di anni fa. Si distingueva dai modelli standard per il colore argentato e la manovella con bilancere, per il resto il progetto era identico. Esisteva anche una versione di dimensioni maggiori chiamata Excellent 900, ma credo che la serie non abbia avuto un successo commerciale anzitutto per il prezzo elevato, e poi perché lo stesso Quartz è stato bocciato dal mercato. Non so dirvi se il progetto fosse affetto da particolari difetti di produzione, ad ogni modo è un peccato perché era un prodotto originale.

This is the reel that has taken all the fish today; there’re some interesting details in this picture. First: the line does not reach the spool’s edge, despite of that you can see in many catalogs. The reason you have already guessed, and is due to the fact that in this fishing style the it only serves as a reserve of line to contrast the fish flight, and not to cast the line far. For this reason are not required expensive tools: the reel you see costed €25 and has done its job flawlessly. The finger on the rotor is suggesting a completely closed drag: the fish escape must be tackled leaving turn the rotor to the contrary. Last consideration: the words “10 ball bearings” printed on the casing. You can imagine the quality of all that scrap-iron inserted to mere marketing purposes, always assuming they are all in. A further proof that it doesn’t need big budgets to get big fish.

Questo è il mulinello che ha preso tutti i pesci di oggi; a guardare la foto non si può fare a meno di notare alcune cose meritevoli di un commento. La prima: il filo non raggiunge il bordo della bobina, come invece si vede nelle immagini dei cataloghi. Il motivo già lo avete intuito, ed è dovuto al fatto che in questo stile di pesca serve solo da riserva di filo per contrastre le fughe dei pesci, e non per lanciare la lenza lontano. Proprio per tale motivo non sono richiesti attrezzi costosi: quello che vedete è costato 25 euro e, nonostante sia il figlio minore di un dio cinese, ha svolto il suo lavoro in modo impeccabile. Il dito posizionato sul rotore sta a suggerire una frizione completamente chiusa e l’antiritorno disinserito: la fuga del pesce va contrastata lasciandolo scorrere al contrario. Ultima considerazione: la scritta “10 ball bearings” stampata sulla carcassa. Vi lascio immaginare la qualità di tutta quella ferraglia propinata a meri fini di marketing, sempre ammesso che ci siano tutti. A ulteriore riprova che non servono grandi budget per prendere grandi pesci.

It’s a spread, ridiculous, silly and trivial fashion to take pictures with arms stretched out and the fish pointed towards the camera lens; similar photos you can see quite a lot of both in magazines and on the web. And is also a little fraud: make the fish bigger than it is in reality, taking advantage of the perspective effect in a short focal length. What you see, is the real size of a chub of over two kilograms (too large to be handle with one hand).

È una moda diffusa quanto ridicola, insulsa e banale quella di scattare fotografie con le braccia allungate e il pesce puntato verso l’obiettivo della fotocamera, quasi a voler infilarcelo di forza; di foto simili se ne vedono ancora parecchie sia sulle riviste che sul web. Ed pure parecchio trufaldina: ha lo scopo di voler far sembrare la cattura più grande di quello che è nella realtà sfruttando l’effetto prospettico in una focale corta. Quelle che vedete sono le dimensioni reali di un cavedano di oltre due chili (troppo grande per essere sollevato con una sola mano senza il rishio di arrecargli danni).

There are no more sticky maggots to throw into the water. The eleventh and last fish of the day had proved to be something different since the first tail shots: Mauro, like many other fishermen, does not appreciate this non-native no-combative species from continental Europe.

Non ci sono più bigattini incollati da gettare in acqua, e senza benzina finiscono anche i cavedani. L’undicesimo e ultimo pesce della giornata aveva dimostrato di essere qualcosa di diverso sin dai primi colpi di coda: Mauro, come molti altri pescatori, non apprezza questa specie alloctona poco combattiva che viene dall’Europa continentale.

Once hooked, breams tend to defend itself using its own weight and the current force, so are not a great opponent. Here in north east are called ‘pans’.

Una volta allamate tendono a difendersi sfruttando il proprio peso e la forza della corrente, non un grande avversario quindi. Da queste parti vengono soprannominate ‘padelle’.

Now they are here and you can fish them, although with not the same satisfaction of northern European anglers. A close-up also to this bream.

Ormai ci sono e si pescano pure loro, anche se non con la stessa soddisfazione dei pescatori nordeuropei. E allora dedichiamo un primo piano anche a questa breme.

Mauro usually starts the fishing session with the hook that touch on the bottom because fish are less suspicious, then he changes several times the float’s position on the line, up to fully support the leader on the bottom when the fishing gets tough. Avoid an exasperated retention is the first commandment: we’re not fishing carp and crucian. The line must be allowed to flow, slowing it down only for a few seconds; stop and go induce the bait lifting and will come back down to the bottom after release. Many attacks occur in this phase, when the fish sees the bait back down on his nose. Remember one thing: the chub are never too far away from where sticky maggots are, so this makes a nonsense to open the reel bail to extend the action over a certain limit.

Mauro di solito parte con un terminale a sfiorare il fondo perché all’inizio i pesci sono meno sospettosi, per poi variare in corsa l’altezza del segnalatore; durante la stessa battuta può arrivare a modificare più volte la sua posizione sulla lenza, fino ad appoggiare completamente il terminale quando la pesca si fa difficile. Evitare una trattenuta esasperata è il primo comandamento: non stiamo pescando carpe e carassi. La lenza va lasciata scorrere, rallentandola solo per brevi istanti; lo stop and go provoca il sollevamento dell’esca, che tornerà a scendere verso il fondo dopo il rilascio. Molti attacchi avvengono proprio in questa fase, quando il pesce vede l’esca tornare a scendergli sul naso. Ricordatevi una cosa: i cavedani non sono mai troppo lontani dal punto in cui si trovano i bigattini incollati, per questo poco senso aprire l’archetto del mulinello per prolungare la passata oltre un certo limite.

Photographing own catches is not simple as it may appear. First you need to prevent animals from coming into contact with the ground, or even worse with sand or clay: damage their coating of mucus means exposing them to diseases. If you think a shot like this is well done, then you are thinking wrong. The fish are randomly placed and the muddy water due to the lifted sediment downgrade a river like Sile as a simple canal. I pesci sono posizionati casualmente e l’acqua intorbidita dai sedimenti fa declassare un fiume come il Sile a canalaccio di bassa pianura. In questa foto tutto è sbagliato.

The flat surface of a platform, like the bank, is ideal to position the fish. But we must be careful to put the keepnet under the landing net head, avoiding direct contact beetwen animals and metal, or other surfaces that can hurt them. Also because they are strong and uncooperative.

La superficie piana di una pedana, al pari della sponda, è ideale per posizionare i pesci. Bisogna però avere l’accortezza di posizionarci sotto la nassa raccolta a fisarmonica, evitando agli animali il contatto diretto con il metallo o altre superfici in grado di ferirli. Anche perché sono animali forti e a collaborare non ci pensano proprio.

Let them vent for a few seconds: they feel preyed and is normal for them squirm in a desperate attempt to regain their freedom.

Once calm, wet your hands and put the best ones towards the camera lens. Heal the focus and hurry to shoot, because the right moment lasts only a few seconds. This is the result you have to obtain, and I would say it has a completely different appeal than the first picture.

There are two kinds of photographers: those who have known the film, and everyone else. The Nikon Df is a jewel entirely dedicated to the first type, and you can guess it also by a feature not appreciated at first, careless glance.

Esistono due tipi di fotografi: quelli che hanno scattato con la pellicola, e poi tutti gli altri. La Nikon Df è un gioiello di tecnologia dedicato interamente al primo tipo, e lo si può intuire anche da una peculiarità non apprezzabile a un primo, sbadato colpo d’occhio.

On his back there’s not the red button dedicated to the video function: the Df is a camera at 100%. It’s not a trivial matter: put on the market a digital SLR (single lens reflex) without the video feature, a feature that is fashionable and highly requested by users, is a choice apparently uneconomical, and even risky from a business perspective. Has Nikon become crazy? There are two answers. The first one is: no, Nikon didn’t go out of mind and a such choice is possible just because its name is Nikon (but also thanks to the MITI, the powerful ministry of the Japanese industry). In SLR, the instant return mirror produces the well-known metallic noise after shooting, a noise you hear in many movies and is even imitated as sound effect in other devices: compact cameras, mobile phones and tablets. But there’s a story behind the patent for the instant return mirror of the SLR, a story that few people know.

Sul suo dorso non è presente il pulsantino rosso dedicato alla funzione video: la Df è una macchina fotografica al 100%. Non è cosa da poco: porre sul mercato nel 2013 una digital reflex priva della funzione video, ovvero una caratteristica alla moda e altamente richiesta dagli utenti comuni, è una scelta apparentemente antieconomica, e pure azzardata dal punto di vista aziendale. Che alla Nikon siano impazziti?Ci sono due risposte: la prima è che no, alla Nikon non sono andati fuori di testa e una simile scelta se la può permettere proprio perché si chiama Nikon (ma anche per merito del MITI, il potente ministero dell’industria giapponese). Nelle reflex, il ritorno istantaneo dello specchio dopo lo scatto produce quel rumore metallico ben noto che sentite anche in molti film e che viene imitato a livello di effetto sonoro da altri apparecchi come compatte, cellulari e tablet. Ma c’è una storia dietro al brevetto del ritorno istantaneo dello specchio delle reflex, una storia che pochi conoscono.

Pentax has been to invent the instant return mirror system in the way we know, but encountered great difficulties in Japan due to a patent of a similar but less effective project registered by another producer. Then Pentax tried to patent it in the U.S., but a few months before reached the approval, in June 1959 Nikon marketed the F model equipped with the Pentax’s mirror system. Mr. Saburo Matsumoto, chairman of Asahi Pentax, sent an official letter of protest to Nikon demanding the recognition of the patent. Situation was boiling: a small company had invented an exceptionally efficient system able to take flight the entire Japanese photographic industry, a thing that would have been hindered by that patent. It was for this reason that the MITI intervened, who decided to sacrifice Pentax forcing her to assign the rights at symbolic prices before to Nikon, then to all the other manufacturers. Has to reflect as a decision imposed out the rules of the market can distort the fate of entire industrial groups. Thanks to that state aid, Nikon and Canon have become global giants, while Pentax never recovered by that wrong, ending dismembered in its industrial assets and today downgraded to simple brand of another company. If you want to understand how far you push the humiliation of a historic brand of photography, you can just read the word written below the K3‘s back display. It’s as if one day, cuddling your new Daiwa roubaisenne comfortably sitting in your prefered armchair, you find the words “made in Shimano” on the back. Really a very sad thing.

Fu Pentax ad inventare il ritorno estantaneo dello specchio nel modo in cui lo conosciamo, ma incontrò grosse difficoltà a brevettarlo in patria a causa di un’invenzione simile (ma meno efficace) registrata da un altro produttore. Allora Pentax tentò di brevettarlo negli USA, ma qualche mese prima che giungesse l’approvazione, nel giugno 1959 Nikon introdusse sul mercato il suo modello F dotato proprio del sistema di specchio Pentax. Il signor Saburo Matsumoto, l’allora presidente della Asahi Pentax, inviò una lettera ufficiale di protesta alla Nikon pretendendo il riconoscimento del brevetto. La situazione era bollente: una piccola azienda aveva inventato un sistema eccezionalmente efficace in grado di far spiccare il volo all’intera industria fotografica giapponese, una cosa che invece sarebbe stata impedita proprio da quel brevetto. Fu per tale ragione che intervenne il MITI, il quale decise di sacrificare Pentax obbligandola a cedere i diritti sull’invenzione a prezzi simbolici prima propio a Nikon, poi a tutti gli altri costruttori. Deve far riflettere come una decisione imposta al di fuori delle regole del mercato possa stravolgere il destino di interi gruppi industriali. Grazie a quell’aiuto di stato, Nikon e Canon sono diventate colossi incontrastabili mentre Pentax non si riprese mai dal torto subito, finendo smembrata nei suoi assets industriali e oggi declassata a semplice marchio di un altra azienda. Se volete capire fino a che punto si è spinta l’umiliazione di uno storico brand della fotografia, vi basterà leggere la parola scritta sotto il display posteriore della K3, ultima nata della ex azienda di Tokio. È come se un giorno, coccolando la vostra nuova roubaisenne Daiwa comodamente seduti sulla poltrona di casa vostra, vi accorgeste che sul retro capeggia la scritta “made in Shimano”. Davvero una cosa molto triste.

Now you know that some unconventional choices can only be proposed by those who have the name and the commercial strength to impose them, but there’s something more. The second reason why today you can offer a high-end digital SLR without video function, you can seize by looking at the picture above, in which Df is portrayed next to the notorious F model of 1959.

Ora sapete che certe scelte controcorrente posso essere proposte solo da chi ha il nome e la forza commerciale per poterle imporre, ma c’è qualcosa di più. Il secondo motivo per cui oggi si può proporre una reflex di alta fascia senza funzione video lo potete cogliere voi stessi osservando la foto sopra, nella quale la Df è ritratta accanto alla famigerata F del 1959.

This model was created to a well identified target: professional photographers and amateurs who use the camera to create images. No one doubts the convenience of a technology that can produce movies if necessary by pressing the little red button, but honestly, and I speak as amateur photographer, during this life I haven’t felt the need to make one video.

Questo modello nasce per un target ben identificato: fotografi professionisti e amatori che usano la macchina fotografica per creare immagini. Nessuno mette in dubbio la comodità di una tecnologia in grado di produrre filmati premendo all’occorrenza il pulsantino rosso, ma sinceramente, e parlo da fotografo appassionato, durante questa esistenza non ho ancora sentito il bisogno di realizzare un solo video.

This isn’t a trivial matter: photography and video are different things, with only a few rules in common. Video filming requires many more variables to be monitored, so that a decent photographer may not be able to make decent videos. This is the reason why You Tube is literally clogged with shoddy products made by unsuspecting SLR, all cameras handled by the mass of ordinary users.

Anche questa non è una cosa da poco: fotografia e video sono mondi diversi, con solo poche regole in comune. Il video richiede molte più variabili da tenere sotto controllo, onde per cui chi fotografa decentemente non è detto che sappia realizzare altrettanto decentemente dei video godibili. Questo è il motivo per cui You Tube è letteralmente intasata da prodotti scadenti realizzati da reflex insospettabili, reflex maneggiate dalla massa degli utenti comuni.

As for me, I admit it candidly: my Alpha 700 doesn’t have the red button, so she put me away from unhealthy temptations. Even for this reason I love a lot my dear Sony. The Df also has a small record: is the first SLR in retro style. Not an absolute novelty, since both Olympus and Fujifilm have in their catalog products in sixties and seventies style, but no one had ventured to do the same with a SLR till now, even more full frame. It is an important thing? If a site like Canon Rumors has bothered to dedicate a post to her, the answer can only be: yes.

Per quanto mi riguarda, lo ammetto candidamente: la mia Alpha 700 non dispone del pulsantino rosso, cosa che mi ha messo al riparo da malsane tentazioni. Anche solo per questo devo tantissimo alla mia Sony. La Nikon Df ha anche un piccolo record: è la prima reflex in stile retrò. Non una novità assoluta, giacché sia Olympus che Fujifilm hanno in catalogo prodotti dalle linee anni sessanta-settanta, ma nessuno finora si era azzardato a fare altrettanto con una reflex, tanto più full frame. È questa una cosa così importante? Se un sito come Canon Rumors si è preso la briga di dedicarle un post, la risposta non può che essere affermativa.

Price: $3,000 for the camera body with the 50 mm special edition lens represent a clear indication that it isn’t an object for the mass of ordinary users, as well as the rest of its features let you imagine. Df ‘s body is weather sealed, proof of dust and moisture (but be careful: it sealed doesn’t mean underwater!). The yellow lines you see in the picture above show the seals placed to guard to the sensitive points, a feature to be considered standard for camera bodies with a cost over thousand euro.

Il prezzo: 3.000 dollari per il corpo macchina più l’obiettivo da 50 mm in edizione speciale rappresentano una chiara indicazione di quanto essa non sia un oggetto destinato alla massa degli utenti comuni, come pure il resto delle sue caratteristiche lasciano intuire. Il corpo della Df è tropicalizzato, ovvero a prova di polvere e umidità (ma attenzione: tropicalizzato non significa subacqueo!). Le linee gialle che vedete nella foto sopra indicano le guarnizioni poste a guardia dei punti sensibili, una caratteristica da considerare standard per corpi macchina dal costo superiore ai mille euro.

Another point of merit: the sensor. There are two important features that concern the light-sensitive element, two characteristics which are intimately related: size and quantity of pixels. ‘Big sensor, best quality‘, is the second most important thing that you have to think when you’ll be in front of a shop window with compact cameras, amateur SLR and professional SRL (the first thing concern the optical elements, but now we don’t care). In all three classes of devices exhibited in that window you could see printed ’16 MP’ on the camera’s body (it means 16 million of pixels), an absolute value that hides a trap just as absolute.

Altro punto di pregio: il sensore. Sono due le caratteristiche importanti che riguardano l’elemento sensibile alla luce, due caratteristiche tra loro intimamente correlate: le sue dimensioni e la quantità di pixel in esso stipati. ‘Grande sensore, qualità migliore’, è la seconda cosa più importante a cui dovrete pensare quando vi troverete davanti a una vetrina con esposte fotocamere compatte, reflex amatoriali e reflex professionali (la prima riguarda gli elementi ottici, ma adesso non ci interessano). In tutte e tre le classi di apparecchi fotografici esposti in quella vetrina potreste vedere stampati sul corpo macchina la dicitura 16 MP (16 milioni di pixel), un valore assoluto che nasconde un’insidia altrettanto assoluta.

This photo is interesting for two reasons. The first one: the raised mirror in both SLR allows to compare the two types of sensor (a FF on the medium-high class D600 and an APS-C on the economic D3200, both with 24 MP). The second interesting thing concerns a serious manufacturing defect: introduced in the market in 2012, many users have complained that the D600′s shutter soil the sensor with micro drops of lubricant. Rumors spread by some mischievous canonian, or something founded? Nikon’s answer was the presentation of the D610 a few months ago, basically the same model with a new shutter. To understand the gravity of the thing, try to think of a €2,000 pole, produced in thousands, whose first five pieces get detached from the rest of the pole by the pull of a crucian. After the initial shock of seeing your rod floating into the lake, you decide to fit another kit in and… even this one greets you. Something very serious. If someone will propose you the purchase of a D600 at a great price, well, be careful: it’s appropriate to think that in this world nobody presents anything to nobody (this camera is a huge pain in the ass, litterally!).

Questa foto è interessante per due motivi. Il primo: lo specchio sollevato di entrambe le reflex permette di confrontare i due tipi di sensore (un FF sulla D600 di classe medio-alta, e un APS-C sulla economica D3200; entrambi hanno 24 MP). La seconda cosa interessante riguarda un grave difetto di fabbrica: introdotta sul mercato nel corso del 2012, molti utenti hanno lamentato il fatto che l’otturatore della D600 sporca il sensore con microgocce di lubrificante. Voci messe in giro da qualche canonista dispettoso, oppure qualcosa di fondato? La risposta di Nikon è stata la presentazione pochi mesi fa della D610, in pratica lo stesso modello dotato di un nuovo otturatore. Per capire la gravità della cosa, provate a pensare a una roubaisienne da 2000 euro prodotta in migliaia di esemplari, i cui primi cinque pezzi si staccano dal resto della canna sotto la trazione di un carassio. Dopo lo shock iniziale di vedere la vostra punta portata a spasso per il lago, decidete di inserire un altro kit e… anche questo vi saluta. Una cosa decisamente grave. Se mai vi proporranno l’acquisto di una D600 a un prezzo eccezionale, beh, è proprio il caso di pensare che a questo mondo nessuno regala niente a nessuno.

If in your life you happened to pick up in hand a slide or a developed negative, the speech I will do is easier to understand. In photography (and also in video) is called ‘full frame’ the sensor who has the same size of the film frame (36×24 mm, on the left in the photo above), and FF (full frame) is considered the standard in professional photographic equipment. It is expensive to produce (so they say) and therefore finds place only within a certain price range; it starts from a minimum of € 2000 for the only body of a Canon 6D or a Nikon D610. A step below that’s the so-called APS-C (circa 24×16 mm): smaller, easier and cheaper to produce than the FF (so they say) and therefore it can be found on 90% of SLR on the market. About APS-C prices, you can find basic models such as Canon 700D, Nikon D3200, Pentax K500 at around €600 (all accompanied by economic as well as very valid standard zoom).

Se in vita vostra vi è capitato di prendere in mano una diapositiva o un negativo sviluppato, il discorso che sto per fare vi sarà sicuramente più semplice da comprendere. In fotografia (e nel settore video) si definisce ‘full frame’ un sensore che ha le stesse dimensioni del fotogramma della pellicola (36×24 mm, quello a sinistra nella foto sopra), e il FF (full frame) è considerato lo standard degli apparecchi fotografici professionali. È costoso da produrre (così dicono) e pertanto trova posto solo all’interno di una certa fascia di prezzo; diciamo che si parte da un minimo di 2000 euro solo corpo per la Canon 6D e la Nikon D610. Un gradino più sotto si trova il cosiddetto l’APS-C (circa 24×16 mm), più piccolo, più facile ed economico da produrre rispetto al FF (così dicono) e pertanto lo si trova sul 90% delle reflex in commercio. Per quanto riguarda l’APS-C si parte con prodotti economici come la Canon 700D, la Nikon D3200, la Pentax K500 (tutte rigorosamente corredate di economici quanto validissimi zoom standard).

The digital compact cameras’ sensors are even smaller than the APS-C ones, whose dimensions are generally given in inch fractions. Another golden rule to keep in mind: big pixel, better quality (leaving out the optical elements, even more important than the sensor for the final result). You can consider the pixel as the smallest unit on the sensor’s surface having the function of capturing the light signal. Now, sensors of different sizes filled with the same number of pixels provide a different image quality, but why this happens? Because the pixels’ ability to capture the light depend on their physical dimensions: largest pixel, best pixel (another golden rule). The 16 million pixels of an APS-C sensor will have a few more problems to capture images in less than optimal lighting conditions compared to those of a FF (being these largest), while problems will be gigantic for the 16 million pixels crammed against their will in a sensor large 2/3 of an inch. The 16 MP which I used in this example are not random: you can consider the maximum advisable for a APS-C sensor (by far the most common in digitla SLR), while 24 MP are about for the FF. Beyond these thresholds, we leave the photographic logic to enter into the reign of Marketing and of its perverse laws.

Sulle cosiddette ‘compatte digitali’ vengono montati sensori ancora più piccoli dell’APS-C, le cui dimensioni sono indicate in frazioni di pollice. Altra regola d’oro da tenere a mente: pixel grande, migliore qualità (continuando a prescindere dagli elementi ottici, ancora più importanti ai fini del risultato finale). Potete considerare il pixel come la piccola unità presente sulla superficie del sensore avente la funzione di captare il segnale luminoso. Ora, sensori di diverse dimensioni riempiti dello stesso numero di pixel offrono una qualità d’immagine differente; ma perché avviene questo? Perché la capacità dei pixel di captare la luce dipende dalle loro dimensioni fisiche: pixel grande, pixel migliore (altra regola d’oro). I 16 milioni di pixel di un sensore APS-C avranno qualche problema in più a captare le immagini in condizioni di luce non ottimale rispetto a quelli di un FF (essendo questi più grandi), mentre i problemi si faranno giganteschi per i 16 milioni di pixel stipati contro voglia in un sensore da 2/3 di pollice. I 16 MP che ho usato in questo esempio non sono casuali: potete considerarlo il limite massimo consigliabile per un sensore APS-C (in assoluto il più diffuso nelle reflex), mentre 24 MP lo sono per quello FF. Oltre queste soglie si abbandona la logica fotografica per entrare nel regno del Marketing e delle sue leggi talvolta perverse.

If you think that this photo looks incoherent with the Nikon Df, you’re right: the ones you see are a mobile phone and a Canon EOS 5D (Mark II or III). I decided to put it in the article because is significant and allows me to reinforce a concept: this two devices are both able to take pictures, obviously with different qualitative characteristics. In this example differences in size between the sensors are extreme, as are the optics too.

Se pensate che questa foto sembri fuori tema e non centri nulla con la Df, avete ragione: quelli che vedete sono un cellulare e una Canon EOS 5D (Mark II oppure III). Ho deciso di inserirla nell’articolo perché è comunque significativa e mi permette di rafforzare un concetto: quelli che vedete sono due apparecchi in grado di scattare foto, con caratteristiche qualitative evidentemente diverse. In questo esempio le differenze di dimensioni tra i sensori sono estreme, così come lo sono le ottiche.

Keep in mind something else: sensors clogged up in pixels produce exacting files hard to manage even by recent computer and fill many memory on the hard disk; I’m referring to recent amateur SLR cameras with 24 MP APS-C sensors which are invading the stores (any reference to the Nikon D3200, D5200, D5300, D7100 or to the various Sony Alpha is not casual). Personally, I would have no hesitation in choosing between an ‘old ‘ Nikon D7000 (16 MP, APS-C) and the new D7100 (24 MP, APS-C), or between the ‘old’ D700 (FF, 12 MP) and the new D800 (FF, 36 MP). Now, be careful: a €50 compact camera into the hands of a real professional photographer will create flawless images, at the same way a hundred times more expensive super-professional reflex will produce unspeakable crap when used by those who don’t even know on which planet they live. It’s not the sensor size or the number of MP to make the difference between a perfect image and a rude click, but the mind of those who use the device.

Tenete presente anche un’altra cosa: sensori oberati di pixel producono file impegnativi da gestire per computer anche solo con qualche anno alle spalle, oltre a occupare molta memoria sull’hard disk; con questo mi riferisco a reflex amatoriali con sensori APS-C da 24 MP che da qualche tempo stanno invadendo gli scaffali dei negozi reali o virtuali che siano (ogni riferimento alle Nikon D3200, D5200, D5300, D7100 o alle varie Sony Alpha di pari segmento sono puramente voluti). Personalmente, non avrei esitazioni nella scelta tra una ‘vecchia’ Nikon D7000 (APS-C da 16 MP) e la nuova D7100 (APS-C da 24 MP), oppure tra la ‘vecchia’ D700 (FF da 12 MP) e la nuova D800 (FF da 36 MP). Ora fate attenzione: una compattina da 50 euro nelle mani di un professionista degno di questo nome creerà immagini ineccepibili, allo stesso modo in cui una superprofessionale cento volte più costosa produrrà schifezze inenarrabili quando usata da chi non sa nemmeno su quale pianeta vive. Non è la dimensione del sensore o il numero di MP a fare la differenza tra un’immagine perfetta e un click scabroso, ma quello che c’è dentro la testa di chi usa l’apparecchio.

If you’re planning to buy an amateur SLR, there are three tips that I can tell you: first of all avoid let yourself be seduced by the amazing descriptions served up by salesman, all the even more so when they fall repeatedly on the amazing MP contained in the sensor of last generation. Second tip: don’t discard used equipment. Digital photography reflects the same attitude of the products with high technological content: a fierce devaluation. Unlike what happened in the days of film, at the time of the digital photography will not be hard to find higher-end products at excellent prices. Just contact for proven reliability retailers who offer equipment with the sensor already cleaned (you will not have to do this operation: considered the costs of replacement, an used SLR with the scratched sensor is equivalent to an original paperweight and nothing more). Third and last tip: try to find interest for this wonderful hobby. Photography can give great satisfactions, plus it helps you to see the world with different eyes.

Se siete intenzionati ad acquistare una reflex di fascia amatoriale, sono tre i consigli che mi sento di darvi: anzitutto evitate di lasciarvi sedurre dalle mirabolanti descrizioni propinate dal commesso, tanto più quando queste cadranno ripetutamente sui mirabolanti MP contenuti nel sensore di ultima generazione. Secondo consiglio: non scartate a priori il mercato dell’usato. La fotografia digitale sconta la stessa attitudine dei prodotti ad alto contenuto tecnologico: una svalutazione feroce. A differenza di quanto avveniva ai tempi della pellicola, ai tempi del digitale non sarà difficile trovare prodotti di fascia superiore a prezzi sorprendenti. Solo cercate di rivolgervi a negozianti di provata affidabilità che offrono apparecchi con il sensore già pulito (operazione che in nessun caso dovrete fare voi: considerati i costi della sostituzione, una reflex usata con sensore graffiato equivale ad un originale fermacarte e nulla più). Terzo e ultimo consiglio: cercate di interessarvi a questo meravigliosa passione. La fotografia sa regalare soddisfazioni impagabili, e in più aiuta a vedere il mondo con occhi diversi dai comuni mortali.

The new Nikon’s gem has a FF 16 MP sensor, the same as the professional D4 (producted by Sony, unlike Canon and Fujifilm that produce sensors by themselves). Together with the 18 MP Canon 1D -X, today it represents the maximum for the vast majority of common uses, with size of individual pixels that ensure absolute quality results even at medium-high sensitivity (to be set when the light is low or need a fast shutter speed).

Assieme al 18 MP della Canon 1D-X, oggi rappresenta il massimo per la stragrande maggioranza degli usi comuni, con dimensioni dei singoli pixel tali da garantire un’assoluta qualità di risultati anche alle medio-alte sensibilità (da impostare quando la luce è scarsa o serve un tempo di scatto veloce).

This is an action that has not been seen since the days of mechanical SLR (and of the film): the time selection on the dedicated dial. Before the electronic invaded the world of photography, causing the flourishing of all sorts of buttons, were actions like these that allowed to set up the cameras. And doing it, the rings generated a distinctive sound, unique to each model, something you can appreciate in this video.

Questa è un’azione che non si vedeva dai tempi delle reflex meccaniche (e della pellicola): la selezione dei tempi sulla ghiera dedicata. Prima che l’elettronica invadesse il mondo della fotografia provocando il fiorire di ogni sorta di pulsante, erano azioni come queste che permettevano di impostare l’apparecchio. E nel farlo generavano un suono inconfondibile, unico per ogni modello, qualcosa che potete apprezzare in questo video.

The first time I saw this image about the Df ‘s top side, for a moment I thought about my old Pentax MZ-5N, the camera with which I learned to photograph. Starting with the manual setting dials, to the small monochrome display showing the only information that really serve to photographers during in his work: the shutter speed, the diaphragm’s aperture, the charge level of the battery and the number of shots available. Together with Df, Nikon has also introduced a Nikkor 50mm with the silver ring typical of its system. But don’t be fooled: despite of the retro look, this is a concentrate of technology as the camera body on which is mounted. Now notice the words under the double dial ISO sensitivity/exposure compensation… don’t give it for granted: it’s a feature you can only find on the best models.

La prima volta che ho visto questa ripresa della Df dall’alto, per un istante ho pensato alla mia vecchia Pentax MZ-5N, la reflex con cui ho imparato a fotografare. A cominciare dalle ghiere manuali, per finire al piccolo display monocromatico riportante le uniche informazioni che davvero servono al fotografo intento nel suo lavoro: la velocità di scatto, l’apertura del diaframma, il livello di carica della batteria e il numero di scatti ancora disponibili. Assieme alla Df, Nikon ha presentato anche un Nikkor 50mm in edizione limitata e rifinito con l’anello argentato tipico delle ottiche AIS. Ma non fatevi ingannare: nonostante l’aspetto retrò è un concentrato di tecnologia al pari del corpo macchina su cui è montato. Notate la scritta posta sotto alla doppia ghiera della sensibilità ISO e della compensazione dell’esposizione… non date per scontato questo valore aggiunto: caratterizza solo i modelli migliori.

I downloaded these five images by the Nikon’s official website, and all were taken with the Df; if you are interested to the details, you have to download the original file. Now, I think it is clear how the quality of a photo depends primarily on the quality of the lens and then of the sensor. I would add at this point also the software which runs the device, placing it as the third in the list. Now the podium seems complete: on the top step is the lens, on the second one there’s the sensor and on third one the firmware. All wrong, things are not so. There are three other factors that determine the final quality of a photo, and are much more important than those described till now.

Ho scaricato queste cinque immagini dal sito ufficiale di Nikon, e sono state tutte scattate con la Df; se siete interessati a valutarne i dettagli, non dovete far altro che scaricare i file originali. Da quello che avete letto finora, credo vi sia chiaro di come la qualità di una foto dipenda in primo luogo dalla qualità dell’obiettivo e poi del sensore. Aggiungerei a questo punto anche il software che fa funzionare l’apparecchio, mettendolo come terzo nella lista. Ora il podio sembra completo: sul gradino più alto c’è l’obiettivo, sul secondo il sensore e sul terzo il firmware. Tutto sbagliato, le cose non stanno così. Ci sono altre tre fattori che determinano la qualità finale di una foto, e sono assai più importanti di quelli descritti finora.

‘Photography’ derives from the Greek words ‘φῶς‘ (light) and ‘γραφή‘ (drawing); it literally means ‘writing with light‘. It’s the good light that passes through the lens’ optical glasses, reach the sensor and that will be processed by the software in a good image file. Without the good light, no good photos. After a good light serves an interesting subjects: think about it, a lot of pictures that you see around are unattractive simply because they portray uninteresting subjects. Intuitive and trivial. But an interesting subject and a good light aren’t still enough: the big difference is made by the eyes that seize them. Here’s then the ideal podium to create a picture worthy of this name: on the first place there’s the photographer, second place for the interesting subject and then the light; everything else comes after. Moral of the story: the equipment does its part, but the pictures come first by the photographer’s eyes and mind.

‘Fotografia’ deriva dalle parole greche ‘phôs‘ (luce) e ‘graphè‘ (grafia); letteralmente significa ‘scrivere con la luce’. È la buona luce che passerà attraverso i vetri ottici dell’obiettivo, che raggiungerà il sensore e che verrà elaborata dal software in un buon file immagine. Senza la buona luce, niente buone fotografie. Dopo la buona luce serve un soggetto interessante: pensateci, tante foto che si vedono in giro sono poco interessanti semplicemente perché ritraggono soggetti poco interessanti. Intuitivo quanto banale. Ma un soggetto interessante e una buona luce che lo illumini non sono ancora sufficienti: la grande differenza è fatta da occhi capaci di cogliere entrambi. Ecco allora che sul podio ideale per realizzare una foto degna di questo nome: al primo posto troviamo il fotografo, poi il soggetto interessante e quindi la luce; tutto il resto viene dopo. Morale: l’attrezzatura fa la sua parte, ma le foto nascono prima dalla mente e dagli occhi dei fotografi.

The best conclusion: Nikon has made available two cases in black or brown leather with which to satisfy even the most nostalgic. Seen in this way, it seems that Df wants to be forgiven about the wrongs served up with the F and the D600.

I don’t know who’s this guy, but so young match anglers are a rarity in a expensive sport like angling competitions are (above all in Italy). Keep in mind that there’s no sports culture here and that in this country the concept of sport has become synonymous with soccer. If you don’t have any capital to invest, don’t want to make sacrifices, don’t have an iron determination and boundless passion, then high level fishing competitions aren’t for you.

One in four, 25%… not a great number. It reflects a holy truth in sport fishing, or that to strike a nice fish is just the beginning: you must also take it.

After the weighing operations I came back to Massola, pictured here with his heavy artillery. I don’t know the factory which produced the pole he used to catch the big carp, but it would not surprise me if it was imported from the east. The quality level achieved by Chinese manufacturers is indisputable, as well as reliability. Oriental products will not have the appeal of Daiwa or of a made in Reglass, but no matter: in sport fishing only the result matters.

Dopo le operazioni di pesatura sono tornato da Massola, qui ripreso con la sua artiglieria pesante. Non so da quale fabbrica sia uscito il modello con cui è riuscito a catturare la big carp, ma non mi stupirei se fosse di produzione orientale. Il livello qualitativo raggiunto oggi dai fabbricanti cinesi è indiscutibile, così come l’affidabilità. Non avranno l’appeal di una Daiwa o di un made in Reglass, ma poco importa: nella pesca conta solo il risultato.

Large carps are a target when after three hours you realize that you aren’t well placed, or when you have no alternative to a bad result. Massimiliano explained to me how important is to know the bottom, and to locate the best passage among aquatic plants: this will be the exact spot on which ball in three bowls of sticky maggots. These will need to be burdened with much gravel, although the current is moderate: baits must reach the select point, on the vertical of the pole, and the only way to achieve the effect is abound with gravel. After ten minutes (ten minutes and not more, because this animals clean up quickly the bottom…), not having any strike with the match rod, Massimiliano put four maggots on a Drennan hook number 8. The result you know.

Le grandi carpe sono un target a cui puntare quando dopo tre ore di gara ci si rende conto di non essere ben posizionati, o per dirla in un modo più schietto, quando non si hanno alternative ad un pessimo risultato. Massimiliano mi ha spiegato come sia importante l’attento sondaggio del fondo per individuare il corridoio migliore tra le piante acquatiche: quello sarà il punto esatto su cui scodellare tre bocce di bigattini incollati. Questi dovranno essere appesantiti con molta ghiaia, anche se la velocità della corrente è moderata: il richiamo deve raggiungere con precisione il punto stabilito, sulla verticale della canna, e l’unico modo per ottenere l’effetto è abbondare con la zavorra. Dopo dieci minuti dall’operazione (dieci minuti e non di più, perché simili animali ripuliscono velocemente il fondale…), non avendo avuto risultati con la pesca all’inglese, ha innescato quattro bigattini su un amo Drennan numero 8. Il risultato lo conoscete.

Fishing with flat floats, you’ll never see the tip sink: it will swing just a little, sign that is time for striking. The one used by Massimiliano is a Torpedo Cralusso, the favourite by many anglers for fishing in strong flows. Even though Mincio waters are slow in late season, many people still prefer the flat float respect the traditional ones. The reason is that line must stationed at the exact point in wich are the sticky maggots, without leaving the passage among the grasses. There will feed the carps. Now pay attention to this specimen because it has a peculiar feature, of which I had mentioned in the first article: the tip aligned with the drift. Although I didn’t ask him, customization is pretty obvious: you can see the original hole in top corner where the tip was inserted in factory. The new tip position allows a better management in still flows.

Pescando con i galleggianti piatti mai vedrete l’antenna affondare: essa sussurrerà appena, segno che è tempo di ferrare. Quello impiegato da Massimiliano è un Torpedo Cralusso di produzione ungherese, in assoluto il più utilizzato per la pesca nelle acque con fortissima corrente. Ma nel Mincio le acque a fine stagione quasi sempre sono lente, lentissime, e nonostante questo molti continuano a preferire la vela al galleggiante tradizionale. Il fatto è che bisogna stazionare nel punto esatto in cui sono finite le bocce di bigattini incollati, senza uscire dal corridosio tra le erbe del fondo. È lì che pascoleranno i pesci. Ora fate attenzione a questo esemplare, poiché ha una caratteristica peculiare di cui vi avevo accennato nel primo articolo dedicato a questo campionato italico: l’antenna in asse con la deriva. Anche se non gliel’ho chiesto, la personalizzazione è abbastanza evidente: si può notare il foro in alto sull’angono in cui l’antenna viene inserita in fabbrica. Quando posta in asse, essa permette una migliore gestione dell’azione in acque moderate.

Max’s line: main of 0.30 mm and leader of 0.25 mm. Diameters are commensurate with the expectations, and as far as the ballast, well, it’s similar to that one have used for decades by French and Belgian anglers on their lines, with a dry torpille instead of buckshots. Nothing creepy.

I diametri sono proporzionati alle aspettative, e per quanto riguarda la piombatura, beh, è molto simile a quella che per decenni hanno impiegato i pescatori francesi e belgi sulle loro lenze, quando inserivano una torpille secca al posto dei pallettoni. Nulla di scabroso.

Una curiosità: vi siete mai chiesti il motivo per cui le rappresentative italiane indossano una divisa di questo colore, dal quale prendono pure il nome di “azzurri”?

When I arrived at the place of the ceremony, I didn’t understand the meaning of these other prizes. I thought they were part of the Fipsas awards ceremony too, but it wasn’t so.

Daniele was not the only regret of this year: a thought goes also for Roberto Gagliardi, angler of Lenza Club Brezza, who die in June due to a heart attack. He was only 35 years old. Really a diffucult year.

Daniele non è stato l’unico rimpianto di questa stagione: un ricordo va anche a Roberto Gagliardi, garista della Lenza Club Brezza, che è venuto a mancare per un malore improvviso. Aveva solo 35 anni. Davvero un anno difficile.

A very common scene today along this river. Like many other contesters, also this angler prepared the double pole: one for traditional fishing to rudds and chubs, the other for big carps.

Una scena comune oggi lungo questo fiume. Come molti altri concorrenti, anche questo garista ha preparato la doppia roubaisienne: una per la pesca tradizionale alle scardole e ai cavedani, l’altra per le grosse carpe.

Franco Zucchi. Castelmaggiore is out of the game and honestly I see more fatigue than conviction in his eyes. Motivation is very different compared to three years ago, when in 2010 his team won the Italic title against all odds.

Busatto strikes a big fish on the pole. Even when you are fishing in the middle of the river, you have to sling maggots at the distance of 13 meters. A new trend is spreading in recent times, namely the use of hollow elastic with reduced diameter: compared to the traditional full structure, this variant offers greater tenacity and the fish seems to get tired in less time (employing a direct line of 0.10 mm). Here in Mincio great chubs must be left to vent holding high the pole.

Busatto ferra un grosso pesce sulla roubaisienne. Anche quando si pesca a centro fiume, è importante continuare a fiondare bigattini sulla distanza dei 13 metri. C’è una novità tecnica che si sta diffondendo in questi ultimi tempi, ovvero l’uso dell’elastico cavo di diametro ridotto: rispetto a alla tradizionale struttura piena, questa variante offre una maggiore tenacia e il pesce sembra stancarsi prima. Qui nel Mincio i grossi cavedani venivano lasciati sfogare a canna alta, spesso impiegando una lenza diretta dello 0.10. I grandi cavedani vanno lasciati sfogare tenendo alta la canna.

Unfortunately, the use of disgorger is delegated only to common sense, while it should be made obligatory for regulation. Also because inoffensive scenes like this can become gasoline in hands of an animalist fanaticism well rooted in Italy.

Quante volte gli ho detto di usare lo slamatore! Ed è pure ittiologo! Un accessorio straordinario, in grado si salvaguardare al tempo stesso sia l’integrità dell’animale che del filo in prossimità della legatura. Purtroppo l’uso dello slamatore è delegato solo al buon senso, mentre andrebbe reso obbligatorio per regolamento. Anche perché scene inoffensive come questa possono diventare benzina nelle mani di un certo fanatismo animalista ben radicato in Italia.

Before, however, I propose you this picture: it’s an EOS C100, the first one I see in work. It should be considered as a hybrid between the reflex and a video camera, and right in respect of this philosophy it’s able to fit EF lenses (photographic lenses); in particular, that one mounted for the occasion is the good Canon 24-105L. A single lens reflex has two great advantages compared to a video camera: the first one is the increased size of the sensor (the rule is: big sensor, better quality), the second one is the price (excellent for low budget productions). The quality of the video made with reflex was so impressive that someone started to use them to make advertising spots and movies: founder was the Canon EOS 5 Mk2, used for an episode of the television series House, M.D.

Sono due i grandi vantaggi offerti da una moderna reflex digitale rispetto a videocamere anche molto costose: il primo è la maggiore dimensione del sensore (la regola è: grande sensore, risultato migliore), il secondo sta proprio nel prezzo alla portata di qualsiasi produzione low budget. When the day after I showed these pictures to some friends, the first comment I heard was “indecent!”

Quando il giorno dopo la gara ho mostrato queste foto a degli amici, il primo commento che ho sentito pronunciare è stato: “indecente!”

The disapproval concerned about that in a extraordinary and technical match field as the Mincio at Peschiera is, it shouldn’t allow a carp fishing equipment such as those used to catch some fish, and that the technique used is a kind of feeder fishing with float. In my opinion a fish is always a fish, and fish such as these ones are pure spectacle. It would be more logical to talk about limitations of the leader’s diameter, rather than techniques to prohibit, or worse about invalid species in order of ranking.

La contrarietà riguardava il fatto che in un campo di gara straordinario come il Mincio a Peschiera del Garda non si dovesse permettere l’uso di attrezzature da carpfishing come quelle impiegate per puntare a certi pesci, e che la tecnica utilizzata è una sorta di pesca a fondo con il galleggiante. Per quel che mi riguarda un pesce è sempre un pesce, e pesci come questi sono spettacolo allo stato puro. Sarebbe più logico parlare di limitazioni sul diametro dei finali, piuttosto che di tecniche da bandire, o peggio ancora di spece non valide al fine della classifica.

The real aberration remains the penalty of a single species, as it was agreed at the 2011 World Championship of Ostellato, when Will Raison was obliged to release some little wels catfish. In my view, that was much more indecent: if really it was feared that someone mistook the World Championship for a session of catfishing, then was enough to impose limits on the end line diameters rather than penalize anglers.

La vera aberrazione resta comunque la penalizzazione della una singola specie, come venne deciso in occasione del mondiale 2011 di Ostellato, evento in cui Will Raison si vide decurtato di alcuni silurotti. A mio modo di vedere, quello fu un fatto molto più indecente: se davvero si temeva che qualcuno scambiasse una prova del campionato del mondo di pesca al colpo per una sessione di catfishing, allora bastava imporre limiti sui diametri dei finali anziché penalizzare singoli garisti.

Ma c’è dell’altro: confesso che fino all’ultimo istante questa di Massimiliano era la foto che avevo deciso di usare come immagine in evidenza nella homepage del sito, sennonché mi sono ricordato di un’altra situazione.

Exceptional catches are not a rarity during the final match of the Italic championships: last year, just on this bank, Matteo Crepaldi (River Club Padova, today winner in his section with 7.650 kg) caught an amazing common of more than 11 kg, while in 2009 edition Marco Corazza (Lenza Emiliana) netted a superb walleye of 8.800 kg from the Ostellato waters (while he was fishing bream).

Catture eccezionali non sono una rarità nelle finali dei campionati italici: lo scorso anno, proprio su questa sponda, Matteo Crepaldi (River Club, oggi vincitore nel suo settore con 7,650 kg) ne catturò una di oltre 11 kg, mentre nell’edizione 2009 Marco Corazza (Lenza Emiliana) salpò una superba sandra di 8.800 kg dalle acque di Ostellato (mentre pescava bréme).

Dubito che nell’occasione José avesse usato elastici cavi e terminali da carpfishing sulla sua roubaisienne 95RS Interget di Julia Rod (Italica), ad ogni modo questa è una cosa che dovete tenere ben presente: se avete in programma di disputare un campionato del mondo in acque italiche, conviene che vi prepariate all’incontro con prede extra-large. Anche se non sarà sufficiente per diventare campioni, almeno vi resterà un meraviglioso ricordo.

Sunday, 13 October 2013: final round of the Italic match fishing championship. I thought of spending a quiet weekend culminating in a report of a match full of catches, and instead the problems started since the previous day.

Domenica 13 ottobre 2013: ultima prova del campionato italico di pesca al colpo. Credevo di trascorrere un tranquillo weekend culminante con il report di quella che nelle previsioni doveva essere una gara ricca di catture, e invece i problemi sono cominciati sin dal giorno precedente.

Even though I live in the northeast of the peninsula in an area considered well-off, I can assure you that many things work here as bad as the rest of the country. Starting with Internet connections. There’s no broadband in the area where I live and this  because Italiot Telecom decided that is economically attractive wiring only urban centers: for everyone else better to focus to the USB drives business, wich is much more profitable than the wire.

Anche se abito nel nord est della penisola in una zona considerata benestante, vi posso assicurare che qui molte cose funzionano male come nel resto del paese. A cominciare dalle connessioni a Internet. Non esiste la banda larga nella zona in cui vivo e questo perché la Telecom italiota ha deciso che è economicamente interessante il cablaggio dei soli centri cittadini: per gli altri meglio puntare sulle chiavette USB, un business decisamente più proficuo.

Too bad that the USB drives are slow, unstable and, to be honest all the way, represent a huge fraud. The news of these weeks is the next acquisition of Italiot Telecom by a Spanish company, an operation that has raised a lot of controversy and concerns. Italy is really a strange country, unable even to protect its national strategic interests as the ownership of the communications network.

Peccato che le chiavette USB sono lente, instabili e, a dirla tutta fino in fondo, rappresentano una grandissima truffa. È notizia di queste settimane l’ormai scontata acquisizione della Telecom italiota da parte di una società spagnola, operazione che ha sollevato un sacco di polemiche e preoccupazioni. L’Italia è davvero uno strano paese, incapace perfino di tutelare il propri interessi nazionali strategici come la proprietà della rete di comunicazioni.

Italiot politicians define the unfinished spread of fast Internet connection with an English expression much in vogue: digital divide, although they should call it by a single alphabet letter: V (for vergogna). The only way I can have a Internet connection is to use the wireless network in the library of a town a few kilometers away to where I live. Better this than nothing. On Saturday afternoon I went in that library to update my little site with the lastest article about the World Pairs Angling Competition, but I couldn’t: as is now a habit, the connection was unstable and it was losing constantly the work done up to that moment. Really intolerable.

I politici italioti definiscono l’incompiuta diffusione della connessione veloce a Internet con un termine inglese molto di moda: digital divide, anche se farebbero meglio a chiamarla con una sola lettera dell’alfabeto: V (come vergogna). L’unico modo che ho per connettermi a Internet è quello di sfruttare la rete wireless della biblioteca di un paese distante alcuni chilometri quello in cui abito. Meglio questo di niente. Il sabato pomeriggio prima della gara mi sono recato in quella biblioteca per aggiornare il mio modesto sito con l’ultimo articolo sul World Pairs Angling Competition, ma non ci sono riuscito: come ormai capita sempre più spesso, la linea era instabile e faceva perdere costantemente il lavoro svolto fino a quel momento. Davvero intollerabile.

The car journey to Peschiera del Garda would cost me more than €80, while by train just €20. A big saving, no doubt, considering that the famous match field along the river Mincio is only a walk of 15 minutes from the train station. Peschiera del Garda is located on the southern edge of the largest Italian lake, the Garda lake, halfway between Venice and Milan. It’s easy and quick to reach, even for Italian trains which are slow, dirty, noisy and constantly late.

Il viaggio in auto fino a Peschiera del Garda mi sarebbe costato oltre ottanta euro, mentre in treno appena venti euro. Un bel risparmio, non c’è dubbio, considerato anche che il celebre campo di gara lungo il fiume Mincio dista solo una passeggiata di un quarto d’ora dalla stazione ferroviaria. Peschiera del Garda si trova sul margine meridionale del più grande lago italico, il Garda, a metà strada tra Venezia e Milano. È piuttosto facile e veloce da raggiungere, anche per i treni italiani che sono lenti, sporchi, rumorosi e costantemente in ritardo.

Sunday morning I was on time to take the train of 4:37 which would allow me to be in place less than three hours later. The train of 4:37 never arrived: it was canceled without any reason, so I had to wait an hour to get another one wich has required an expensive supplement. I couldn’t get a credible explanation for the cancellation, but the reason is pretty easy to guess: there were not enough passengers to justify the trip. Usually these things happen with air travel, but it seems the habit has been extended to the railways. It’s a fraudulent was to make money: keep it in mind if you decide to come in Italy.

Domenica mattina mi presento puntuale per prendere il treno delle 4:37 che mi avrebbe permesso di essere sul posto meno di tre ore più tardi. Il treno delle 4:37 non è mai arrivato: è stato cancellato senza alcun motivo, sicché ho dovuto attendere un’ora per prenderne un altro che però richiedeva un costoso supplemento di prezzo. Non sono riuscito a ottenere una spiegazione credibile per quella cancellazione, ma il motivo è piuttosto facile da intuire: non vi erano abbastanza utenti per giustificare la corsa. Di solito queste cose accadono con i viaggi aerei, ma a quanto pare il costume si è esteso anche alle strade ferrate. È uno dei tanti modi truffaldini studiati per fare cassa: tenetelo presente se deciderete di venire in Italia.

It’s eight o’clock on a Sunday morning and the shop is already open since an hour and a half.

Sono le otto di domenica mattina e il negozio è già aperto da un’ora e mezza.

Mr Danzi with a customer. Speaking with him for a few minutes, he explained to me that the shop was open in 1961 by his father-in-law, and that until twenty years ago in  summer was packed with people on weekends. Today things have changed a lot.

Il signor Danzi con un cliente. Parlandoci per qualche minuto, mi ha spiegato come il suo esercizio abbia iniziato l’attività commerciale nel 1961 per opera del suocero, e che fino a vent’anni fa in piena stagione estiva il negozio fosse sempre pieno di gente durante i fine settimana. Oggi le cose sono molto cambiate.

River Mincio gets out from Garda lake with three branches, the most eastern of which flows in front of Mr Danzi’s shop. What you see in the background is the famous fortress of Peschiera del Garda and a few meters beyond, around the corner, there’s one of the three point where Mincio arose from the lake. People don’t normally think about it, but this border land between Veneto and Lombardia is steeped in history, a history that create the thing everyone knows as Italy.

Il fiume Mincio nasce da tre rami, il più orientale dei quali scorre dinnanzi al negozio del signor Daniele. Quello che vedete in secondo piano è la celebre fortezza di Peschiera del Garda e pochi metri oltre, dietro l’angolo, vi è il punto in cui il Mincio nasce dal lago di Garda. La gente normalmente non ci pensa, ma questa terra di confine tra il Veneto e la Lombardia è intrisa di storia, una storia così importante che è alla base della nascita della cosa conosciuta come Italia.

River Mincio: the fortress, the access canal and the railway bridge. With the signing of the armistice of Villafranca (1859, second Italian independence war) the emperors Franz Joseph and Napoleon III decided that the fortress of Peschiera and all eastern territories were to remain under Habsburg rule (please notate that were two foreign sovereigns to sign it, despite it was a war for the Italian idipendence…). Becameaware of the agreement terms, or that the northeastern regions would remain Austrian thus betraying the secret agreements of Plombières, count of Cavour lost his mind and began to insult his king and the French imperor. An outburst that occurred in Monzambano, a little town a few kilometers downstream of Peschiera, and that willshorten the Piedmontese prime minister’s life (insult and trick a French emperor hungry for territorial conquests is a very risky business).

Fiume Mincio: la fortezza, il canale di accesso e il ponte della ferrovia. Con la firma dell’armistizio di Villafranca (1859, seconda guerra di indipendenza italiana) gli imperatori Francesco Giuseppe e Napoleone III decisero che la fortezza di Peschiera e tutti i territori a est del Mincio dovessero rimanere sotto il dominio asburgico (notate che furono due sovrani stranieri a deciderlo, nonostante che fosse una guerra di indipendenza italiana…). Venuto a conoscenza dei termini di tale accordo, ovvero che le regioni nordorientali sarebbero rimaste austriache tradendo così gli accordi segreti di Plombières, il Conte di Cavour perse la testa e si mise a insultare il suo re e l’imperatore dei francesi. Uno sfogo che avvenne a Monzambano, un paese pochi chilometri a valle di Peschiera, e che contribuirà ad accorciare la vita del primo ministro piemontese (insultare e ingannare un imperatore francese affamato di conquiste territoriali è un’attività poco raccomandabile).

An seemingly insignificant road sign, but which is able to tell three very interesting things. The first one: it’s supported by four poles, when it only needs two. Why? It reflects a typical malpractice in countries with a high corruption: four poles costing twice than two, and therefore allow you to cash the double. The way in which the public works are performed in Italy is this: before of all is decided the amount that must remain in the politicians’ and businessmen’s pockets, and on the basis of this assessment it chooses the type of intervention, regardless of its actual utility. And this at every level, from MOSE to the useless lighting of a bicycle path. If you’ll be here in a few years, you will see this same road sign supported by six or eight poles. The second interesting thing it tells is about the name Cavour, the Piedmontese politician considered by the Italian official historiography as one of the four heroic fathers of the homeland (and when something has more than one father…). Often, however, the official historiography is a reconstruction of events invented by the winners, a reconstruction quite distance from historical reality. Another version tells about the count of Cavour like a mason, a conspirator, a warmonger, a briber, a murderess, a thief of legitimate realms and even a pappone. What’s the truth? Vae victis. Reading that time known as risorgimento italiano without the filter of nationalist rhetoric, you can learn many truths and decide which of the two versions about count of Cavour is closer to the truth.

Un cartello stradale apparentemente insignificante, ma che è in grado di raccontare tre cose molto interessanti. La prima: è sorretto da quattro pali, quando invece ne basterebbero la metà. Perché? Riflette un tipico malcostume dei paesi ad alto tasso di corruzione: quattro pali costano il doppio di due, e pertanto permettono di incassare il doppio. Il modo in cui vengono realizzate le opere pubbliche in Italia è esattamente questo: prima viene deciso l’ammontare che deve rimanere nelle tasche di politici e imprenditori, e sulla base di tale valutazione si sceglie la tipologia d’intervento, a prescindere dalla sua reale utilità. E questo a ogni livello, dal Mose all’inutile illuminazione di una pista ciclabile. Se ripasserete da queste parti tra qualche anno, troverete questo stesso cartello sorretto da sei, oppure otto pali. La seconda cosa interessante che esso racconta riguarda il nome Cavour, ovvero quello del politico piemontese considerato dalla storiografia ufficiale degli italiani come uno degli eroici quattro padri della loro patria (e già il fatto di avere più di un padre…). Spesso però la storiografia ufficiale è una ricostruzione artificiosa degli eventi a uso della classe dirigente uscita vincente dalle vicende di un determinato periodo, una ricostruzione parecchio distane dalla realtà storica. Un’altra linea di pensiero vede il conte di Cavour al pari di un massone, un cospiratore, un guerrafondaio, un corruttore, un assassino, un ladro di regni legittimi, e pure pappone. Qual’è allora la verità? Vae victis. A rileggere senza il filtro della retorica nazionalista di stato quel periodo passato alla storia come risorgimento italiano si possono apprendere molte verità scomode, e a cogliere quali delle due versioni del conte di Cavour sia più vicina alla verità.

“The aquatic park” is the third interesting thing about this road sign. ‘Water’ in Italian is spelled with ‘cq’ (acqua) and derived directly from the Latin word ‘aqua’; all derived words should be written in the same way (with the ‘cq’), including ‘acquatico‘. The mere presence of the ‘q’ indicates an archaic writing, but this doesn’t necessarily mean an error (archaic is not synonymous with wrong). There are companies whose name is deliberately Latin: Aquaprogram and Aqua for example. But then is it an error to write ‘aquatic’ on a road sign? I suggest reading this article: it speaks of 43,000 applications submitted to a public competition for 380 seats as judges, a contest that will declare suitable only 322 candidates, 58 less than necessary. The candidates all had degrees in legal disciplines in which the form and procedure are all about, but then how did it come to these numbers so conflicting (and embarrassing)? Evaluators said they were baffled by errors in grammar and spelling committed by the vast majority of candidates: in other words, they could not write, and to write usually you learn when you’re children in elementary school. Leaving aside any consideration of a school system that leads to the degree people not even able to write (and of a country’s destiny with a similar school system), I wonder how many of those candidates will have used words such as ‘aqua’ and ‘aquatic’ in the way that they shouldn’t have…

“Il parco aquatico” è la terza cosa interessante di questo segnale stradale. ‘Acqua’ in italiano si scrive con la ‘cq’ e deriva direttamente dal latino ‘aqua’; tutte le parole derivate vanno scritte nello stesso modo (con la ‘cq’), incluso ‘acquatico’. La sola presenza della ‘q’ sta a indicare una scrittura arcaica, ma questo non significa necessariamente un errore (arcaico non è sinonimo di sbagliato). Esistono aziende il cui nome richiama volutamente l’accezione latina: Aquaprogram e Aqua ne sono un esempio. Ma allora è un errore oppure no scrivere ‘aquatico’ su un cartello stradale? Vi propongo la lettura di questo articolo: parla di 43 mila domande presentate a un concorso pubblico per 380 posti disponibili come magistrati, un concorso che alla fine dichiarerà idonei solo 322 candidati, 58 in meno del necessario. I candidati avevano tutti lauree giuridiche, discipline in cui la forma è tutto, ma allora come si è arrivati a questi numeri così contrastanti (e imbarazzanti)? Gli scrutinanti si sono dichiarati sconcertati dagli errori grammaticali e sintassici commessi dalla grande maggioranza dei candidati: in altre parole non sapevano scrivere, e a scrivere di solito si impara da piccini alle scuole elementari. Lasciando perdere ogni considerazione su un sistema scolastico che spinge di peso alla laurea gente nemmeno in grado di scrivere (e sul destino di un paese con un simile sistema scolastico), mi chiedo quanti di quei candidati avranno usato parole come ‘aqua’ e ‘aquatico’ nel modo in cui non avrebbero dovuto…

Eccoci finalmente: oltre quella sbarra inizia il celebre campo di gara di Peschiera del Garda lungo il fiume Mincio.

This angler is launching a waggler towards the middle of the river, an action that was unthinkable until a special event held 17 years ago. The 1996 World Championship took place right here along the Mincio banks, and it was a very special edition: after the first day Italians had already won the title for nations so great was the gap with other teams. I remember as the great advantage had been provided by the use of floating casters, which allowed to raise the fish from the river bed covered with aquatic plants, together with the use of the pole and the Bolognese rod. And such was the advantage gained that the second day was reduced to a formality: it was thought that the individual title, or even the entire podium, was destined to be occupied by the Italians, but instead it wasn’t so…

Questo garista sta lanciando un waggler verso il centro del fiume, un’azione impensabile fino a un particolare evento svoltosi 17 anni fa. Il campionato del mondo del 1996 si svolse proprio qui, lungo le sponde del Mincio, e fu un’edizione molto particolare: il team italiano aveva già vinto il titolo per nazioni al termnine della prima gara, tanto era grande il divario con i diretti inseguitori. Ricordo come all’epoca il vantaggio incolmabile fosse stato garantito dall’uso dei caster galleggianti, che permettevano di alzare il pesce dal fondale ricoperto da piante acquatiche, unito all’uso delle roubaisienne e delle canne bolognesi. E tale era il vantaggio accumulato che la seconda giornata si era ridotta a una formalità: si pensava che anche il titolo intdividuale, o addirittura l’intero podio, fosse destinato a essere occupato dagli italiani. E invece così non fu.

On Saturday an unknown angler won his section fishing also some barbels with the Bolognese rod near the concrete wash-structure, at the deepest point of the Mincio, while on Sunday he alternated the Italic style with the match rod capturing determinant chubs. That unknow was Alan Scotthorne and managed to win the individual title for the happiness of Sir Richard Clegg, leaving behind Giucciardi, Milo and Trambucco. Since then wagglers sprout like grass on the Mincio banks.

Uno sconosciuto vinse nella giornata di sabato pescando con la bolognese anche alcuni barbi nei pressi del lavatoio, nel punto più profondo del Mincio, mentre domenica la alternò all’inglese catturando con questa dei cavedani determinanti. Quello sconosciuto era Alan Scotthorne e riuscì a vincere il titolo individuale per la felicità di Sir Richard Clegg, mettendosi dietro Giucciardi, Milo e Trambucco. Da allora i waggler spuntano come l’erba sulle sponde del Mincio.

This low quality and seemingly insignificant picture instead has a story to tell. In 1996 I worked as assistant cook at a hotel in Jesolo; in those early days of September there was not a lot of work and I got half-day leave of absence from my boss, so that Sunday morning in good time I got a license for half a day by my boss, and took the train to Peschiera. Although at that time I had never taken a picture in my life, I didn’t want to turn back from the World Cup without a reminder and asked the shopkeeper in my small town if he had a camera to give me: he took a little can of black plastic without any logo and charged it with a negative film of unknown brand, probably expired by long time. I had a total of 36 shots. The ideas were clear: there were Guido Nullens, Milo, Trabucco, Pickering and especially Bob Nudd, to which I dedicate a half roll. I couldn’t stay until the end of the match: pacta sunt servanda, and that afternoon I had to be back on the burners. Returning to the station, I noticed that there was yet a click to complete the film; it happened right in front of the concret wash-structure that you seen on the opposite bank. Then I read the name on the sign at the box input: it was written Scotthorne Alan, England. «Never heard before» I thought, «But if old Dick put him in team with Bob and Tommy, maybe he’s able to fish decently...» Here’s the last shot of that roll: Alan Scotthorne in the day he won his first individual world title.

Questa foto di bassa qualità e apparentemente insignificante ha invece una storia da raccontare. Nel 1996 lavoravo come aiuto cuoco in un albergo di Jesolo; in quei primi giorni di settembre non c’era più molto lavoro e ottenni dal mio titolare il permesso di assentarmi mezza giornata, sicché la domenica mattina di buon ora salii sul treno per Peschiera. Anche se a quei tempi non avevo mai scattato una foto in vita mia, non volevo tornarmene dal mondiale senza un ricordo e chiesi al negoziante del mio piccolo paese se avesse una macchina fotografica da potermi prestare: prese una scatoletta di plastica nera priva di qualsiasi logo e ci caricò una pellicola negativa di marca ignota, probabilmente scaduta da chissà quanto tempo. Avevo a disposizione 36 scatti. Le idee erano chiare su come impiegarli: c’erano Guido Nullens, Milo, Trabucco, Pickering e sopratutto Bob Nudd, al quale dedicai mezzo rullino. Non potei rimanere fino alla fine della gara: i patti sono patti, e quel pomeriggio dovevo essere di nuovo sopra i fornelli. Tornando verso la stazione mi accorsi che mancava uno scatto per completare il rullino; accadde proprio davanti al lavatoio che si vede sulla sponda opposta. Allora lessi il nome sul cartello presente all’ingresso di quel box: c’era scritto Scotthorne Alan. “Mai sentito”  pensai, “Se il vecchio Dick lo ha messo in squadra con Bob e Tommy, allora forse sa pescare decentemente…” Eccolo allora l’ultimo scatto di quel rullino: Alan Scotthorne nel giorno in cui vinse il suo primo titolo mondiale individuale. 

This edition of the Italic championship final was contested by forty teams divided into four zones, two upstream and two downstream the power line crosses the river. Since the break was over a kilometer long, I decided to follow only the last sections of the second upstream zone. 

Questa edizione della finale del campionato italico è stata disputata da quaranta squadre divise in quattro zone, due a valle e due a monte della linea elettrica che attraversa il fiume. Poichè l’interruzione era lunga oltre un chilometro, ho deciso di seguire solo gli ultimi settori della seconda zona a monte.

Un’esca molto classica nella pesca in acque interne italiane, da molto tempo caduta in disuso. Il baco da seta non viene più allevato in Italia e i prodotti commerciali che si trovano oggi nei negozi sono di provenienza orientale e non sempre di ottima qualità.

Emilio Colombo, better known as Milo. He’s the latest big name still in business of Italian circuit and, although he never won an individual world title, is in effect a living legend like Bob Nudd and Kevin Ashurst.

Emilio Colombo, meglio conosciuto come Milo. È l’ultimo grande nome dell’agonismo italiano ancora in attività e, anche se non ha mai vinto un titolo mondiale individuale, è a tutti gli effetti una living legend al pari di Bob Nudd e Kevin Ashurst.

I decided to follow Milo (team Longobardi) in the preparation phase, even because I never had the opportunity to photograph him in action before this match. Take note of the bucket full of groundbait and cans next to him: the amount of groundbait and baits is established by regulation and is controlled before the start.

Ho deciso di seguire proprio Milo nella fase di preparazione alla gara, anche perché non ho mai avuto modo di fotografarlo in azione prima d’ora. Fate caso al secchio pieno di pastura e di barattoli accanto a lui: la quantità di pastura e di esche è stabilita dal regolamento e viene controllata a inizio della gara.

Casters are highly appreciated by Mincio fish: when the river bed is full of aquatic plants (late summer-september), it will be better that they belong to the floating type (next to the insect hatching). Those used by Milo are quite clear (and sinking), much more than of Bruni’s ones.

I caster sono un’esca molto apprezzata dai pesci del Mincio: quando sul fondale sono presenti molte piante acquatiche, converrà che siano del tipo galleggiante (prossimo alla schiusa dell’insetto). Quelli usati da Milo sono abbastanza freschi (e quindi affondanti), molto più chiari di quelli di Bruni.

Wagglers on match rods and traditional floats on Bolognese rods. The Mincio flow varies according of the water amount in Garda lake, and of course of the rain. Today the current was moderate and allowed to fish in the middle even with the English style.

Waggler sulle match rod e galleggianti tradizionali sulle canne bolognesi. La corrente del Mincio varia in funzione della quantità d’acqua presente nel lago di Garda, e ovviamente dalla piovosità del periodo. Oggi era moderata e permetteva di pescare bene a centro fiume anche con lo stile inglese.

Milo is setting his long pole tips. These lines are disproportionate for the fishing here, simply because are lines for a precise purpose.

Milo sta settando le punte della sua roubaisienne: sono lenze sproporzionate per il tipo di pesca e di corrente del Mincio. Sono lenze per uno scopo molto preciso.

ABS is yust one of plate float models you can find on the market under the brand Milo, and is the only one with deep incisions on his hydrodynamic structure (the only one in the Milo catalog). Although you wont find any information about this model in the online catalog, it seems made of synthetic material. This type of flat float equipped with tip not in axis with drift is for a static action well anchored to the bottom, by aiming to fish as carps and crucians. From this point of view it’s like to another product more well known.

Questo è solo uno dei modelli di galleggianti piatti che trovate in commercio con il marchio Milo, ed è l’unico che presenta profonde incisioni idrodinamiche sulla struttura del corpo (l’unico nel catalogo Milo). Anche se sul documento PDF presente online non sono riportate informazioni interessanti, il modello sembra prodotto in materiale sintetico. Questo tipo di galleggiante dotato di antenna non in asse con la deriva serve per un’azione di pesca statica ben ancorata al fondo, insidiando pesci come carpe e carassi. Rricorda molto un altro prodotto ben più noto.

The Torpedo Cralusso is absolutely the most used plate float when it comes to fish nailed in fast waters, and the polyurethane with which it is realized makes it unbreakable. The only way to destroy this Cralusso is to take it with a hammer or get over with the car.

Il Torpedo di Cralusso è in assoluto il galleggiante piatto più utilizzato quando si tratta di pescare inchiodati in acque velocissime, e il poliuretano con cui viene realizzato lo rende praticamente indistruttibile. L’unico modo per distruggerlo è di prenderlo a martellate o passarci sopra con l’auto.

These floats show a different design than the above ones: the tip in line with the drift makes them suitable for a more fluid action than the ABS and Torpedo. They belong to the Spoiler serie and are made in polyurethane by Colmic.

This is a very interesting photo. First you note the elastic coming out from the pole tip: it has a very strong diameter, on the order of three millimeters. And now the line: it has a very strong section, around 0.30 millimeters in diameter, that is used normally in catching very big fish. Now look at the tip position: is aligned with the drift. In the Cralusso catalog there’s no a version of Torpedo with antenna in axis, and this can only mean a thing: it has been modified by the angler, apparently to fit it to the fishing in Mincio slow waters. In the third article I will explain in detail this particular fishing style.

In front of him, on the point where the groundbait balls fell into water, had gathered a group of ducks. Mincio birds are accustomed to fishing competitions and have learned to appreciate as the fish what anglers cast into the water. These ducks waiting for the ball of groundbait to grasp particles lost during the impact and the down to the bottom, but this photo tells something else: there’s a large water movement with the groundbait ball still suspended in air (you see it left). It’s a strange picture, and the only interpretation that I could give is that the groundbait hit a duck.

In its original form, this reel is a big piece of the European sport fishing history. The form is identical to the French Crack Contact, but it’s not a Crack Contact: it’s a Milo Tact 5403. I don’t know the commercial history of theTact line; well, next time I’ll ask Milo something about this model nowadays no more present in his catalog. We’ll see. He always uses them in various versions on all his Bolognese rods.

Milo Koex 4000 is a twenty years old Bolognese rod with a flexible action that makes it suitable for refined chub fishing in Mincio waters. It was available in lengths from 5 to 8 meters, and apparently continues to be the favorite of Milo despite his latest products.

While others continue to capture rudds and chubs, someone is dedicating to something else. To go out for several meters from the pole tip is a 3 mm elastic: only a few fish have so much strength.

7,418.590 kg of hybrids, roach, perch and skimmers weighed in over the week: that’s what has been experienced in the 2013 Lakelands and Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championships (64 pairs, 128 anglers, 11.591 kg to each one every day for five days). Friday, 13^th September, day 5: let’s see what appened during the last day of the event thanks to pictures and press release send me by Steve Lockett (you can have further information by the organizers’ official site and their Facebook page).

Dave ‘Mossy’ Moss is well known around the south of England for his home-made motorised trolley. He said: “When I retired, I decided to spend some money on getting myself kitted out to make the fishing easier. My van has ramps to get my trolley in and out, and even has a winch for if the battery goes flat.” Equipped with indicators, lights, a hooter, mobile phone charger and even refrigerated buckets for bait, is great for use on commercial fisheries, but most venues in Ireland require the old fashioned of carryin everything over slightly uneven terrain. During the World Pairs event, there was a blind teams of four drawn: Mossy lined up alongside Daiwa Cup front runner Rod Scott,Mark Pollard and eventual Daiwa Cup winner, Cathal Hughes. They finished with a total weight of 315.270 kg and Mossy was quick to point out his part in the success. He also said: “I had to put them all right several days. No, not really, I think they carried me and may not have needed my 35 kg at all. I blame fishing on commercials, it has badly affected the way I fish on natural venues.”

Ballyconnell, County Cavan,Willie Wheeler’s Angling Centre. Finding enough bait and emergency supplies of tackle is taken care of thanks to a network of shops and dealers around the Lakelands region. Former world individual silver medallist Willie Wheeler was keen to fish the event, but has to run his new tackle shop in Ballyconnell to cater for the daily draws at the Angler’s Rest Hotel. For anglers in Enniskillen, Fishing Tackle and Bait was on hand despite owner David Burleigh being in Poland on international duty for Ireland at the World Championships.

In Ballinamore, County Leitrim, local legend Gabriel Owen left wife Dee to look after those who came to The Forge for supplies. This shop is an institution in angling circles, with its haphazard displays and curious mix of floats and plumbing suppies. Usually in the same boxes. Dee and Gabriel insiste they know exacly where everything is, so once you have taken a look, it’s probably best to ask for what you want.

This is a scene that you’ll never see in Italic waters, simply because there’s no environmental culture in Italy.

Philip Jackson: drawing time.

Day one, Monday 9^th: morning rain, turned warm and sunny, 18°-19°, light winds. Day two, Tuesday 10^th: started bright, became overcast, 15°-16°, moderate breeze. Day three, Wednesday 11^th: morning rain, cleared in afternoon, 17°-18°, moderate wind. Day four, Thursday 12^th: misty morning, overcast skies gave heavy rain later, 17°-18°, strong winds in afternoon. Day five, Friday 13^th: generally clear and bright, 18°-19°, light breezes. The weather over the winter and into this summer played a big part in the fabulous fishing.

Even during the week competition, the weather stayed quite mid for the time of year. Many local people thought the sport has been much better this year thanks to a cold winter and warm, dry summer.

Gabriel Owens, who has guided anglers to the Lakelands region for more than twenty years, spends time out in boats filming underwater, and had this to say: “The water clarity has lead to an explosion of roach/bream hybrids, which makes for consistent angling. The big bream are still in the lakes, but they tend to feed at night now. The dry weather certainly made the fishing better than in 2012, when the rain kept the water temperatures down. We can see fish moving all the time when we’re out on the lakes. A few more anglers coming here and throwing bait in would keep them feeding and growing and help those catches that we all want to see.”

Rain and wind: no problem for northern anglers.

Rudigen with a nice hybrid. He was the top finisher of the German visitors: his 63.330 kg left him in 44^th place at the end. Other German angler Markus Billen finished strongly in 64^th place with 57.410 kg thanks to a last day 16.560 of quality pole caught fish next to Cathal Hughes.

Not only feeder fishing: to be competitive you have to fish well also with the pole.

Steve Ringer at Bunerky Lake. He said: “Cathal had told us that Bunerky Lake would be a pole job if the skimmers and the hybrids weren’t feeding, but Brackley would be out and out feeder fishing. Phil isn’t the best on the pole, so we had to have me draw on Bunerky and Phil at Brackley.” Drawing exactly that order helped Steve win his section with an astounding 18 kg of tiny roach on the pole at 13 m.

The other half of Ringer pair: Phil was drawn 4 on Brackley Lake and fished the feeder at short range all day. He said: “In the first two hours of the match I had 80 fish. They were mostly perch, but good little weight builders.”

Phil swings a little perch. “I began to get a few hybrids as well, but I was maily fishing for the perch cup!” he said. When the final whistle blew on the 2013 competition, Phil’s 18 kg net was also enough for a section win, but the combined 36 kg was never enough to overhaul Cathal and Jacko’s 48 kg addition. It was, however, just enough to lift the Ringer Brothers from 7^th to 2^nd, with a different of €7,000 in prize money.

And now while swings a roach. With some of the best of Europe’s anglers taking part this year, it was always going to be diffucult to win either the pairs or the Daiwa Cup. Steve Ringer knew he and Phil still had things to learn about Irish festival fishing. «I had bad day on the Mud Flats. I knew there were some bream around and just tried too hard to catch them. Instead, I should have got my head down and scraped some small fish togheter» he said. His 2.060 kg final weight in day two was made up of a single bream from peg 12A, while Phil managed to put 12 kg on the scales in section B. «The problem was, we didn’t know what would be target weights for the week. I was going all out for a big weight, when there were always going to be areas where 7 or 8 kg was the best you could ever hope for» he said again.

Steve Ringer was one of the big names drawn to fish the Lakelands and Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championships. With brother Phil as his partner, he came to take on some of the best match anglers in Europe on venues and in a country he had never fished before. Unluckily, he fell just short of both pairs’ and individual wins, picking up second place in both.

Steve spoke about his visit: “It’s been fantastic. Phil and me have definitely learnt that the fishing here rewards anglers that work hard. There have been just a couple of poor pegs, but still a good day’s fishing with 10 kg or more on offer at over 90% of the pegs. We never imagined the fishing would be so consistent.”

Going in to the last day, not only were the pairs’ results on the line, but the battle for the Daiwa Cup was finely balanced. Steve Ringer began the day just over 4 kg ahead of his Irish rival. But the County Galway bagger was heading for a section that had given better weights all week, although not by much. Cathal found himself right here, on Garadice Lake, in Haughton’s Shore, at peg ten: 15 kg was the best weight from the peg before the arrival of the 2010 World Champ silver medallist. After balling in at 13 meters with a groundbait mix lightly laced with chopped worm and casters, his first three casts saw three hybrids in the net before five minutes were up. «You have to just point the rod and crank them. When you hear the shockleader come into the tip ring, give it five more turns and lift» he said.

The Irishman while netting a nice breme. He won the section with 27.6 kg outdistancing of 10 kilos Lee Klimczuk, second with 17.7 kg (peg 7).

The best section all week was on the Crom Estate on Upper Lough Erne in Fermanagh (Wednesday, day 3). Both the River and Turfhouse sections gave always decent nets, but the day Cathal arrived was the day for the top weight of the week: the feeder and pole routine worked a treat on peg 12 on the Crom River and 40.180 kg was the end result of five hours of frantic fishing. He said: «It was the day I realized you need to rest the feeder line to keep the hybrids coming.» By swapping to the pole after three or four hybrids, he ensured the shoal never got spooked. A few roach on the pole line would come very fast and then he could go back on the feeder for another burst of hybrids. Also speed has had its importance, as you can read from this report by Simon Young.

Bunches of red maggots proved to be the most successful bait for both Cathal and Jacko. These enabled the pair to pick off both hybrids and roach on either the pole or feeder (not this time: the bait seems to be an earthworm).

Another nice bream for the World Champs silver medallist (Merida, Spain 2010). Although being Irish residents, neither of them fish the venues used in this event. It was a first time visit to the Mud Flats section at Carrick on Shannon, but Cathal still pulled out one of his now customary section-destroying performances. «Look, we fish in Ireland all the time and we have a way of fishing that suits lots of these venues,» said Cathal, «Jacko is a bit more intense than I am, so gets to thinking about how and why things are happening and what could happen, but I just take it one day at a time.» Starting on the feeder and then resting it by swapping to the pole was a key part of their success. Cathal went on to say: «Understanding the way hybrids want to feed is a big part of it. You can’t keep dropping a feeder on their heads. By resting the feeder line, you can keep going back out and add a few more quick fish.»

Jackson said: «It has been a brilliant week, but to be honest my best day was last Saturday: during the small practise match on Bunerky Lake, I had 35 kg in cold, horrible weather. It was a real good day and helped me get my teeth into what we had to do.» Over the course of the week there were twelve weights in excess of 30 kg (picture taken on Saturday 7^th).

Ron Van Den Voort and his amazing catch. From Holland, he was the best placed angler from outside the UK and Ireland: his 34^th place with 66.430 kg was helped by a nice catch of bream on day one on the river Shannon. Ron has been coming to Ireland to fish two festivals every day for 15 years and the World Pairs Angling Competition is firmly fixed in his diary now.

Friday evening: relax time for the living legend Kevin Ashurst. With 59.480 kg in five days Mr Ashurst has obtained the 53^rd position in Daiwa Cup, anyway better than achieved by another living legend: Bob Nudd, 63^rd with 57.430 kg.

Robin Morley, Sales and Marketing Director of Daiwa Sports, gave an address in which he expressed thanks for the sponsorship that Lakelands and Inland Waterways put into the World Pairs event. By putting £8500 worth of tackle prizes and the Daiwa Cup into the individual event, the Scottish-based company continue to follow up on Robin’s pledge in 2012 to support the event for at least five years. Mr Morley, who had a very successful career as a match angler for Daiwa Dorking, acknowledged the standard of angling on display at the 2013 event. He said: «It’s great for fishing in Ireland that anglers of this calibre are coming to fish the World Pairs Angling Championships. Everyone fishing, and myself on behalf of Daiwa Sorts, want to thank Lakelands and Inland Waterways for the incredible sponsorship they are putting in to this event. Long may it continue.»

To answer the congratulations and thanks from the various dignitaries at the closing ceremony, Kevin Locke called on 1989 individual World Champion Tommy Pickering to address the audience on behalf of the anglers. The presence of a large number of the competitors is down to Tommy’s promotion of the event on fisheries and matches in the UK and Europe. In his typical proud, patriotic way, he spoke at lenght about his feelings for the Lakelands and Inland Waterways World Pairs Championships. He said: «It was good last year, this year it’s fantastic. One of the biggest changes is in the strength of angler fishing. Every day, at my peg, I looked down the line of anglers and saw quality. We had two of the three best match anglers ever fishing this event in Bob Nudd and Kevin Ashurst. Although it was a serious match, we had a great laugh every day. We met wonderful people in the towns and villages where we stayed. The class of angler here this week is the true test and makes this event very special. Without Lakelands and Inland Waterways support, these anglers wouldn’t be here. Between them and Daiwa, one of the biggest tackle companies in the world, we anglers need to promote the event and spread the word about the welcome, the quality of sport and the standard of match that we have.»

However, not everything went right: something serious has happened during day two when Mark Williams had a heart attack on the bank at Kiltybarden. The ambulance arrived within ten minutes. All the IFI stewards are first aid trained and speed really was of the essence in saving Mark’s life.

Cheers rang around the closing ceremony when Mark walked in the room, accompanied by paramedic Patrick McGreevy. Mark’s two close friends Stephen and Fiona Beeby were on hand to keep make sure he wasn’t overwhelmed by the occasion. Mark finished by saying: «My partner and four boys all wanted to fly over, but I said I was fine and not to bother. I was amongst good friends and with a new friend in Patrick. He tells me the air ambulance is threatened with closure due to budget cuts. Without that, and people like Patrick and Shane, I would not be here to tell this story and would not be fishing this great event next year.»

Third pair (with a total weight of 164.580kg): Paul Keeley and Lee Addy with Damian McWheeny (Waterways Ireland) and Eddie McGovern (Fermanagh District Council). Lee is Mark Addy’s song, England Team Manager, in those days engaged in the world championship in Poland.

Ringer brothers, Steve and Phil, collect trophies from Michael Fitzsimons (Failtre Ireland), Eddie McGovern (Fermanagh District Council) and Damian McWheeny (Waterways Ireland). Steve and Phil had a great week despite not getting their hands on the main prize. On they first ever visit to fish in Ireland, they gradually crept through the field to claim the €7,500 for second-place (total weight 167.100 kg). «We have both really enjoyed our week here,» Phil said, «Getting to the venues each day was very easy, the fishing was incredible apart for one poor day for me on Airport and we’ve had help everywhere from the locals.»

Colm Breheny (Failtre Ireland), Philip Jackson, Robin Morley (Daiwa Sports), Cathal Huges, Eddie McGovern (Fermanagh District Council) and Damian McWheeny (Waterways Ireland). «We will fish to win, but without going stupid,» Jackson said on day one, «We know that there will be some pegs where 5 or 6 kg will be a good weight. There’s no point trying to do too much, the better pegs will come and then we’ll take advantage.» And take advantage they certainly did: 185.280 kg for them.

“They say that lighting doesn’t strike twice, but talented Irish anglers Philip ‘Jacko’ Jackson and Cathal Hughes proved that wrong and walked off with the €16,000 winners cheque and Irish crystal vases. Defending their 2012 title, the lads from either side of the border came togheter again to defeat a stronger field in this, the second year of the event. With a massive 185.280 kg over the five days fishing, they comfortably held off second-placed Steve and Phil Ringer.” With these words begins the match report of this 2013 event.

Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland pair, Philip Jackson and Cathal Hughes, retained their crown as Lakelands and Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championship. Congratulations.

Cathal Hughes also won the individual title, and of course the second edition of Daiwa Cup (107.430 kg for him). Second place for Steve Ringer with 102.140 kg and third Peter Jones with 96.430. I don’t know why Cathal wasn’t in Poland with the Irish team, however I guess that satisfactions are not missed to him.

Sorry for the low quality of this picture, but it’s just an enlargement of the previous one. An interesting particular: on the basis of the Daiwa Cup can be read: “2012 F. McGoldrick”, Irish like Cathal. This means that on it will be inscribed the individual winner’s name of every edition, just as happens to the individual Men’s World Championship cup. This was not a brilliant edition for Frances: 12^nd in the individual ranking with 81.640 kg and just 9^th in pair with Dave Brettell (155.470 kg pair weight).

A great event, no doubt, only I wonder why it was chosen the same week of the senior men’s World Championship. There were famous names and living legends, but many others would be able to come if they were free from engagements with Irish and British teams. We hope that next year there will be no more this overlap. A special mention goes to some people who have worked hard day and night, on the field and in front of a computer monitor, to ensure that everything was going well for the anglers: Michael Fitzpatrick, Helen Rainsford and Steve Lockett.

“Lough Scur Rocks section has a reputation for trowing up bream weights, and day four was no exception”, so begins the daily newsletter from the organizers about the fourth match. And then let’s see it this day 4 with images send me by Steve Lockett.

Dickie Carr netting a skimmer. As he has been right to the top of the game, and still comes to Ireland for a month every year. Still keen just short of his 70th birthday and still a force to be reckoned with.

“Poor old boy like me, I can only catch the little ones”, seems to think Dickie while swinging a small skimmer. On peg 5 in section 2B, he was beaten by Michael Buchwalder (peg 6) who catched 12.480 kg.

His 11.520 kg net included a couple of better stamp fish, but most were in 6-12 oz range (170-340 grams).

He fished worm on the hook most of the day, but also piched off a couple of caster.

Michael Buchwalder agreed that he had probably fed too match worm today. He said: “I reckon I’ve fed close to a kilo”.

The first thing that Napoleon Bonaparte claimed to know from his generals were the details, and the details of an angler’s equipment have their own importance. Frances is using an old Tounament feeder rod, tool top class as would be expected from the winner of a Daiwa Cup.

Rory Smith. Peg 8 for him, the harder draw in 5A. He was casting his feeder close to 50 meters for his fish, but not as far as the boats that were passing.

Rory managed to sneak a skimmer that was very nearly a bream for the cameras (13,600 kg for him).
