The perfectly ironed white shirt, the bow tie around the neck, the shoes polished; everything is ready for the umpteenth night’s work when the phone starts to scream… my friend Giampaolo: “I’m fishing on the river near your house with the 9-meter whip and I’ve caught lots of fish so far, would you like to come and take some pictures?” he says. I take a look at the watch: thirty past three in the afternoon and I have to be at 5 o’clock at my workplace; only an hour for some shots and then go to make a living. I don’t think it twice: take my Alpha 700 and boots.

La camicia bianca stirata a perfezione, il papillon al collo, le scarpe tirate a lucido; tutto è pronto per l’ennesima serata lavorativa quando il telefono si mette a strillare… il mio amico Giampaolo: “Sto pescando sul fiume vicino a casa tua usando una canna fissa di 9 metri e ho preso un sacco di pesce, vuoi venire a fare qualche foto?” mi dice. Guardo l’orologio: le tre e mezza del pomeriggio; ci metterò venti minuti per raggiungere il fiume per poi essere alle 5 in punto sul posto di lavoro. Solo un’ora per qualche scatto e poi via, a guadagnarsi la pagnotta. Non ci penso due volte: prendo la mia Alpha 700 e gli stivali.

When I arrive on the banks the sun has just begun its downfall into the west, not much left before sunset. Giampaolo has been here since noon to maximize the central, warmer hours of the day; he’s using a whip produced until some time ago in a factory that was located in the northeast of the peninsula, a product at the top of the range as long as the manufacturer existed. The depth of this river is about 5 meters with a current rather strong; the only way to act in the line near the bottom is to concentrate the ballast on a bulk fixed at 60 cm away from the hook. It’s very basic and hardly able to deceive chubs, but for all the other fish will be perfect.

Quando arrivo sulla sponda il sole ha iniziato la sua fase discendente verso occidente, non manca molto al tramonto. Giampaolo è qui da mezzogiorno per sfruttare al massimo le ore centrali della giornata, quelle più calde; sta usando una canna fissa prodotta fino a qualche tempo fa in una fabbrica che aveva sede nel nordest della penisola, un prodotto al top di gamma fino a quando la casa costruttrice è esistita. La profondità di questo fiume si aggira sui 5 metri con una corrente piuttosto forte; l’unico modo per far agire la lenza in prossimità del fondo è quello di concentrare la maggior parte della zavorra in un bulk a 60 centimetri dall’amo. È molto spartana e difficilmente riuscirà a ingannare i cavedani, ma per il resto della fauna ittica sarà perfetta.

The plate floats are best for fishing on the bottom in a strong flow, in theory to be used strictly on lines for roubaisienne. They come in many forms and each company has its own recipes; what you see in the picture are prototypes of Triana that have never entered production due to its going under (note the handwritten values of weight). You shouldn’t be using thin lines with this kind of fishing: a large diameter nylon works better among the turbolences that show up in such dynamic environments. The one used by Giampaolo was a 0.16 millimetres mainline.

I galleggianti piatti sono i più indicati per pescare sul fondo in forti correnti, in teoria da usare rigorosamente su lenze da roubaisienne. Ne esistono di molte forme e ogni azienda ha le sue ricette; quelli che vedete nella foto sono dei prototipi della Triana che non sono mai entrati in produzione a causa del fallimento (notate i valori della grammatura scritti a mano). Non si usano mai lenze sottili in questo tipo di pesca, non avrebbe senso: un nylon di grosso spessore riesce a lavorare meglio tra le turbolenze che si sviluppano in ambienti così dinamici. Quella usata da Giampaolo era una lenza madre di 0.16 millimetri.

Giampaolo has fished with a 9-meter fix rod, which has allowed him to have a manageable bannière; the float added to the line was a new design model made by Bacci, the company of Bologna. I hadn’t heard of this model before, but seeing the keepnet full of fish it seems to work pretty well.

Giampaolo ha pescato con una canna fissa di 9 metri, cosa che gli ha permesso di avere una bannière facilmente gestibile; il galleggiante inserito in lenza era un modello di nuova concezione prodotto dalla ditta Bacci di Bologna. Non conoscevo questo modello fino a questo momento, ma in base alla nassa di pesce che ha realizzato mi sembra funzionare piuttosto bene.

Structurally very similar to a conventional float, but to which the antenna and drift were not inserted at the ends, that is, with an unusual angle. At the lower end has instead found place the ring, from which the line comes out of the body remaining well below the water surface. It’s a product designed for pole fishing, but can be used with whips when the water depth is substantial and the free line above the free surface is limited to only a few meters.

Strutturalmente assomiglia molto a un classico galleggiante al quale l’antenna e la deriva sono state inserite non alle estremità, bensì con un angolo insolito. All’estremo inferiore trova posto l’anellino, per cui il filo fuoriesce dal corpo del segnalatore restando abbondantemente sotto la superficie dell’acqua. È un prodotto nato per la pesca con la roubaisienne, ma può essere usato con la canna fissa quando la profondità dell’acqua è notevole e il filo libero sopra la superficie è limitato a pochi metri.

Sticky maggots represent the best choice in the case where the chubs are the most active species; the amount of quartzite to be inserted must be always very high, otherwise there will be an excessive descent downstream of the call. In this river the depth exceeds 5 meters below the top and the sea is just a few miles away: the water flow is very strong during low tides.

I bigattini incollati rappresentano la scelta migliore nel caso in cui i cavedani siano la specie più attiva; la quantità di quarzite da inserire deve essere sempre molto elevata, pena un’eccessiva discesa a valle del richiamo. In questo fiume la profondità supera i 5 metri sotto la punta della lunga canna fissa e con una linea di costa distante solo pochi chilometri il flusso d’acqua è molto forte nelle ore di bassa marea.

If species as brèam, roach and carp are predominant then one should also use groundbait. It’s important that it comes well loaded with earth.

Se le specie di fondo come brème, gardon e carpe sono predominanti allora conviene usare anche lo sfarinato. Importante è che venga ben appesantito con terra.

The warm light of a cold winter evening. It wasn’t an easy day today: the NE wind colled Bora has blown all day and without gloves the hands froze in a few seconds; it was a pain every time that I removed them from the pockets to take some shots. In this photo Giampaolo is trying the roubaisienne, uselessly: he added too little gravel in the sticky maggots and even a bit of ground into the groundbait, so that the call dropped on the bottom few meters downstream. He has captured all the fish thanks to the long bannière of its 9-meter whip. Beyond the canes that you see across the river lies the northern part of the lagoon of Venice.

La calda luce di un freddo tramonto invernale. Non è stata una giornata facile quella di oggi: un gelido vento di Bora ha soffiato per tutto il giorno e senza guanti le mani gelavano in pochi secondi; è stata una sofferenza ogni volta che le toglievo dalle tasche per fare qualche scatto. In questa foto Giampaolo sta provando con la roubaisienne, inutilmente: aveva aggiunto troppa poca ghiaia nei bigattini incollati e nemmeno un po’ di terra nella pastura, sicché il richiamo era sceso sul fondo alcuni metri più a valle. Tutto il pesce di oggi è riuscito a catturarlo grazie alla lunga bannière della sua Triana di 9 metri. Oltre il canneto che vedete dall’altra parte del fiume si estende la parte settentrionale della laguna di Venezia.

One of many preys finished in the landing net; the brèam is not a fish that belongs to the fauna of the peninsula, but was imported from matchanglers for competitions’ sake (like also the roach).

Una delle tante catture finite nel guadino; la brème non è un pesce che appartiene alla fauna della penisola, ma è stata importata dai garisti per questioni agonistiche (così come il gardon).

Unlike the rest of Europe, in the waters of the Italian peninsula brèmes have got used to the maggots. When you insert some of red colour, it is very common that to bite is just a brèam; who knows, maybe they take it for a larva of Chironomid.

A differenza che nel resto d’Europa, nelle acque della penisola italica le brèmes si sono abituate ai bigattini. Quando ne innescate qualcuno di colore rosso, è molto facile che ad abboccare sia proprio l’abramide; chissà, forse lo scambia per una larva di chironomide.

The carp is another welcome guest who comes when the fishing line is made to work in contact with the bottom; the larger ones almost always escape in the case you’re fishing with long poles or with whips. They have too much strength and are helped by the environment: when grown in deep and good quality waters like these, the chances of success are all on their side.

La carpa è un altro gradito ospite che viene a trovarci quando la lenza viene fatta lavorare a contatto con il fondo; gli esemplari più grossi quasi sempre se ne vanno nel caso in cui si stia pescando in roubaisienne o con la canna fissa. Hanno troppo forza e l’ambiente le aiuta: quando crescono in acque profonde e di buona qualità come queste le probabilità di successo sono tutte dalla loro parte.

Giampaolo is a matchangler and when I saw the box he used to contain the maggots I couldn’t suppress a smile: it was a can of tuna. I used it myself many years ago when I started to fish… I was a child and the earthworms were my baits.

Giampaolo è un garista e quando ho visto la scatola che ha usato per contenere i bigattini non ho potuto trattenere un sorriso: era una scatola di tonno. La usavo anch’io tanti anni fa quando da bambino iniziai a pescare… l’esca erano i lombrichi.

A hook of generous size: when the fish are active it’s a nonsense to use light terminals. About 20 centimeters of 0.10 mm as final are more than sufficient to complete a line of 8 grams with a down-balanced ballast.

Un amo di generose dimensioni: quando il pesce si dimostra attivo e ben disposto all’abboccata non ha senso usare terminali da vers de vase. Circa 20 centimetri di finale delli 0.10 sono più che sufficienti per completare una lenza di 8 grammi con una zavorra molto raccolta verso il basso.

This was one of the first fish caught by Giampaolo: a wonderful tench just over a kilogram. This is an increasingly rare animal to find in the waters of the peninsula and when he told me he’d be taken home to bake in the oven, I replied: “There are no tench-eaters among my friends”.

Questo è stato uno dei primi pesci catturati da Giampaolo: una meravigliosa tinca di poco oltre il chilogrammo. Si tratta di un pesce sempre più raro da trovare nelle acque della penisola e quando mi ha detto che se la sarebbe portata a casa per cuocerla al forno, io gli ho risposto: “Non ci sono mangiatori di tinche tra i miei amici”.

The tench is back in the water along with the other fish and I like to think it’s still swimming in the river Sile. Unfortunately in these waters some sheatfish were let loose, so that the existence of the placid tenches is in further danger; years ago an animal of this size would not find predators in the bottom, but today things have changed and you can’t be sure that fish is still alive.

La tinca è tornata in acqua assieme agli altri pesci e mi piace pensare che stia ancora nuotando nel Sile. Purtroppo in queste acque sono stati liberati dei siluri, sicché l’esistenza di questo placido animale è stata messa in ulteriore pericolo; in altri anni un animale di questa taglia non avrebbe trovato predatori sui fondali, ma oggi le cose sono cambiate e non è detto che quel pesce sia ancora vivo.

This is the result of a few hours of fishing in the big freeze; the red fins that glimpse through the mesh of the keepnet are those of the roach, another alien species well acclimatized into the Italic waters. Notice how the carp, the tench and some rare chubs are the only autochthonous fish.

Questo è il risultato di alcune ore di pesca al gelo; le pinne rosse che si intravvedono attraverso la maglia della nassa sono quelle dei gardon, altro pesce straniero ben ambientatosi nelle acque italiche. Notate come solo la carpa, la tinca e qualche raro cavedano rappresentino gli unici pesci autoctoni.

River Lemene, Christmas eve. I asked my friend Giampaolo Borile to come fishing with me for a few hours using long whips to catch many triotti, a traditional tecnic in the northeastern part of the peninsula. I had worked until 6 am that day, so I arrived on the bank just after noon; when I got there I saw something strange: Giampaolo was launching maggots, but triotti usually bite on groundbait with heavy lines. He told me: “Sorry but today seemed a day for chubs… I’ve left home all the other lines and brought just few maggots”. It was my fault, I told him to go after only one kind of fish using a specialistic fishing technique; it had been a rash act.

Fiume Lemene, vigilia di Natale. Ho chiesto al mio amico Giampaolo Borile la disponibilità per una pescata ai triotti con canne fisse, tecnica tradizionale nel nord est della penisola. Quel giorno avevo lavorato fino alle 6 del mattino, sicchè arrivai sul posto solo nel primo pomeriggio a giochi quasi conclusi. Appena messo piede sull’argine notai qualcosa di strano: Giampaolo stava fiondando bigattini, quando invece per i triotti si usa pastura e lenze pesanti. Nel vedermi disse: “Spiacente, ma questa era proprio una giornata da cavedani… ho lasciato a casa le lenze leggere e avevo poche larve”. Lo sbaglio è stato mio, sono stato io a chiedergli di impostare la pesca solo su un tipo di pesce con una tecnica molto specialistica; veramente un’imprudenza.

This little fish only lives in the northern Italic peninsula, Switzerland, Slovenia and Croatia; bigger than bleak, gregarious, it’s at the base of the food chain. The triotto (Rutilus erithrophtalmus, or aula) is related closely with the gardon (or roach if you prefer, Rutilus rutilus) and is often difficult to distinguish: our little friend has a white belly, bronze lateral stripes and a dark back, while the gardon/roach has red fins and little bit wider scales, but in particular conditions the first one can show a light livrea and the second one discoloured fins, so they’re almost indistinguishable. These two species are so similar that can interbreed to give hybrids; anyway the roach is stronger and more intrusive than his little Italic cousin and at the end it will remain the only one. I’m very sorry to have to admit it, but the primary responsible for this, still in progress, ecological disaster are matchanglers and their federation, which even provides vehicles for the transport and spread of alien species in waters where these aren’t yet present. It’s the usual tragic italian job.

Questo piccolo pesce vive solo nel nord della penisola italica, in Svizzera, in Slovenia e Croazia; più grande dell’alborella, gregario anch’esso, ne condivide la base della catena alimentare. Il triotto è strettamente imparentato con il gardon al punto che talvolta è difficile distinguerli: il nostro piccolo amico ha un ventre bianco, fasce laterali bronzee e un dorso scuro, mentre il gardon è caratterizzato da pinne rosse e scaglie un po’ più grandi. In particolari condizioni il primo può mostrare una livrea chiara, e il secondo presentarsi con pinne di colorazione neutra, pertanto essere quasi indistinguibili. Il gardon è più rustico e invadente rispetto al suo piccolo cugino italico, sicché alla fine sarà il solo a popolare le acque in cui le due specie attualmente convivono. Mi dispiace doverlo ammettere, ma i primi responsabili di questo disastro ecologico tutt’ora in atto sono i garisti e la loro federazione, la quale addirittura provvede a fornire veicoli attrezzati per il trasporto e la diffusione di specie alloctone. La solita tragica porcata all’italiana.

Triotto likes both sweet or salty groundbait, as long as it’s dark in colour; Giampaolo is used to adding coriander and cocoa to improve it, and of course ground when there’s a heavy stream. Unlike groundbait for bleaks, it must be heavy to work near the bottom.

Al triotto piace sia la pastura dolce che quella salata, l’importante è che abbia colore scuro; Giampaolo usa abitualmente aggiungerci coriandolo e cacao per migliorarne le caratteristiche, oltre che ovviamente terra nel caso di forti correnti. A differenza della pastura per alborelle, dovrà essere pesante per agire vicino al fondo.

There doesn’t seem to be anything interesting in this picture, instead the mounds of loose soil by moles along the banks are perfect to load the groundbait when you have to fish in rivers with fast flows. It has two important features: is free and contains no fertilizers or pesticides.

Sembra non esserci alcunché di interessante in questa foto, e invece i cumuli di terra creati dalle talpe lungo le sponde sono perfetti per appesantire la pastura nei casi si debba pescare in fiumi dalle correnti veloci. Questa soluzione gode di due importanti qualità: è gratis e non contiene né fertilizzanti né pesticidi.

There was once a very important company which produced and distributed every kind of fishing gear using its own brand, and above all every kind of rod for other famous companies: its name was Triana and based at just 20 minutes away from here. I’m sure, you’ll surely remember the “white carbon” used to build its roubaisiennes, a novelty introduced by Triana a decade ago that allowed low temperatures during summer time; a trend followed by other manufacturers. A few years ago I spoke a couple of times with the business owner, Mr Onofri, remaining disconcerted: I thought I didn’t understand anything about the fishing world, and believe in me, it wasn’t pleasant. During summer 2009 I heard the news of Triana’s closure, that proved my opinions were correct (fortunately or unfortunately, still I don’t know what’s best). By the way, every time you’ll see the logo Triana in evidence in a picture of mine, consider it as a tribute to a historical trade mark of my country.

C’era una volta un’azienda molto importante che produceva e distribuiva ogni sorta di attrezzature da pesca con il proprio brand, ma soprattutto ogni tipo di canne per altre ditte del settore: il suo nome era Triana e aveva sede a soli 20 minuti da qui. Ne sono certo, sicuramente vi ricordate il celebre “carbonio bianco” con cui erano realizzate le sue roubaisienne, una novità introdotta da questa azienda un decennio fa che aveva il pregio di abbassare la temperatura del fusto quando usato sotto il sole estivo; si trattò di un’idea copiata in seguito da altri costruttori. Alcuni anni fa ebbi modo di parlare con il proprietario, il signor Onofri, rimanendo ogni volta perplesso: ero arrivato a pensare di non aver capito nulla del mondo della pesca sportiva e, credetemi, non è stato piacevole. Durante l’estate 2009 mi giunse la notizia della chiusura di Triana, cosa che convalidò la mia visione su questo mercato (fortunatamente o sfortunatamente, ancora non so dirmi cosa sia meglio). Ad ogni modo, ogni volta che vedrete il logo Triana sulle mie foto consideratelo un tributo a pezzo di storia della mia terra.

A few seconds yet and the fish will be netted; with lighter lines many other chubs would have entered the keepnet.

Alcuni secondi ancora e il pesce sarà nel guadino. Con una lenza più leggera molti altri cavedani sarebbero finiti col fargli compagnia in nassa.

My friend sometimes forgets to be a good angler when he tries to remove the hook with bare hands: it’s a bad practice.

Qualche volta il mio amico si dimentica di essere un buon pescatore, come ora mentre tenta di rimuovere l’amo direttamente con le dita: è una pessima cosa.

Always with the disgorger: this is the only way to free the animals’ mouths from hooks avoiding damages.

Sempre con lo slamatore: è l’unico modo di togliere l’amo dalla bocca dell’animale senza provocargli danni.

Giampaolo’s haul? Not exacly: I had phoned him before leaving home to hear how it was going, receiving a not enthusiastic response. “There’s a young angler – he said – who’s catching beautiful chubs with a light line, but he’s about to leave: I’ll ask him to leave his fish because I guess they are an interesting catch”. The young angler had already left when I arrived.

Le catture di Giampaolo? Non del tutto: gli telefonai da casa prima di partire per sapere come stesse andando la pesca, senza però ricevere la risposta che avrei voluto. “C’è un giovane pescatore – mi disse – che sta catturando bei cavedani usando una lenza leggera, ma sta per andarsene: gli chiederò di lasciarmi i suoi pesci perché credo siano interessanti”. L’altro pescatore se ne era già andato quando arrivai io.

This is the best chub of the day, the best one caught by Alberto (that’s the name of the other angler). What you shoud note isn’t its bronze livrea, typical fot the fish of the river Lemene, but the large mouth’s deformation: too many people are free to fish in my country, people who haven’t anything to do with sportfishing. That’s the situation in free waters but believe me, in closed ponds it’s even worse.

Il miglior cavedano della giornata, catturato da Alberto (questo è il nome dell’altro pescatore). Ciò che dovreste notare non è la sua magnifica livrea bronza, tipica dei pesci di questo fiume, ma la grande deformazione che ha sulla bocca: a troppa gente viene concesso di poter pescare, personaggi che nulla hanno a che fare con la pesca sportiva; questa è la situazione nelle acque libere, ma credetemi che nei laghetti adibiti a carpodromo è assai peggiore.

This crucian carp shows a wound to the operculum completely healed: it isn’t a damage caused by reckless fishermen, but most likely by a cormorant. Now you know: along the rivers of my country circulate too many unwanted beasts.

Questo carassio mostra una ferita all’opercolo ora completamente guarita: non è un danno causato da negligenti, ma più verosimilmente da un cormorano. Ora lo sapete: lungo i fiumi del mio paese circolano troppe bestie indesiderate.

Gulls around here know that when an angler gets up and leaves, there’ll be a easy meal ready for them left behind.

I gabbiani di queste parti hanno imparato che quando un pescatore finisce ci sarà un pasto facile per loro.

The ancient Roman town of Iulia Concordia was not far from the coast, so the flow’s speed and the river Lemene’s level depend on the changing of tides; in the Mediterranean Sea tides aren’t as extreme as in the oceans, 1 meter at max. When Giampaolo began to fish this morning, the level of the water covered the stakes planted in support of the bank.

L’antica cittadina romana di Iulia Concordia non sorge lontana dalla costa, sicché la velocità della corrente e il livello del fiume Lemene mutano al variare delle maree; nel Mediterraneo queste non si presentano con picchi estremi come negli oceani, ma arrivano al massimo a un metro di escursione. Quando Giampaolo aveva iniziato a pescare questa mattina, il livello dell’acqua copriva i pali piantati a sostegno delle sponde.

Like the gulls, this nutria seems to come out of nowhere when the fishing is over: another kind of unwanted beast.

Come i gabbiani, anche questa nutria sembra spuntata dal nulla nel momento in cui si è conclusa la pesca; altro tipo di animale indesiderato.
