The title is misleading, I clarify it: this individual podium with Steve Hemingray, József Varga and Renè Stronk doesn’t belong to the World Championship for clubs which took place during the second weekend of June 2014 on the river Sava, central Slovenia, but belongs to the 2009 European Championship for nations. I wanted to be there last June to cover the event but work commitments not allowed to me, and no work no money… never as in this historical period (and above all in the very sad Italy) work is worth more than the God’s grace, and if you have the fortune of having one is better you keep it tight. However, it was strong the tentation of an article about that enchanted place that is the valley of the river Sava, and then here’s some shots retrieved thanks to Lightroom’s algorithms.
Il titolo è fuorviante, chiariamo subito la questione: questo podio individuale con Steve Hemingray, József Varga e Renè Stronk non appartiene al mondiale per club svoltosi lo scorso mese di giugno in Slovenia, bensì al campionato europeo del 2009. Avrei voluto esserci per coprire l’evento ma gli impegni di lavoro non me l’hanno consentito, a meno di non lavorare… il fatto è che mai come in questo periodo storico il lavoro nella triste Italia vale più della grazia di Dio, e chi ha la fortuna di averne uno è meglio che se lo tenga ben stretto. Tuttavia era forte l’idea di un articolo su quel luogo fatato che è la valle della Sava nella Slovenia centrale, e allora ecco riemergere alcuni scatti dagli algoritmi di Lightroom.
I was ready Sunday morning. I finished my work, had a shower, the car was loaded, but there was a problem: it was 9 o’clock. Unfortunately I finished very late (or early, it’s a point of view) and according to what you can read to the Google Map, it takes almost three hours and a half to reach the matchfield, when the competition started at 10 o’clock. Sometimes in life you have to silence the heart.
Domenica mattina ero pronto: avevo finito di lavorare da un’ora, mi ero fatto un doccia, l’auto era carica con ciò che serviva, ma c’era un problema. Erano le 9 in punto. Purtroppo avevo finito molto tardi (o molto presto, dipende dal punto di vista) e stando a ciò che potete leggere dalla Google Map ci vogliono tre ore e mezza per raggiungere il campo di gara, quando la seconda prova sarebbe iniziata alle 10 in punto. A volte nella vita bisogna saper zittire il cuore.
In 2009 I was still convinced about the superior quality of film slides over the digital technology, because it was still alive in my mind the horrific images of the 2003 Champions League final which took place at Old Trafford in Manchester. The glory of that day was mortified by the low quality of the images in newspapers: even if photos were realized by super expensive ‘pro’ cameras, in early 2000 years digital tecnology offered pitiful results in term of resolution, and then in sharpness. «If this is the best we can see by the digital technology, then the film will become immortal», I thought We were at the begin of mass diffusion of digital photography and photographic industry had to start somewhere, but it was a pity they decided to experiment with that historic Milan’s victory, which instead was worthy of all the slides’ quality. Curiously, in the late summer of that same 2003 was presented a reflex that would have created a new market segment: Canon chose the bank of the river Thames for the official launch of EOS 300D, an amateur camera that paradoxically offered much more than the super professional ones of that time; and the Japanese company did it with a price of only 1300 euro lens included (list price in the Italian market). It’s a historical product, the milestone that made the concept of digital SLR affordable for all budgets, a concept considered super-professional and super expensive (despite the poor performance). Today if you can buy a SLR with a sensor inside, you really have to thanks this model.
In quel lontano 2009 ero ancora convinto della superiorità qualitativa della pellicola sul digitale, tanto erano vive nei miei ricordi le orrende immagini relative alla finale di Champions Leage svoltasi sei anni prima all’Old Trafford di Manchester. La gloria di quel giorno venne mortificata dalla scadentissima qualità delle foto pubblicate sui quotidiani del periodo: il fatto è che per quanto costose e tecnologicamente avanzate per l’epoca, quelle macchine fotografiche digitali super professionali e super costose offrivano risultati pietosi in termini di risoluzione, e quindi di nitidezza. «Se questo è il meglio che sa offrire il digitale, allora la pellicola diventerà immortale», pensai. Erano gli arbori della fotografia digitale di massa e da qualche parte si doveva pur iniziare, peccato solo che avessero deciso di sperimentare su una storica vittoria del Milan meritevole invece di tutta la qualità della pellicola. Curiosamente, nella tarda estate di quello stesso 2003 venne presentata una reflex rivoluzionaria che avrebbe creato un nuovo segmento di mercato: Canon scelse le sponde del Tamigi per la presentazione ufficiale della EOS 300D, fotocamera amatoriale che paradossalmente offriva molto di più delle super professionali del momento, facendolo al costo, all’epoca sconvolgentemente basso, di soli 1300 euro obiettivo incluso (prezzo di listino sul mercato italiano). Si tratta di un prodotto storico poiché è la pietra miliare che rese alla portata di tutte le tasche il concetto di digital reflex fino a quel momento considerato superprofessionale (e super costoso nonostante le scarse performance). Se oggi potete permettervi l’acquisto di una reflex dotata di sensore, lo dovete proprio a questo modello.
Five years ago I took with me three cameras to Radece: my two faithful Pentax MZ-5N with a good supply of Fuji Sensia 100, plus a little purchase of which I wasn’t too convinced: a Canon EOS 300D. I took it used more for the depreciated price that characterizes all objects with a high electronic content, rather than motivated by real conviction: I thought it was an amatorial class reflex presented in the same year of the final disputed at Old Trafford… Well, as it was obvious to expect I realized the best shots of the day with my two Pentax (on the Fuji Sensia film slides), while I used the Canon to experiment (with little conviction). Today the slides are hard to find, missing in some remote place of my house, but it was enough to type the word ‘Radece’ on the keyboard to get back those shots in the time of a breath. These are shots of second or third choice for quality and cannot compete with the others taken with Pentax, fact is that things like these make you realize why the film is on the verge of extinction. The photos accompanying this article were all produced by the 6 mega pixels sensor of the 300D, obviously with the exception of the satellite ones.
Cinque anni fa a Radece portai con me tre macchine fotografiche: le mie fide Pentax MZ-5N accompagnate da una buona scorta di Fuji Sensia 100, più un acquisto di cui tuttavia non ero troppo convinto: una Canon EOS 300D. La presi usata qualche anno prima allettato più dal prezzo svalutato che caratterizza tutti gli oggetti a elevato tenore di elettronica, piuttosto che motivato da reale convinzione, anche perché si trattava di una reflex di classe consumer presentata proprio nello stesso anno della finale di Manchester… Beh, come era ovvio aspettarsi gli scatti migliori di quel giorno li realizzai con le Pentax, mentre la Canon fu usata per sperimentare. Fatto sta che oggi le diapositive sono introvabili, disperse in qualche angolo remoto della mia casa, mentre è bastato digitare la parola ‘RADECE’ sulla tastiera del mio computer per riavere in un istante quegli scatti. Sono immagini di seconda o terza scelta che per qualità non possono competere con quelli realizzati sulla pellicola, sta di fatto che situazioni come questa contribuiscono ad aver portato la pellicola sull’orlo dell’estinzione (le fotografie a corredo di questo articolo sono state tutte generate dal sensore da 6 mega pixel della 300D, ovviamente con l’eccezione delle satellitari).
I downloaded this image from the official document of the Fishing Assosation of Slovenia: it shows the sectors and the characteristics in depth of each one, which are the same of the 2009 event and of the last year’s Ladies’ World Championship. The Sava is a river and cannot have the regularity of a canal, of course: so, no surprise about differences in depth between the various sectors on distance of 13 meters from shore (2.5 meters in area ‘A’ to 7.5 meters of the ‘C’ and ‘D’).

Even in 2009 I finished my work in the morning, but long before than in last Juny and had enough time for my report. When I arrived at Radece, the second match had already started by an hour. I took this photo in front of the Fishing Club, downstream the sector ‘A’, and the first thing that strikes the eyes is the dominant green of landscape. Even the Veneto-Friuli enjoyed of such a blinding green, but now, thanks to the lobby of the concrete and to the corrupt political class, to be become dominant is the gray of reinforced concrete. To understand what I mean, try to take a look to the pictures of this my old article. Fortunately, in this sad case galleys began to receive the criminals, although between silk sheets and gold bars; but what is worse is that very soon they will return to their Pharaonic villas to enjoy the illegal wealth they accumulated in years of Italian jobs.
Anche in occasione dell’europeo per nazioni del 2009 terminai di lavorare la mattina presto, solo che all’epoca ci riuscii molto prima ed ebbi sufficiente tempo per il mio reportage; nel giungere a Radece la seconda prova era già iniziata da un’ora. Scattai questa foto davanti al Fishing Club, a valle del settore ‘A’, e la prima cosa che colpisce l’occhio è la dominante verde del paesaggio circostante. Anche il Veneto-Friuli godeva un tempo di un simile verde accecante, mentre oggi grazie alle lobby del cemento e a una classe politica corrotta fino al midollo, a essere diventato dominante è il grigiore del cemento armato. Per capire cosa intendo, provate a dare un’occhiata alle fotografie in questo mio vecchio articolo. Almeno in questo triste caso le galere hanno iniziato ad accogliere i responsabili, anche se tra sbarre d’oro e lenzuola di seta, e sopratutto tra non molto se ne torneranno nelle loro ville faraoniche a godere delle ricchezze accumulate illegalmente sulla pelle di una terra non loro.
In recent times, the name of river Sava was back under my eyes for a reason unrelated to sport fishing: Masterpiece. It is an unique television program, a talent show in which aspiring writers were called to promote – and defend – their own novels. Winner of the first edition was Nikola P. Savic, a Serbian who moved from his country to a small town west of Venice, and his strongly autobiographical novel speaks about his homeland, his district, his people, the war in the Balkans, and about the baths on the river Sava in Belgrado where it flows into the Danube. ‘Better Life‘ was published in 100,000 copies and is a work that deserves his little place on the shelf. A criticism concerns the cover: too banal. Likely it was been imposed by the publisher, because writers usually should not be lacking in imagination. Anyway, every time I read his name printed in Polyphemic font I always have the same question: what does the ‘P’ stand for? When I’ll meet him, I’ll ask him. Well, it reminds me of the most famous Hollywood’s quotation ever, even though I doubt it could have the same meaning as the one in Joseph P. Brenner.
In tempi recenti il nome del fiume Sava mi è tornato sotto gli occhi per un motivo estraneo alla pesca sportiva: Masterpiece. Si tratta di un programma televisivo unico, un talent nel quale aspiranti scrittori sono chiamati a promuovere – e a difendere – il proprio capolavoro. Vincitore della prima edizione è stato Nikola P. Savic, un serbo trasferitosi da piccolo in un paesino a ovest di Venezia, e il suo romanzo fortemente autobiografico parla proprio della patria lasciata, del suo quartiere, della sua gente, della guerra nei Balcani, dei bagni nella Sava a Belgrado là dove poco oltre va a confluire nel Danubio. ‘Vita migliore’ è stato pubblicato in 100 mila copie ed è un’opera che merita il suo posticino nello scaffale; se gli si può appuntare una critica, questa riguarda la copertina fin troppo banale. Probabile che gli sia stata imposta dall’editore, anche perché di solito gli scrittori non dovrebbero difettare in fantasia. Ogni volta che vi leggo il suo nome a caratteri polifemici mi sorge sempre lo stesso dubbio: per cosa sta quella ‘P.’? Se mai mi capiterà di incontrarlo, statene certi che glielo chiederò. Ricorda tanto la più celebre battuta hollywoodiana di tutti i tempi, anche se dubito possa avere il medesimo significato di quella contenuta in Joseph P. Brenner.
Masterpiece liked to the TV managers of other countries, so much so that they have purchased the format, and if in the coming months you’ll see on your television a talent in which poor aspiring scribblers are mistreated, now you know that everything had its origin in the city of Turin. However, should the Italics expect the Masterpiece’s second edition during the next fall? Answer: no, at least for the time it’s not on the program. The fact is that smart things doesn’t work in the very sad Italy, as you surely already know.
Masterpiece è piaciuto ai manager delle televisioni di altri paesi, tanto da acquistarne il format. Quindi, se nei prossimi mesi vedrete sulle vostre TV un talent show in cui vengono maltrattati poveri aspiranti scribacchini, sappiate che tutto ha avuto origine nella città di Torino. A proposito, che il prossimo autunno gli italici debbano aspettarsi la seconda edizione del programma? Risposta: no, almeno per il momento non se ne parla. Il fatto è che le cose intelligenti non funzionano nella triste Italia, come sicuramente già sapete.

I always take my photos using RAW format and after the shooting optimize them with Lightroom, but not during the 2009 European Championship: like a beginner I taken them directly in JPEG, the compressed format with loss of information, the same one used by mobile phones and cheap compact cameras. Differences between these two formats are in the quality and in the space that files fill on the memory card: RAW maintains all the image information but it is heavy and takes a lot of memory, while the other one does exacly the opposite. The biggest advantage of RAW is that it allows you a great amount of control in post production and that’s because almost all pros taking their pictures using this mode.
Scatto sempre le mie foto nel formato RAW per poi ottimizzarle in Lightroom, ma non nell’occasione dell’europeo 2009: da buon dilettante le scattai direttamente in Jpeg, il formato compresso con perdita di informazioni su cui basano il loro funzionamento anche i telefonini e le fotocamere compatte da pochi euro. La differenza tra questi due formati sta nella qualità e nello spazio che il file occupa in memoria: il RAW mantiene tutte le informazioni dell’immagine ma è pesante e occupa molta memoria, mentre l’altro fa esattamente l’opposto. Il vantaggio del RAW è che esso permette margini di intervento sull’immagine nettamente superiori, motivo per cui quasi tutti i professionisti scattano le loro foto in questa modalità.

7,240 grams for him, but I can’t tell you anything about his placement. Instead, it’s interesting the cap of this gentleman: the logo SAM you read is about of a fishing rod manufacturer (Sam is a surname) who had its headquarter in the city of Pordenone, Friuli, in the northeast of the peninsula, as well as near there existed various other fishing rod companies of which the most famous was Triana. It was a family craft business in a sixties and seventies perfect style, companies founded and directed by a father/owner which remained on the market until they had the support of the fishing boom of that period. But the good period finished, and many old match anglers with it: when the market decided to align with the laws of economics, to the fathers/owners of the old school (who knew very little of economy) disappeared the ground under their feet. And their companies with it.

Invece è interessante il berretto di questo signore: il logo SAM che potete leggere è quello di un produttore di canne da pesca che aveva sede nella città friulana di Pordenone, nel nordest della penisola, così come nei pressi ne esistevano varie altre tra le quali la più famosa fu senz’altro la Triana. Erano aziende artigianali a conduzione famigliare in perfetto stile anni sessanta-settanta, ovvero fondate e dirette in prima persona dal padre-imprenditore che rimasero sul mercato finché ebbero il sostegno del boom della pesca sportiva. Estintosi il periodo buono e con esso molti vecchi pescatori, nel momento in cui quello stesso mercato che fino ad allora li aveva premiati decise poi di allinearsi alle leggi dell’economia, quegli imprenditori di vecchio stampo che di economia gran poco sapevano si videro sparire il terreno da sotto i piedi. E con esso le loro aziende.
There are two philosophies to conduct a competition for team: I call them the ‘über alles‘ and the ‘all togheter passionately‘. In ‘all togheter passionately‘ philosophy, the match strategy is planned by team managers and matchanglers must comply with it during the competition; sometimes it works and sometimes not, the fact is that in the name of a team placing often an athlete is penalized in what should be his highest aspiration: the top position over the individual podium. A typical team that follows this philosophy is the Italian one to the point that it is not difficult to see its members get to do the peschetta to the small fish under their own feet in order to defend a modest position, rather than aiming to the winning fish.
Esistono due distinte filosofie nella condotta di gara in una manifestazione per squadre, quelle che io chiamo la ‘über alles’ e la ‘tutti assieme appassionatamente’. Nella ‘tutti assieme appassionatamente’ la strategia pianificata a tavolino dai cittì è quella che poi i garisti dovranno rispettare durante lo svolgimento delle prove; a volte funziona e a volte no, di certo è che nel nome di un piazzamento di squadra molto spesso l’atleta si vede penalizzare in quella che dovrebbe essere la sua massima aspirazione: il gradino più alto del podio individuale. Una tipica squadra che segue questa filosofia alla lettera è il team italiano, al punto che non è difficile vedere i suoi componenti mettersi a fare la peschetta ai pescetti sotto i piedi pur di difendere un risulto modesto, piuttosto che puntare al jolly risolutore.
Englishmen think it different and if the team placement is important for them, the individual one seems to be too. Or much more. After all who can blame them? Pointing to individual glory they do good for the team as well, and looking at statistics they have a team title more than Italy (13 vs 12), not counting the individual titles and legends (living and not). Numbers are merciless and leave no margin for discussions: this is winning mentality and people love winners. Everytime I look at photos like this one, I think that the real opponents of an English angler are his own teammates, rather than the other matchanglers in the sector.
Gli inglesi sono fatti di tutt’altra pasta e se per loro il piazzamento di squadra è importante, quello individuale lo è altrettanto. O molto di più. Del resto come dargli torto? Puntando alla gloria personale si fa pure il bene della squadra e a conti fatti oggi hanno un mondiale a squadre in più dell’Italia (13 contro 12), senza contare i titoli individuali e le leggende più o meno viventi. Comunque i numeri sono impietosi e non lasciano margine alle discussioni: questa è mentalità vincente e alla gente piace i vincenti. Quando vedo foto come questa, a volte penso che i veri avversari di un inglese siano i suoi stessi compagni di squadra, piuttosto che gli altri garisti nel proprio settore.

The average size was not high in this area, even if I remember the catch of a big carp by an upstream competitor. I’ve seen photos with big breams catched during the World Championship for clubs of last June, and this increases my regret for not being there.
La taglia media dei pesci non era elevata in questo settore, anche se ricordo la cattura di una grossa carpa da parte di un concorrenti più a monte. In un report sul mondiale per club dello scorso giugno ho visto foto con bréme molto grosse, cosa che aumenta il rammarico per non esserci stato.

There was also Jacopo Falsini in that edition of the European Championship for nations, I remember it well because we had a friendly discussion (he’s a gentleman) about a sentence in an article of mine published two years before. The object was his individual world title won by Jacopo in 2000 in Florence when he scored the same points of Will Raison, beating the Englishman for the top weight. An individual title that I defined as ‘won in the home garden’. There was no malice in my sentence, of course, but an observation dictated by my outspoken writing style. Anyway, if I were Falsini I’d be pissed off if I had read about of ‘a title lost in the house garden‘…

C’era anche Jacopo Falsini in quella edizione dell’europeo per nazioni, me lo ricordo bene poiché avemmo una cordiale discussione relativa a una frase apparsa in un mio articolo pubblicato qualche anno prima su una rivista che oggi non esiste più. L’oggetto era il suo titolo mondiale individuale vinto nel 2000 nell’Arno a Firenze quando arrivò a pari punti con Will Raison, battendo l’inglese per il peso superiore, un titolo che definii come ‘vinto nel giardino di casa’. Non c’era malizia in quella frase, ovvio, ma una semplice constatazione dettata dallo stile schietto della mia scrittura. Comunque, io al posto suo mi sarei risentito se avessi letto di un ‘titolo perso nel giardino di casa’…
Two close-ups on Sorti’s catches, which even in this case should be nasen (Chondrostoma nasus). In rivers of central and northern part of the Italian peninsula there’s an endemic varieties belonging to the same genus called savetta (Chondrostoma soetta), which is smaller than the nasen but really appreciated by anglers for his combativeness. It’s an animal in rarefaction, overpowered by alien species, pollution and environment devastations.

Nei fiumi della parte centrale e settentrionale della penisola italica esiste una varietà endemica appartenente a questo stesso genere, chiamata savetta (Chondrostoma soetta). È un pesce che raggiunge dimensioni inferiori rispetto al nasen ma al tempo stesso apprezzatissima dai pescatori al colpo per la sua combattività. Si tratta di un animale in rarefazione, sopraffatta dall’inquinamento, dalla devastazione dell’ambiente e dal successo delle specie aliene.
