McGoldrick swings a good fish. He will win his section (5A, peg 2) with 24.400 kg. It starts to rain.

The first thing that Napoleon Bonaparte claimed to know from his generals were the details, and the details of an angler’s equipment have their own importance. Frances is using an old Tounament feeder rod, tool top class as would be expected from the winner of a Daiwa Cup.

Rory Smith. Peg 8 for him, the harder draw in 5A. He was casting his feeder close to 50 meters for his fish, but not as far as the boats that were passing.

Rory managed to sneak a skimmer that was very nearly a bream for the cameras (13,600 kg for him).

Dominic Allen (5B peg 6, 15.880 kg) swings a good fish, maybe too good to be captured without landing net.

Nigel Franks nets a fish. His feeder rod has a perfect action, too bad that from the photos you cannot understand the model and manufacturer.

This photo of Nigel is interesting because it allows you to appreciate a detail of his equipment.

The other half of the pair number 33: Dave Brettle’s catch (5B peg 1, 22.920 kg). The end pegs have dominated the section with fish for either peg 1 or 13 turning up late. Today was no exception, with current pairs leader Dave Brettell adding 23 kg to his account.

Mr Hughes with a nice hybrid. Well, when I saw this picture for the first time I thought: Alan Scottorne! You have to admit: there is an undeniable similarity.

The other half of the 2012 winner pair won his section with a display of perfect feeder fishing (16.300 kg). His strategy: bunches of red maggots on the hook and a very dark groundbait mix with just a few casters and a pinch of chopped worms added.

Ron with the classic Shannon breams, dark backed and with a love for worms. “I like to catch them” said the olandese, “so today was very nice for me. My 9 kg net was second in the section, so it was very close to winning but Philip beat me by 500 grams.” Ron’s favourite venue is Garadice, where he’ll be on the last day.

End of day one. 2012 Pairs Champion Cathal Hughes and Philip Jackson, with more than 26 kg in the bag, are not the lead yet. The best pair today: Frances McGoldrick and Dave Brettell with 46.540 kg, and Mr McGoldrick (individual last year’s winner) is also the leader of the Daiwa Cup with 30.640 kg.

A few days ago I received a very interesting email from Steve Lockett, who proposed me to publish a short article about the World Pairs Angling Championship, competitive event in five days that will take place next week in Irish waters. It’s not a difficult text, so I propose it without translation. The 2013 World Pairs Angling Championships will get under way on 8^th September with the draw for daily sections. Fishing five days from 9^th to 13^th September. There are still places available.

This event is already one of the richest around, with 30,000 euros guaranteed to be shared amongst the top ten pairs, plus individual tackle prizes from Daiwa. The winners will pick up 16,000 euros and the top three all receive crystal trophies. Last year’s event showcased the fabolous fishing, using a range of styles, on natural venues across Northern Ireland and the Republic.

This year’s event will be staged across the counties of Leitrim, Cavan and Fermanagh, in stunning scenery. Entries cost £170 per pairs, with a generous discount of £30 per pair if the ticket is booked through event travel partner http://www.irelandtravelplus.co.uk/. Individual entries cost an extra £140, giving daily section and county payouts, plus an overall top ten.

The individual champion will pick up the Daiwa Cup, and a share of the £6500 tackle voucher sponsorship from the UK’ top tackle manufacturer. Fishing licenses (needed for Fermanagh county) are provided by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL). The event organisers will provide each pair with maps and GPS coordinates to the venues.
