Last month (8th-10th November) was to take place the 2013 edition of the FishingShow, the largest Italian show dedicated to the sport fishing, which is usually housed at the exhibition halls in Bologna. 2013 edition of the FishingShow was not held, it is skipped and officially postponed to the next year in conjunction with the Eudishow, the diving exhibition (14th-17th March). Farsighted choice, even because it offers the opportunity to access to two events by paying only one ticket. A doubt remains: this year the Motor Show didn’t take place because of the crisis, and whether an event like the Motorshow is canceled…

Lo scorso mese di novembre si sarebbe dovuta svolgere l’edizione 2013 del FishingShow, la più grande fiera italica dedicata al mondo della pesca sportiva che si tiene di solito nei padiglioni espositivi della città di Bologna. L’edizione 2013 del FishingShow non si è tenuta. È letteralmente saltata, rinviata al marzo del prossimo anno in concomitanza con l’EudiShow, la fiera della subacquea. Scelta lungimirante, anche per il fatto di offrire ai visitatori la possibilità di accedere a due manifestazioni pagando un solo biglietto. Permane un dubbio: quest’anno non si è disputato nemmeno il Motorshow a causa della grande crisi, e se una manifestazione come il Motorshow viene annullata…

To those who wanted to visit the fair last month, I suggest this article about the 2012 edition. I must say that if this year’s edition of FishingShow had the ambition to follow the formula of 2012, then who tells you that its cancellation is bad? A coloro che avrebbero voluto visitare la fiera lo scorso mese di novembre, propongo questo articolo relativo all’edizione 2012. Misty is the name of this wonderful female of American Pitt Bull Terrier remained out of the fair with her masters. The regulation prohibits her the access, and no matter if she’s cleaner and more educated than many bipeds: rules are rules, and they enforce the laws when it suits. Patience, even though I must admit that if she had not been excluded, perhaps I would never took this portraits.

Misty, così si chiama questa meravigliosa femmina di American Pitt Bull Terrier rimasta fuori dalla fiera assieme ai suoi padroni. Il regolamento le vieta l’accesso e poco importa se lei sia più pulita ed educata di tanti bipedi: le regole sono regole, e quando fa comodo si fanno rispettare. Pazienza, anche se devo ammettere che se non fosse stata esclusa, forse non sarei mai arrivato a scattarle dei ritratti.

The classic misleading photo. Quando era ancora una cucciolotta, Misty ha cominciato a fare una cosa straordinaria: vedendo i suoi padroni ridere, le li imitava socchiudendo gli occhi e sollevando ripetutamente le labbra. Silenziosamente, senza abbaiare o ringhiare. E lo fa ogni volta che è contenta, come quando riceve una carezza da parte di uno sconosciuto. Se non vi è mai capitato di vederne uno prima, questo è il sorriso di un cane. Misty è unica!

It is the curiosity that pushes people to get up early in the morning, to refuel the car, to travel for many kilometers, to tackle the gypsies which infest the car park and to buy a ticket. Curiosity, but also the pleasure of discovering new things. And every time I feel like this kid eager to peep what’s going to happen.

É la curiosità che spinge ad alzarsi presto la mattina, a fare il pieno all’auto, a macinare chilometri su chilometri, ad affrontare gli zingari che infestano il parcheggio, e a pagare un biglietto d’ingresso. Curiosità, ma anche il piacere per la scoperta di cose nuove. E ogni volta confesso di sentirmi un po’ come questo ragazzino ansioso di sbirciare in punta di piedi quello che sta per succedere.

There are not only well-known brands and widely distributed industrial products, but also prototypes like theese seen at the edge of a pool.

Non ci sono solo marchi noti e prodotti industriali di larga diffusione, ma anche prototipi come questi visti a bordo di una delle vasche presenti.

I don’t know if they were hand made by an amateur or if they were prototypes of some company in the sport fishing industry, anyway these jointed minnow showed an excellent behavior in water.

Non so dire se fossero stati realizzati a mano da un appassionato o se fossero dei prototipi di qualche azienda del settore, sta di fatto che questi minnow snodati mostravano un eccellente comportamento in acqua.

I believe that the lead wire inserted into the rings would serve to balance the bait in the water, simulating the presence of the hooks. A safty factor for the spectators around there.

Credo che il filo di piombo inserito negli anelli servisse a bilanciare l’assetto dell’esca in acqua, simulando nel contempo la presenza delle ancorette. Un fattore di sicurezza considerando gli spettatori tutt’attorno.

Questa potrebbe sembrare un’immagine interessate: interessante per la luce, interessante per il soggetto e interessante anche per la ripresa dal basso. Purtroppo è una foto affetta da un difetto.

The extreme close-ups shots are characterized from a limited depth of field, or the area in which the image is perfectly sharp. Even if it’s foregone, the focus point must agree with the subject’s eyes, otherwise it will be a photo to declare. Unfortunately this is the case of the squid jig you see: the focus is slightly set back from the red eye. National Geographic would never have published it.

Le inquadrature ravvicinate impongono una limitata profondità di campo, ovvero dell’area in cui l’immagine è perfettamente nitida. Anche se sembra inutile doverlo spiegare, il punto di fuoco deve coincidere con gli occhi del soggetto; diversamente sarà una foto da scartare. Purtroppo questo è il caso della totanara che vedete: la messa a fuoco è leggermente arretrata rispetto al bulbo rosso. National Geographic non me l’avrebbe mai pubblicata.

I took this photo of the poster at the entrance of a stand. A very good image, except for the fact that it’s not a real photograph: is a montage as you can see from the point where the hooks’ tips emerge from the mouth. Anyway, the effect is guaranteed.

Ho scattato questa fotografia al manifesto posto all’ingresso di uno degli stand. Un’immagine d’impatto, nulla da dire, se non fosse che non si tratta di una vera fotografia: è un fotomontaggio come potete notare dal punto in cui le punte dell’ancoretta emergono dalla bocca del luccio. Ad ogni modo, l’effetto è garantito.

The added value in this image is in the discreet smile, which saves it from the limbo of the trivial shots. However, like the previous one also this image is affected by a focus error: to be focused is the closest subject, or the wrong one. Not even this picture will be published on the National Geographic magazine. By the way, the reels they are handling are American war machines by ZeeBaaS.

Il valore aggiunto in questa immagine sta nel sorriso discreto del soggetto in secondo piano, che la salva dal limbo degli scatti banali. Tuttavia, come la precedente, anche questa è affetta da un errore di messa a fuoco: a essere nitido è il soggetto in primo piano, ovvero quello sbagliato. Non dovevo essere in gran forma quel giorno… nemmeno questa finirà su National Geographic. A proposito, i mulinelli che stanno maneggiando sono macchine da guerra prodotte da ZeeBaaS.

I took these photos in the stand of a company which import plastic models of animals; the more interesting ones were hanging on the walls. The attention to detail was pretty good, although with some trimming. They’re ideal for those who want to take home a trophy without sacrificing the animal.

Ho scattato queste foto nello stand di un’azienda che importava modelli di animali in plastica di ogni dimensioni; quelli che interessavano di più ai pescatori erano appesi alle pareti. La cura dei particolari era abbastanza buona, anche se con qualche sbavatura. Rappresentano la soluzione ideale per coloro che vogliono portarsi a casa un trofeo senza sacrificare l’animale.

Horrible! Some model wasn’t so good like the others and only with a lot of imagination you can see a brown trout in this piece of molded plastic. The worst thing is the livery: Ray Charles would have painted it better.

Orrenda! Qualche modello non era all’altezza degli altri e solo con molta fantasia si può vedere una brown trout in questo pezzo di plastica stampata. La cosa peggiore è la livrea: Ray Charles l’avrebbe dipinta meglio.

Not only fish. Some models seemed very good, but never all the way: mammals have hair and also whiskers, that in certain animals are important sense organs.

Non solo pesci. Per quanto curati possono essere certi modelli, non lo sono mai fino in fondo: i mammiferi hanno peli, e pure i baffi che in certi animali sono organi di senso importanti.

Reptiles, like fish, don’t have hair or whiskers, and are easier to imitate. These models were really well done.

I rettili, come i pesci, non hanno peli né baffi e sono più semplici da imitare. Questi modellini erano davvero ben fatti.

An European tortoise and a Greek tortoise. Modern cameras are very advanced, but are not able to understand where focusing a subject at close range. Even with all the technology they contain, are basically very stupid objects and you can only capture photos like these respecting two rules: using a reflex camera and set it to manual focus. My photos are always taken respecting these two dogmas, which give also another great advantage: if a picture is not perfeclty clear, I always know who to blame.

Una testuggine europea e una testuggine greca. Per quanto avanzate siano le macchine fotografiche moderne, esse non sono in grado di comprendere in quale punto focheggiare un soggetto ravvicinato. Pur con tutta la tecnologia che contengono, sono fondamentalmente degli oggetti molto sciocchi e foto come queste potete scattarle solo rispettando due regole: usare una reflex, e impostarla in manual focus. Le mie foto sono sempre scattate rispettando questi due dogmi, che in più danno anche un altro grande vantaggio: se una foto non è perfettamente nitida, so sempre a chi dare la colpa.

This gentleman is Moreno Calzavara, owner of the largest sport fishing store around the north east, as well as importer of P-Line’s products for the north Italy. Even before to realize what he was doing, I told him that he had made a serious strategic error. Then he asked me: ‘What mistake?’ Surely you understand it looking at this picture: an operation like this, apart from any technical reason, had to be make by a young lady in a miniskirt, that in a fair like this with a strong male presence would have had a devastating success. Then Moreno replied with a smile: ‘Actually, you’re not the first one that tell me about it…’

Questo signore è Moreno Calzavara, titolare del più grande negozio di pesca sportiva di tutto il nord east, oltre che importatore per la penisola dei prodotti P-Line. Prima ancora di capire cosa stesse facendo, gli dissi che aveva commesso un grave errore strategico. Lui allora sorpreso mi chiese: ‘Quale errore?’ Sicuramente lo avrete capito anche voi guardando questa foto: un’operazione come questa, a prescindere da qualsiasi considerazione tecnica, andava fatta fare a una signorina in minigonna, cosa che in una fiera a forte presenza maschile avrebbe avuto un successo devastante. Allora Moreno mi rispose sorridendo: ‘In effetti non sei il primo che me lo fa presente…’

I will not explain in details the operation you see in these pictures, because you will find lots of interesting information in the Web. Here I only say that the Stop Glue (take a look also to the orizontal menù) is not a crystallizing glue, but a real sealing system that allows to combine wires of different nature and diameters leaving unchanged the breaking strenght (each knot in a line is a point of weakness). A knot-free system so innovative that obtained an official prize to the Efttex Awards 2011.

Non vi spiegherò nei dettagli le operazioni che vedete in queste foto, anche perché trovate molte informazioni sul Web. Qui vi dico solo che lo Stop Glue non è un è un collante cianoacrilico, ma un vero e proprio sistema saldante che permette di unire senza nodi filati di varia natura lasciandone invariati i carichi di rottura (i nodi rappresentano punti di criticità), un sistema talmente innovativo da ottenere un riconoscimento ufficiale agli Efftex Awards del 2011.

The next feeder world championship will be held in Ireland, where in September he was runner up in the World Pairs Championship both in the individual and in the pairs ranking with his brother Phil. I confess I was surprised to see a stand with Preston Innovations’ products, as I cannot hide some perplexity. My personal opinion is that the Italian market is armoured, or no much receptive and extremely difficult for those foreign players who wish to deal it in theese years. Not only because of the crisis (and the Italiot ruling class) that has literally sunk the country, but also for another factor even more difficult. Nationalism has nothing to do. Italians are not nationalists, on the contrary: considering the independence movements that developed in the north, south and in each of the two main islands, I would say that they are diametrically opposed to the French. From this point of view, Italic market is much easier than the French one. The situation is another: Italy is surrounded by a wonderful sea, as there are many rivers flowing on its territory, so it was inevitable that were founded lots of companies in the area, firms often started by the opening of a store or a simple laboratory in the sixties and seventies, and then developed at the international level. Anyway, best wishes to Preston and to those who are believing in this business.

Non nascondo di essere stato sorpreso nel vedere per la prima volta uno stand con i prodotti di Preston Innovations, così come non posso nascondere una certa perplessità. Mia personale opinione è che il mercato italiano sia blindato, ovvero poco recettivo e tremendamente difficile per quei player esteri che intendano affrontarlo in questi anni. Non solo per l’effetto devastante derivato dal mix di una classe dirigente infima e della grande crisi che han affossato la penisola, ma sopratutto per un altro fattore ancora più ostico. Il nazionalismo non centra nulla: gli italiani non sono nazionalisti, anzi, considerando i movimenti indipendentisti che si sono sviluppati a nord, a sud e in ciascuna delle due isole maggiori, direi proprio che sono agli antipodi rispetto ai francesi. Da questo punto di vista, il mercato italico è molto più facile di quello transalpino. La questione è un’altra: l’Italia è circondata da un mare meraviglioso, così come molti sono in fiumi che vi scorrono; era inevitabile che in un territorio con queste caratteristiche sorgessero numerose aziende del settore (come del resto in quello nautico e della subacquea), realtà spesso partite dall’apertura da un negozio o di un semplice laboratorio negli anni cinquanta-sessanta, per poi svilupparsi a livello internazionale nelle decadi successive. A ogni modo, auguri a Preston e a coloro che ci stanno credendo.

I have a great admiration for the fly fishing and for those who practice it, and in recent years I tried many times to get interested in this fishing style. I have never been able, too bad.

Provo una grande ammirazione per la pesca a mosca e per coloro che la praticano, al punto che in passato più volte ho cercato a di appassionarmi a questo stile di pesca, senza però mai riuscirci. Peccato.

Being able to create something alive starting from inert matter is simply fascinating. These are only two wonders that can be seen in the stands dedicated to fly fishing.

Riuscire a creare qualcosa di vivo partendo da materia inerte è semplicemente affascinante. Queste sono solo due delle realizzazioni che si possono ammirare negli stand dedicati al fly fishing.

I don’t know who’s this gentleman, but judging by the G-Loomis jersey he wore, was to be an important one.

Non so chi fosse questo signore, ma a giudicare dalla maglia della G-Loomis che indossava doveva essere un tipo importante.

Mr Francesco Palù is instead one of those men that have made the history of fishing in the peninsula, and is known even by those who don’t ever handled a fly rod in their lives. He lives in Friuli, in the north east, where in he founded a company specialized in very high quality fly fishing products.

Palù invece è uno di quei personaggi che hanno fatto la storia della pesca in Italia, ed è conosciuto anche da coloro che una canna a mosca non l’anno mai maneggiata in vita loro. Vive in Friuli dove ha fondato una sua azienda specializzata in prodotti di altissima qualità.

Canne da mosca anch’esse realizzate a mano da abili artigiani, una forma d’arte esclusa dai moderni cicli produttivi a catena di montaggio. Gli artigiani italiani sono riuniti in un’associazione chiamata IBRA, che ha pubblicato uno dei siti più interessanti rinvenibili sul web.

Colui che realizzò questo kit da viaggio è morto da tempo. Quello che vedete è un pezzo unico al mondo, come spesso accade nell’artigianato di alto livello.

Another interesting part in every FishingShow, and believe me when I tell you that it’s much more than many business stand: stalls dedicated to the old fishing equipment. In the picture there are three collectors of antique reels: Renzo Di Paolo (top left), Silvano Baraldi(top right) and Lino Galeotti. If you have old reels, objects of all kinds, magazines or catalogs that you want to assign, then I suggest you talk together.

Altro angolo molto interessante presente a ogni FishingShow, e credetemi quando vi dico che lo è molto più di tanti stand aziendali: le bancherelle dedicate alle vecchie attrezzature da pesca. Nella foto compaiono tre appassionati collezionisti di antichi mulinelli: Renzo Di Paolo (in alto a sinistra), Silvano Baraldi (in alto a destra) e naturalmente Lino Galeotti. Se avete vecchi mulinelli, oggetti di ogni tipo, riviste o cataloghi che volete cedere, allora vi consiglio di parlarci assieme.

For the benefit of those who have not guessed it, this photo was taken at the Renzo Di Paolo’s stall; he’s a big reel collector who created the website ANTIPES. ‘Cerco vecchi mulinelli anche non funzionanti, no Japan, no Korea’ (e no China, ovviamente); a beneficio di chi non l’avesse intuito, questa foto è stata scattata alla bancarella di Renzo Di Paolo, grandissimo appassionato di collezionismo alla cui iniziativa si deve la nascita del sito ANTIPES. Investiteci un pò di tempo per visitarlo: ne vale la pena! Some Italian reels made by a firm extinct for many years. Some time ago, was founded a company which use the name Alcedo, but of course all its production has oriental origins, and I think that has nothing to do with the historic brand.

Tempo fa è stata fondata una ditta commerciale che usa lo storico nome Alcedo, ma ovviamente tutta la sua produzione ha origini orientali, e credo che non abbia nulla a che spartire con lo storico marchio.

The models that you can buy from these gentlemen are fully functional, as this fast Mitchell 810 loaded with sinking line for English style (note the 6:1 gear ratio on the handle). They may also be used in high-level competitions, such as in the river Mincio at Peschiera del Garda, where is still practice a refined Bolognese style.

The result of another art form: the ones you see are whips made of natural cane by a famous craftsman who had his own workshop here in Bologna. The sixties and seventies of the last century was the heyday of sport fishing in Italy, and in this city there were almost two hundred fishing shops.

Il risultato di un’altra forma d’arte: quelle che vedete sono canne fisse realizzate in canna naturale da un celebre artigiano che aveva il suo laboratorio proprio qui, a Bologna. Gli anni cinquanta, sessanta e settanta dello scorso secolo furono il periodo d’oro della pesca in Italia e solo qui, in questa città, c’erano oltre duecento negozi di pesca.

‘Vig-Pao’ is part of the surnames of Gino Vigarani and Gianfranco Paolucci. Vigarani was the first individual world champion in the history of the World Freshwater Angling Championship and you can find his name at the top of this list (or of this one), while Paolucci is the joiner who during the fifties was converted to fishing and from whose hands were born the jewels you see above. To them we owe the birth of the fishing technique which takes its name from the city of Bologna.

Vig-Pao, ovvero parte dei cognomi di Gino Vigarani e Gianfranco Paolucci. Vigarani è stato il primo campione del mondo individuale nella storia dell’agonismo (il suo nome lo trovate in cima a questa lista), mentre Paolucci è il falegname che durante gli anni cinquanta si convertì alla pesca e dalle cui mani nacquero i gioielli che vedete. A loro si deve la nascita della tecnica di pesca che prende il nome dalla città di Bologna.

Inside one of the display cases there were also these two very special minnows: when it say that the best bait have to capture before the angler than the fish… This was also the last picture I took that day inside the fair, and I hope not the last one ever in the FishingShow in Bologna. We’ll see.

Lo scorso maggio a Milano un clandestino con una fedina penale lunga come un romanzo ottocentesco, e nonostante questo rilasciato a piede libero, entrò in un cantiere edile dove rubò un piccone col quale iniziò a uccidere chiunque incontrava sulla sua strada. Una scena da horror splatter di quart’ordine, di quelli in cui sono gli zombie a girare con i picconi. La motivazione per tanto orrore? Vi si avvicinerà chiedendovi qualche soldo per prendere il latte al bambino che ha tanta, ma proprio tanta fame e voi, spinti dal vostro gran cuore, inizierete a farvi del male con le vostre stesse mani: le darete un euro. That was the first time that I took part to the HuntingShow of Vicenza, a city located midway between Venice and Verona, and frankly I was not expecting a show so great. Much of the exhibition space was occupied by stands of hunting products companies, nevertheless the area used for predator fishing and flyfishing was also large.

Questa è stata la prima volta che partecipavo all’HuntingShow di Vicenza, città situata a metà strada tra Venezia e Verona, e francamente non mi aspettavo una fiera così grande. Gran parte dello spazio espositivo era occupato dagli stand delle aziende di prodotti venatori, ma ampia era comunque l’area destinata alla pesca dei predatori e al flyfishing.

As soon as I left the car in the park lot, the first thing that greeted my eyes was the number of policemen present at the entrance, quite obvious if you think about how many weapons were on display. But there was another reason to justify such a massive presence, a reason that I would discover later.

Lasciata l’auto in parcheggio, la prima cosa che saltava all’occhio era il numero di poliziotti presenti all’ingresso, cosa abbastanza ovvia se si pensa alla quantità di armi esposte. C’è però un altro motivo a giustificazione di quella presenza così massiccia, un motivo che avrei compreso più tardi.

I admit it bluntly: I do not appreciate the sport of hunting, and I assure you that living in the countryside I have every reason to despise it. Nevertheless, as you can see I have dedicated several clicks to this activity: the fact that I don’t appreciate it doesn’t mean I close my eyes and look the other way like fools do. In the two hours that caffeine kept me standing up I was able to photograph many interesting things.

Lo ammetto senza mezzi termini: non apprezzo la caccia e vi assicuro che vivendo in campagna ho ottimi motivi per disprezzarla. Nonostante ciò, come potete vedere ho dedicato parecchi scatti a tale attività: il fatto che non l’apprezzi non significa chiudere gli occhi e voltarsi dall’altra parte come farebbero gli sciocchi. Nelle due ore in cui la caffeina mi ha tenuto in piedi ho potuto fotografare parecchie cose interessanti.

Interesting things, but in some cases horrendous: the ones you see are real animals stuffed and mounted on a mechanism that make them move as if they were feeding on the ground… they looked like zombies! I prefer to see the animals moving when they are alive.

Cose interessanti, ma in qualche caso anche orrende: quelli che vedete sono animali veri imbalsamati e montati su un meccanismo che li fa muovere come se si stessero nutrendo al suolo… sembravano zombi! Gli animali preferisco vederli muovere quando sono vivi.

I felt a strange sense of unease throughout the period when I was in the hunt stands to get some pictures: there was always someone pointing a weapon against me. I can assure you it’s very unpleasant to find yourself at the business end of the gun barrel.

Ho provato una strana sensazione di disagio durante tutto il periodo in cui sono rimasto a fare qualche foto negli stands della caccia: in ogni momento c’era qualcuno che mi puntava un’arma contro. Vi posso assicurare che è molto sgradevole ritrovarsi dalla parte sbagliata della canna del fucile.

It seems that in the unconscious of Italian hunters behind every bush that moves there’s always a boar in hiding, and when they realize that there wasn’t the prey they expected, the Brenneke has already done irreparable damages. The fact is that in my neck of the wood hunters really shoot at everything that moves, which causes many accidents each hunting season, some even fatal. Living in the countryside I got to know the behavior of these gentlemen; many years ago a hunter shot a turkey that was grazing in the fields and when my grandfather asked him why he did it, the guy replied that he had mistaken it for a pheasant. Then he told my grandmother: “Dear, bring Elsa back into the stable before he mistook her for a hare.” (Elsa was his mare, white as snow).

Sembra che nell’inconscio dei cacciatori italiani si nasconda sempre un cinghiale dietro a un cespuglio che si muove, e quando si accorgono che non c’era la preda attesa la Brenneke ha ormai fatto danni irreparabili. Il fatto è che dalle mie parti sparano a tutto ciò che si muove, cosa che provoca molti incidenti a ogni stagione venatoria, alcuni anche mortali. Vivendo in campagna ho avuto modo di conoscere il comportamento di questi signori: molti anni fa un cacciatore aveva sparato a un tacchino che stava pascolando nei campi e quando mio nonno gli chiese perché lo avesse fatto, il tizio gli rispose che l’aveva scambiato per un fagiano. Allora rivolgendosi a mia nonna disse: “Cara, porta Elsa nella stalla prima che la scambi per una lepre” (Elsa era la sua cavalla, bianca come la neve).

This is the only good thing that I find in hunting: the dog, too bad that many hunters don’t think alike. I avoid to explain what, for example, the Spanish do at the end of their hunting season, but instead I’ll tell you what an Italian colleague who lives in the beautiful town of Desenzano del Garda, did a few months ago . That man had a dog which for 13 years had accompanied him in his hunting, but last fall he decided that he had grown too old and buried him alive under some debris in the countryside. The dog’s cries attracted the attention of some people who passed by and since the animal had the identification tattoo it was easy for the police to track down the owner. The thing is all over the national news programs and such was the embarrassment that the hunters’ federation has preferred not to comment. The police did not consider appropriate to disclose the name of that gentleman, after all in this sad Italy criminals enjoy many protections from the law, but surely you already know it.

Questo è l’unico aspetto positivo che trovo nella caccia: il cane, peccato che molti cacciatori non la pensino come me. Evito ora di spiegarvi cosa fanno ad esempio gli spagnoli al termine della loro stagione venatoria, ma vi dirò invece come si è comportato qualche mese fa un loro collega italiano che abita nel bel paese di Desenzano del Garda. Quel signore aveva un cane che per 13 anni lo aveva accompagnato nelle sue battute di caccia, ma lo scorso autunno ha deciso che era diventato troppo vecchio e lo ha seppellito vivo sotto dei detriti in campagna. I suoi lamenti hanno attirato l’attenzione di alcune persone che passavano lì vicino; essendo l’animale dotato di tatuaggio identificativo è stato facile per il poliziotti risalire al proprietario. La cosa è finita sui telegiornali nazionali e tale è stato l’imbarazzo che la loro federazione ha preferito non rilasciare dichiarazioni. La polizia non ha ritenuto opportuno divulgare il nome di quel signore, del resto nella triste Italia i criminali godono di molte tutele da parte della legge, ma sicuramente già lo sapete.

This is a feature I have seen on many guns, that is carvings made by hand with gold trim: something classy not noticeable on commercial fishing gear, with the exception of flyfishing.

Questo è una caratteristica che ho visto su molti fucili, ovvero incisioni realizzate a mano con tanto di finiture in oro: una classe non apprezzabile sugli attrezzi da pesca comunemente in commercio, ad eccezione del flyfishing.

This is one thing I don’t like in fishing fairs: aquarium stocked with fish caught a few days before and thrown unceremoniously to the audience. The water in this tank was opaque, indicating that lacked an effective filtering system. Fortunately I did not see scenes like the ones found in the squalid aquariums of FishingShow 2010, however I would only expose them granted the presence of competent aquarists. Animals with orange eyes are triotti, roach cousins that can only be found in the northern Italic peninsula and in Dalmatia.

Questa è invece una cosa che non apprezzo nelle fiere di pesca sportiva: acquari stipati di pesci presi qualche giorno prima e gettati in pasto al pubblico senza tanti complimenti. L’acqua in questa vasca era opaca, segno che mancava un sistema di filtraggio efficace. Fortunatamente non ho visto scene squallide come quelle presenti al FishingShow 2010, ad ogni modo farei esporre solo avendo la garanzia della presenza di acquariofili competenti.

Due superbi esemplari di salmone del Danubio (Hucho hucho), predatore delle acque dolci mitteleuropee. Purtroppo si tratta di un animale in rarefazione, vittima delle alterazioni ambientali legate dalle attività umane.

This gentleman is called Lino Galeotti and is an avid collector of antique fishing equipment, as well as associated with the ORCA. The jewel that he holds in his hands was found near the city of Cremona and is devoid of any identifying inscription: not a name, a trademark or serial number. This is probably a prototype built by a local craftsman; some details like the black Bakelite used in the finishing of the handle and the base of the spool would go back to the Fascist period (1922-1945). Anyway it looks like a worldwide unique piece.

Questo signore si chiama Lino Galeotti ed è un appassionato collezionista di antiche attrezzature da pesca, oltre che associato alla O.R.C.A. Il gioiello che tiene tra le mani è stato rinvenuto nei pressi della città di Cremona ed è privo di qualsiasi iscrizione identificativa: non un nome, un marchio o un numero di serie. Si tratta con ogni probabilità di un prototipo realizzato da un artigiano del posto; alcuni particolari come la bachelite nera impiegata nelle rifiniture dell’impugnatura e alla base della bobina lo farebbero risalire al periodo fascista (1923-1945). Ad ogni modo pare proprio che si tratti di un pezzo unico al mondo.

I photographed one of the inside pages of a book by John Stephenson, a famous guide on the first fixed spool reel (also called spinning reel) sets from manufacturers such as Illingworth, Chippindale, Farshure, Stanley, Hardy Bros and others.

Ho fotografato una delle pagine interne di un libro di John Stephenson; si tratta di una celebre guida sui primi mulinelli a bobina fissa di produttori come Illingworth, Chippindale, Farshure, Stanley, Hardy Bros e altri.

Here it is: this is an Illingworth n° 1 made out of a patent dating back to the early years of the last century and apparently represents the ancestor of all models of fixed spool, the most commonly used in sport fishing (although I found someone who thinks otherwise). Based on the conditions of the model, it can reach the value of several thousand euros.

Eccolo dunque: questo è un Illingworth n° 1 realizzato su un brevetto risalente ai primi anni del secolo scorso e a quanto pare rappresenta il progenitore di tutti i modelli a bobina fissa, i più usati nella pesca sportiva (anche se ho trovato qualcuno che la pensa diversamente). In base alle condizioni dell’esemplare, può raggiungere il valore di alcune migliaia di euro.

As I went out to get to the car of my friend Leo, a policeman stopped me and told me to change course: “Go that other way, you should take the longer route towards those buildings,” he said to me. That was to avoid an animal rights group camped at the main entrance, people heavily insulting everyone who came out of the fair. When they realized that I was taking pictures of them, they called me names and threated me, so I did not insist; this is the only picture I could take of those people. I anticipate right now that the next few articles published on my photoblog will be a bit special: formally falling into the category Bolognaise, the famous technique invented near the city of Bologna, but in fact they will be about my other great passion: the modern history. I’ll take advantage of a day on the banks of the River Mincio and of the photos taken on that occasion to speak of past events entered in history with the name “risorgimento italiano”. Writing this I mean the real historical facts, and not the nonsense that the Italics have learnt in school (including me) and that their politicians have proudly filled their mouths with during the entire 2011, when they began to celebrate something that deserved to go about in silence. If you have French, German or Austrian friends tell them not to miss the next few articles, because they contain a story that concern them very closely.

Nel momento in cui uscivo per raggiungere l’auto del mio amico Leo, sono stato fermato da un poliziotto che mi ha invitato a cambiare strada: “Vada da quell’altra parte, faccia il giro più lungo verso quei palazzi”, così mi disse. Il problema da evitare era un gruppo di animalisti posizionati difronte all’ingresso, gente che insultava pesantemente tutti coloro che uscivano dalla fiera. Quando si sono accorti che li stavo fotografando mi hanno rivolto ogni sorta di insulto e di minacce, sicché non ho insistito; quella che vedete è l’unica foto che ho potuto scattare a quelle persone. Vi anticipo sin d’ora che i prossimi articoli pubblicati sul mio photoblog saranno un po’ particolari: rientreranno formalmente nella categoria Bolognaise, relativa alla famosa tecnica inventata dalle parti di Bologna, ma nei fatti asseconderanno un’altra mia grande passione, quella per la storia moderna. Approfitterò di una giornata trascorsa sulle sponde del fiume Mincio e delle foto scattate in quella occasione per parlarvi degli eventi passati alla storia con il nome di “risorgimento italiano”. Nello scrivere questo intendo dire i veri fatti storici, non le fesserie che gli italici hanno studiato a scuola (compreso chi scrive) e di cui i loro politici si sono riempiti orgogliosamente la bocca durante tutto il 2011, quando si sono messi a festeggiare una cosa che meritava di passare sotto silenzio. Se avete amici francesi, tedeschi o austriaci dite loro di non perdersi i prossimi articoli, perché conterranno una storia che li riguarda molto da vicino.

Gonzaga, a small town near the city of Mantua, beetwen Venice and Milan: here the traditional fair market called Carpitaly takes place every year. This year’s edition was a bit special, primarily due to unfavorable weather conditions that hit the peninsula, and then for another trade fair dedicated to carp and predator fishing that took place a few days before.

Gonzaga, piccolo paese nei dintorni della città di Mantova, tra Venezia e Milano: qui si svolge ogni anno la tradizionale fiera mercato chiamata Carpitaly. Quella di quest’anno è stata un’edizione un po’ particolare, dovuta in primo luogo alle difficili condizioni climatiche che si sono abbattute sulla penisola, e poi per un’altra fiera specialistica dedicata al carp and predator fishing che si è svolta qualche giorno prima.

One of the first interesting things I saw just walking in the halls of the fair was the corner where they were exhibiting paintings; although they were as much beautiful as cheap, at the end of the day they were all still hanging in their place. Apparently the Italian fishermen aren’t interested in art, even when it costs a third of a Baitrunner reel.

Una delle prime cose interessanti che ho visto appena entrato nei padiglioni della fiera è stato l’angolino in cui erano esposti i quadri che vedete; benché fossero tanto meritevoli quanto a buon mercato, a fine giornata erano rimasti ancora tutti appesi al loro posto. A quanto pare i pescatori italiani non sono interessati all’arte, neanche quando costa un terzo di un Baitrunner.

In this type of fair also expose many retailers from which you can buy all sorts of products; don’t worry if walking along the corridors of Carpitaly you’ll encounter visitors loaded with fishing gear… that’s alright.

In questo tipo di fiere espongono anche molti negozianti dai quali è possibile acquistare ogni sorta di prodotto; se camminando lungo i corridoi del Carpitaly incontrerete visitatori carichi di attrezzature da pesca non preoccupatevi, è tutto ok.

A characteristic of the Italics is to divide themselves just about everything: if you ask 10 of them an opinion on something, you’ll end up with 20 different opinions. Why write this? Carp-fishing is a very specialized discipline and steadily growing as the number of practitioners, so much so that I find a dedicated trade show correct. It seems all right then, but it isn’t: the weekend before there was another fair dedicated to carp and predator fishing in the city of Ferrara (south of Venice). I don’t know the reasons for this absurd choice, and I don’t want to express myself about it (I wasn’t there because I was too tired after work and I didn’t feel like driving on snow).

Una caratteristica degli italici è quella di essere divisi su tutto: chiedete a 10 di loro un parere su una cosa e vi ritroverete con 20 opinioni diverse. Perché scrivo questo? Il carpfishing è una disciplina estremamente specialistica in forte ascesa come numero di praticanti, e personalmente trovo azzeccata una manifestazione fieristica dedicata. Sembrerebbe tutto ok allora, invece no: il weekend precedente a quello in cui si è svolto il Carpitaly c’è stata un’altra fiera dedicata al carp and predator fishing nella città di Ferrara (a sud di Venezia). Non conosco le motivazioni di questa scelta, e non mi voglio esprimere a riguardo (non me la sono sentita di guidare sulla neve).

Non solo carpe: nelle acque della penisola circolano anche molti grossi siluri e molti sono gli specialisti del catfishing.

During the show I didn’t see this gentleman, and probably he wasn’t even there. I anyhow decided to include this photo taken a few years ago because I liked it, after all a carpfishing fair wouldn’t be the same without the great Hoogendijk: so here he is, even if only virtually.

Durante la fiera non ho visto questo signore, ma probabilmente nemmeno c’era. Ho deciso comunque di inserire questa foto scattata qualche anno fa perché mi piaceva, del resto una fiera di carpfishing non sarebbe la stessa senza il grande Hoogendijk: eccolo dunque, anche se solo virtualmente.

That was another thing that got me thinking. On the table of a stand that exposed antique fishing equipment there was a piece of Italic fishing history: although it dates back to the beginning of the last century, it’s still a gem that deserves to be read over and over again. Since I already have two in excellent conditions, both belonging to the sixth edition, I decided not to buy it and continue the visit of the fair. When it was about time to leave, passing in front of the stand I saw that the book was still there despite its cost of just few euros: I finally decided to buy it along with some magazines of the 60s that you see in the picture. One thing I feel I can say with absolute certainty: Italic fishermen don’t understand a thing!

Un’altra cosa che mi ha dato da pensare. Sul tavolo dello stand che esponeva antiche attrezzature da pesca c’era un pezzo di storia italica: nonostante risalga ai primi anni del secolo passato, è ancora oggi un gioiellino che merita di essere letto e riletto. Poiché ne possedevo già due in ottime condizioni, entrambi appartenenti alla sesta edizione, avevo deciso di non comprarlo e di proseguire oltre nella visita della fiera. Giunto il momento di andarmene, passando davanti allo stand vidi che il libro era ancora lì e questo nonostante costasse pochissimi euro: alla fine mi sono deciso di comprarlo assieme alle riviste degli anni ’60 che vedete nella foto. Una cosa sento di poter affermare con certezza assoluta: i pescatori italici non capiscono un piffero!

“F” as February, “F” as fairs: who doesn’t know the world of Italic sport fishing might be led to thinking this month is the best one for trade shows, instead this time of year is a bone of contention that has divided the companies for many years; I’ll explain this thing in a future article. What you’re about to see is a slideshow on the 2011 edition of FishingShow, the largest trade fair in Italy (at least until last year). A little trick: I put 3 images taken during the previous edition, the 2010, and that are clearly out of place; try to identify which are which.

“F” come febbraio, “F” come fiere: chi non conosce il mondo della pesca sportiva italica potrebbe essere indotto a pensare che questo mese sia il preferito per le manifestazioni fieristiche, e invece proprio questo periodo dell’anno rappresenta il pomo della discordia che da molti anni divide le aziende del settore, un aspetto che spiegherò in un prossimo articolo. Quella che state per vedere è una presentazione dedicata all’edizione 2011 del FishingShow, la più grande fiera espositiva sul territorio italico (almeno fino allo scorso anno). Un piccolo scherzo: ho inserito 3 immagini scattate durante l’edizione precedente, quella del 2010, e che palesemente sono fuori posto; provate a individuare quali sono.

How much can the world change from a year to the next? Much, very much, or nothing at all: all depends on the subject. And if that’s the FishingShow? As for this exhibition fair a lot has changed over 12 months: let’s take a quick look at what was interesting in 2010.

Quanto può cambiare il mondo da un anno a quello successivo? Tanto, tantissimo, oppure nulla: ovviamente dipende dal soggetto. E se questo è il FishingShow? Per quanto riguarda questa fiera espositiva molto è cambiato nel corso di 12 mesi: diamo una rapida occhiata a cosa c’era di interessante nel 2010.

Bought the ticket, this is the corridor that you must travel to get to the turnstiles and then access the exhibition halls; now look at the advertisement places above the crowd, they are all occupied. In 2010 the effects of the great crisis were already evident but the companies had gritted their teeth and showed up in Bologna.

Una volta acquistato il biglietto, questo è il corridoio che si deve percorrere per arrivare ai tornelli e quindi accedere ai padiglioni espositivi; guardate gli spazi pubblicitari posti sopra la gente, sono tutti occupati. Nel 2010 gli effetti della crisi già erano evidenti ma le aziende avevano stretto i denti e a Bologna c’erano quasi tutte.

Look up, the last magazine on the left: it was founded in 1962 and among all those beckoning at the newsstands it was the oldest and there’s not one Italic angler who doesn’t know its name. On one day of June some 26 years ago my mother bought me a copy… my first fishing magazine. On the cover there was a picture of a swordfish just caught, and was framed in blue, something like National Geographic. All the best Italic fishing writers published on its pages, and for some time in the past it had also hosted my modest articles. Today the magazine that you see in the upper left corner exists no longer, nor any other, and also the publishing house closed down, Editoriale Olimpia. The web has nothing to do with that, nor even the great depression that has begun in late 2008: it was a family run company that made seppuku in the most banal way, something that should make us think about how bad its management board was working . I’m not someone who likes to kick a man when he’s down, as I know the dramas of several families in Tuscany about this failure, but the endless lies that I had to cash in while I wasn’t getting paid still burn me. Do you want to know my feelings when I heard about the collapse of this publisher? Well, I’d better keep it for me.

Guardate in alto, l’ultima rivista a sinistra: venne fondata nel 1962 e tra tutte quelle presenti nelle edicole era la più longeva; non c’è un solo pescatore italico che non la conosca. Un giorno di giugno di 26 anni fa mia madre me ne comprò una copia… la mia prima rivista di pesca sportiva; in copertina c’era la foto di un pesce spada appena catturato, ed era circoscritta da una cornice azzurra che faceva tanto National Geographic. Tutti i migliori scrittori di pesca italici hanno pubblicato sulle sue pagine, che per qualche tempo hanno accolto anche i miei modesti lavori. Oggi quella rivista che vedete in alto a sinistra non esiste più, e nemmeno tutte le altre, così come non esiste più l’editore che le pubblicava, l’Editoriale Olimpia. Il web non centra e tanto meno la grande crisi iniziata nel tardo 2008: si trattava di un’azienda a gestione famigliare che ha fatto seppuku nel modo più banale che si possa immaginare, cosa che deve far riflettere sulle capacità manageriali del suo direttivo. Non sono uno che spara ad alzo zero sulle ambulanze della Croce Rossa: conosco il dramma vissuto da molte famiglie toscane, ma le infinite bugie che ho dovuto incassare per non essere pagato ancora mi scottano. Volete sapere il mio stato d’animo nel momento in cui ho saputo della chiusura di questo editore? Beh, meglio che me lo tenga per me.

This picture was taken during last year’s contest (note the new Daiwa’s logo used for the first time): can you see the difference with the previous ones? The edition in next February will be even more shabbier, but not just because of the crisis; I’ll explain the reason in a following article.

Questa foto è stata scatta durante l’edizione dello scorso anno (notate il nuovo logo Daiwa usato per la prima volta): riuscite a cogliere la differenza con le precedenti? L’edizione che si svolgerà il prossimo mese di febbraio sarà ancora più povera, ma non solo a causa della crisi; ve ne spiegherò le ragioni in un altro articolo.

FishingShow 2010, the last time for the historic red and blue Daiwa logo containing the motto that should be the diktat for any company. Well, when I saw the new one I thought exacly the same as all the other anglers of this world did: HORRIBLE!

FishingShow 2010, l’ultima volta per lo storico logo rosso e blu di Daiwa contenente quel celebre motto che dovrebbe essere un diktat per ogni azienda. Beh, quando ho visto quello nuovo ho pensato esattamente la stessa cosa di tutti gli altri pescatori di questo mondo: ORRIBILE!

I haven’t yet figured out if the beautiful Team Daiwa logo in vogue since the early nineties has followed the fate of the main brand, I hope not. But what crossed the minds of the management in Tokyo?

Non ho ancora capito se anche il bellissimo logo Team Daiwa in auge dai primi anni novanta abbia seguito il destino del brand principale; mi auguro proprio di no. Ma cosa gli è passato per la testa ai capoccioni di Tokio?

The 2010 edition took place on two floors of the building and there was indeed much to see, also aquariums with goldfish: I find this image relaxing and often use it as a desktop screen.

L’edizione del 2010 si svolse su due piani dello stabile espositivo e c’era effettivamente molto da vedere. Vi erano anche acquari con pesci rossi: trovo rilassante questa foto e la imposto spesso come desktop.

This picture is nice too, too bad only for the little silver carp’s back that emerges from the bottom.

Anche questa immagine è gradevole, peccato solo per il dorso dell’amur che emerge dal lato inferiore.

A clandestine out of place, but unfortunately it wasn’t the only one…

Please, try to explain to me the meaning of this thing, because I haven’t managed to get it during the last two years. I’ll not write about the usual Italian job, I’ll just report that the 2011 FishingShow edition took place on only one floor, and above all that there weren’t lager-aquariums with mistreated animals. If that’s due to the crisis, then I say that even stormy clouds have a silver lining.

Provate voi a spiegarmi il senso di questa cosa, perché io a due anni di distanza non sono ancora riuscito a coglierlo. Non starò ora a scrivere della solita fesseria all’italiana, riporto solo che l’edizione del 2011 si è svolta su un solo piano, e che sopratutto non c’erano acquari-lager con pesci maltrattati. Se ciò è da addebitare alla crisi, allora è il caso di dire che non tutto il male viene per nuocere.
